PRESENTING HIWASSEE ’55 . . . PUBLISHED BY THE SOPHOMORE CLASS OF HIWASSEE COLLEGE MADISONVILLE, TENNESSEE EDITOR DAVID LEWIS BUSINESS MANAGER HENRY LENOIR FOREWORD Bald River Falls Photo by G. R. Cash This is the story of Hiwassee 5?, a year ™ which we have lived and loved. This was the year we left dear old Hiwassee and as we go we leave this record of our events. This has been a year of growth for us, mentally, spiritually, and physically. New buildings arose during our stay a.nd we heard of more to come. This has been a year of gaining many new friends, both among the faculty and the student body. We remember them with great admiration. This has been a year of studies. Many times we burned the midnight oil, only to go to class the next morning sleepy-eyed. This has been our year-HIWASSEE 55- and we are happy to present it to you. 2 DEDICATION For the way he has so tireless- ly and successfully devoted his energetic nature. For the way he has inspired us to greater intellectual achievements. For his kind expression of friend- liness to every student and faculty member at Hiwassee. We, the Sophomore Class of Hiwas- see College, with a keen sense of gratitude and deep appreciation, dedicate HIWASSEE 55 to Mr. James S. Farmer. MR. JAMES S. The Tigers started with only seven veterans returning. Kenneth Chambers, a triple threat tailback from Rockford, Tenn., was elected captain of the team; Gene Shambaugh and Andrew Spur- ling were alternate co-captains. The team, under the leadership of head-coach Howard Davis and backfield coach C. N. McDowell, was impressive as they showed high spirit and de- termination throughout the year. On Sept. Maryville College defeated Hi- wassee by the score of 26-6. Sixteen lettermen proved too much for the Tigers as the Mary ville Scotties rolled along, scoring in every quarter. O. L. Davis scored Hiwassee ' s only touchdown. The Hiwassee eleven got their first taste of victory as they romped the Mars Hill Lions 13-6 on Sept. 25. Kenneth Chambers and Em erson Poe scored Hiwassee ' s touchdowns. 42 FIRST ROW: Charles, Duncan, Boyd, Holcomb, Payne, Moses, Hunt, Pike, Wisecarver. SECOND ROW: P. The tables were turned when Mars Hill up- it the Tigers 34-7 in a return visit. On Oct. the Hiwassee team traveled to the South to eet Georgia Military College. The Tigers ere defeated 20- 13. On October 23, the Tigers an their third game by defeating West Geor- a 21-7. Hiwassee ' s return visit to Tennessee Wes- yan was almost a reverse of the Homecom- g game. The Bulldogs rolled over the Tigers - 7 .
