Amburgey President Dr. Amburgey became President of Hiwassee on Ju 1980, after having previously served as the Acade Dean of the college for many years. He holds degr from Hiwasee College, Emory Henry College, University of Virginia, and the Doctor’s Degree fi the University of Tennessee. President Amburgey has been highly active in civic educational affairs. He has held numerous offices in health planning field and has been appointed on th different occasions to serve on state boards. In a tion to the many organizations of which he is a m ber, he has been recently inducted into the Sons Of Revolution and recognized as a Phi Theta Kappa Fel by the Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Society. Dr. Amburgey has been active in many educatic organizations. Recently he was elected to serve on Commission of Colleges of the Southern Associatior Colleges and Schools. This Commission, which is c posed of sixty-six members, has the primary respoi bility for the accreditation of member colleges i universities throughout the Southeastern United Stal Even though Dr. Amburgey is involved in many on c« pus and off campus activities, he and his family i occasionally find time to pursue some of their outd interests. They particularly enjoy such activities camping and fishing. 36 Dr. William Knight Academic Dean In the two years since Bill Knight became the Academic Dean of Hiwassee College, he has done an outstanding job. His willingness to assist in solving academic problems and other difficulties has made him a favorite with students. Many sophomore students have also appreciated the at¬ tentive scrutiny provided by him and his staff in seeing that graduation requirements are being ful¬ filled. (Better to find out at the beginning of Spring quarter than the day before graduation.) Dr. Knight came to the college well educated for his role as Academic Dean. He has a B.S. in English from East Tennessee State, a M.A. in English from Western Carolina University, and recently com¬ pleted doctorial work to receive his Ph. D. from Virginia Polytechnical Institute and State Univer¬ sity (VPI). His doctorate is in College Administra¬ tion. His dissertation on Non-Punitive Grading Practices in the Two-year College has been widely acclaimed as an excellent and thorough work. Along with his many responsibilities as Academic Dean, Dr. Knight ' s schedule also includes teaching Public Speaking and sponsoring the Phi Theta Kappa Honorary Fraternity. In all of these settings, students find Dr. Knight’s thoughtful insight and concern for their well-being to be a beneficial part of their Hiwassee experience. Dr. Knight and his wife, Judy, have two children, Myra and Lara, and have made their home in the Creekwood Subdivision of Madisonville. 3; BILL DAUGHERTY DEAN OF STUDENTS As Dean of Students, Bill W. Daugherty continues to do a tremendous job. His responsibilities range from coordinating the schedule of extracurricular activities to counseling students who may seek his advice concerning any one of a myriad of problems facing college students of the 80 ' s. In spite of the pressures of his position. Dean Daugherty continues to show sincere concern for the students of Hiwassee and their well-being as individuals. Dean Daugherty is one of several faculty and staff persons who once attended Hiwassee themselves as students. After receiving his A.A. degree from Hiwassee, Dean Daugherty attended E.T.S.U. to receive his B.A. in P.E. and Masters in Health. He has also done additional graduate work at U.T.K. in Education Administration. Along with his many responsibilities as Dean of Students. Dean Daugherty also finds time to coach the Lady Tigers Softball Team, and to sponsor the Fellowship of Christian Athletes, and the Student Government Association. The vigor and spirit with which he approaches his work is contagious to the students he is around and is a real plus for these organizations. One of the things which students appreciate most about Dean Daugherty is his uncanny ability to learn, and remember their names. In a world where students are increasingly identified by a number, a Dean of Students who knows them by name is refreshing. Dean Daugherty, his wife, Carolyn, and his three sons. Bill Jr., Robbie, and Tony reside in the old president’s mansion on the hill across the road from the college. 38 PEOPLE WHO MAKE THINGS CLICK 3 BUSINESS OFFICE Eugene Kiger Business Manager Bobbie Pennington Secretary William Coffelt Assistant Business Manager 40 ADMISSIONS AND FINANCIAL AID _ • Ron Hemphill Dir. of Admissions and Financial Aid Mike Charles Admissions Counselor Bill Marrs Admissions Counselor 4 OFFICE OF DEVELOPMENT Paul Barker, Jr. Title 3 Director of Planning and Research t Judy Patterson Vice-President ' s Secretary Secretary of Development Alumni Janice Blair Secretary B.D. It is where you look back on all you have done with your friends. It is a time to share laughter and joy. But the class night of 1982 was not like it should have been because of a certain group of people. Instead of joy and laughter, many experienced tears and sorrow. The night was ruined and the memories tainted.
