WILMER ROBBINS President Phi Rho Pi ELIZABETH SMITH MRS. J. M. COLSTON Sponsor, Both Fraternities President Delta Psi Omega THE HIWASSEE CHAPTER OF THE PHI RHO PI Forensic Fraternity has enjoyed a fruitful year. After starting with five tenative members at the beginning of the school year, its membership has increased to twenty-three with thirteen joining the National Fraternity. This is the largest membership the local chapter has ever had, and is also the largest chapter in the Southeastern Division, consisting of twelve Junior Col- leges. Each member won his or her membership by representing the college in some forensic contest. Elizabeth Smith. Christine Scott. Sarah Taylor, William Davis. Wilmer Robbins, and Mrs. J. M. Colston, sponsor, won the degree of highest achievement in the organization. The debaters participated in twenty-two decision debates, winning eleven, and nine non- decision debates. The senior colleges that they debated were Maryville College. Maryville. Ten- nessee : Piedmont College. Demorest. Ga. ; and Concord College, Athens. W. Va. The junior college debates were with Tennessee Wesleyan, Wingate, Rio Grande, South Carolina Tex- tile. and Virginia Interment. In the Southeastern Division tournament, Elizabeth Smith won first place in Dramatic read- ings. The boys’ debating team, William Davis and Wilmer Robbins, tied for second place, and the girls’ team, Sarah Taylor and Christine Scott, tied for third place. The graduating members of the organization look back with pride on the work they have done, and regret very much that they can not be in the work longer. However, they are happy to leave such an active group of students to carry on the work next year. Officers: President. Wilmer Robbins: vice president, Anna Leake ; secretary. Edith Bledsoe; reporter. Christine Scott. Although it is the youngest organization on the campus, it is by no means the least active. This organization has taken over as its added enjoyment to college life the sponsoring of the May Day festivities. Under the skillful leadership and cooperation of the following officers the fraternity has taken its place in the campus life: cast director, Mrs. J. M. Colston; president, Elizabeth Smith, vice president, Grace Boring; secretary. Henry Bryson; reporter. Kitten Bonardi. May Day was celebrated on May 14. The morning was devoted to field day under the competent supervision of Mr. D. R. Youell. The afternoon’s program featured the open- ing of the college swimming pool. In the moonlight tne purchasing, settling, and the growth of Hiwassee College was portrayed. The May Queen was crowned as Queen of Education. The most delightful outing for the year was the fraternity’s week-end trip in the fall to Mt. LeConte. Climbing the autumnal decked mountains was the climax of the excursion.
