COMMANDING OFFICER Lieutenant I • Gary S. NELSON Lieutenant Gary S. NELSON attended the University of Minnesota graduating in 1969 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Administration. Upon graduation he was commissioned from the NROTC Unit, University of Minnesota. Lieutenant NELSON ' s initial lour of duty was in USS CHEVALIER (DD-805) where he served as Navigator and CIC Officer. He attended the Naval Destroyer Department Head Course from May through November 1971. Lieutenant NELSON reported to USS MCKEAN iDD-784) in January 1972 as Weapons Officer and relieved as Operations Officer one year later. In August 1973, he reported to USS TUSCALOOSA 1 I.ST 1 187) as Engineer Officer where he assumed additional duties as overhaul coordinator from .July through December 1974. In March 1975 Lieutenanl NELSON reported to the Naval Postgraduate School. Monterey, California, as a student in the Anti-Submarine Warfare curriculum. He n-icived his Maslcr of Science degree in Systems Technology in March 1977. Lieutenanl NELSON reported aboard USS HITCHIT1 (ATF-103) and assumed command on Augusl 26, 1977. He was the last active Commandng Officer of USS Hll( Hill (A IF 103) when she was decommissioned September 30, 1978. Lieutenanl NELSON is married to the former Mary Wilberg of Anoka, Minnesota. They have three children: Christine, Steven, and Brian.
