A Spirit Of Aca4emic Since Hiwassee is a junior college, it is the basis for further education. It prepares stu¬ dents for further study in senior institutions and provides vocational and academic training in a two-year terminal curricula. Upon gradua¬ tion from Hiwassee, a student may choose between advancing to a higher academic level or embarking upon a career. Hiwassee encourages academic achieve¬ ment through its organizations, student- faculty relationship, awards, and financial aid. Each of these emphasize the value of scholastic achievement. Membership in Hiwassee ' s organizations require a certain grade point average. Such clubs as the Civitans, Civinettes, and APO require a 2.00 average. Phi Theta Kappa, a national honor fraternity especially empha¬ sizes scholarly achievement. Even the athle¬ tic department requires that a student main¬ tains a certain average for participation in sports. With the availability of so many advantages Hiwassee has evolved, through experience, into one of the highest ranked junior colleges in the south. With this in mind students at Hiwassee naturally take pride in all they attempt. Achievement

A Spirit Accomplishment, a big word which ex¬ presses how one feels about success in ones college life here at Hiwassee. Accomplish¬ ments are the little things that one attempts and completes; it is seeing new buildings being completed on Hiwassee campus. At Hiwassee, a student has many opportuni¬ ties for accomplishment. This is seen in the classroom or outside of class. For example, a term paper or a difficult experiment in one of the major fields of science. Also, the ability to live in a dorm, to make new friends, and to achieve a 2.00 average. The feeling of accomplishment justifies all the work, and perhaps the failure that precedes eventual perfection. 10
