' 1 NAIIONAL I ' ARK PHOTO SERVICE CANDQ OP Tf UE FOREWORD Like the vibrant sands of the desert, ever moving, some- times slowly, sometimes swiftly, the days of this year at Hirschi High School draw too quickly to the close of another year. For two hundred twelve seniors this year is a fitting climax to four unparalleled years at Hirschi High. Time will not soon erase the emotions experienced by every student at Hirschi: the joy of victory, the sorrow of defeat, the thrill of accomplishment, the pride of participation in all phases of life at Hirschi. With Shakespeare we can say, Now our sands are almost run. But first, the Staff of the 1966 HUSKY bids you view through these pages the moments of this year which will soon be mingled forever with the eternal SANDS OF TIME. Throughout the years Mrs. Myrtle Hirschi Ledford has ever remained a gracious and generous friend to Hirschi High School. She can best be described by Richard Branfield ' s familiar verse: Words are easy, like the wind; Faithful friends are hard to find. E J 1 J r. 1 ' 1 r il4 1 h UBG. Throughout the year, seniors have been kept busy with bake sales, sponsoring a dance, caroling, and other fund-raising projects. Gone now are the moments of excitement of trimming the senior Christmas tree, the confusion of cap and gown measurements, and the toil of senior term themes, to be relived only in memory and through the pages of the ' 66 HUSKY. These moments are now golden grains amid the ever-changing Sands of Time. SHRT SPIRIT is a word undefined at Hirschi. It could be described as the tradition of Western Day, the bustle of a band trip, or the excitement of a pep rally and a game. But, most of all, it is a thing one feels from the moment he enters Hirschi. Of all the great accomplishments attributed to the school, as timeless as the very Sands of Time, is the proud spirit of Hirschi High. iJEKIfS |]fl ! i[ • ' nm ' 13 Almost as numerous as the grains of sand in the desert are the honors gained by stu- dents of Hirschi. Whether performing before the school and community in the annual talent show, representing their classes on student councils, or vying for individual hon- ors, students exhibited the best of Hirschi High. Countless as the proverbial Sands of Time are these golden memories of accomplishment. •TA ONDERI IND ' 7 i ' -1-4 r ' li 18 9f %. I ' MiK V c II Christmas lingered past December at Hirschi as snows mantled the campus transform- ing the grounds to a true Winter Wonderland. Not soon will be forgotten the gaily decorated doors, the snowmen and snowballs, the many hours spent within the warm halls of Hirschi while outside fell the quietly drifting flakes like the silent fleeting of the Sands of Time. iU i , 17 ICNCMSDG Taking advantage of each fleeting hour, students studied and worked toward their separate goals. For all, each six weeks saw the end of one goal and the beginning of another; for Seniors, the ultimate goal — graduation! Adding new knowledge to their store of memories, students of Hirschi High saw the days pass one by one like grains of sand through Time ' s own hourglass. ADMfNfSlRAnON 20 Lives of i reat men all remind us We can make our lives sublime, And, departing, leave behind us Footprints on the sands of time. — Henry Wadsworth Longfellow SCHOOL AD UfMfSTRArORe Through the fine leadership provided by Dr. Joe B. McNiel, superintendent of Wichita Falls public schools, great progress has been made. Hirschi High School proudly reflects the efforts of his devotion to planning that m.ide the school possible. In addition to his sers ' ices to local schools, Superin- tendent McNiel has fo und time to make unique con- tributions to the welfare of students and teachers through- out Texas. As the students rushed about in a state of complete con- fusion, a very distinguished looking gentleman was there to greet each newcomer with a friendly smile. Always busy, always interested, Mr. Neal con- tinues to keep Hirschi High School operating smoothly and efficiently, yet he always has time to extend a friendly hand to students, faculty and visitors alike. 25 CUFPORDJ. MUGRES Assuming greater responsibilities at Hirschi this year is Mr. Clifford J. Hughes, vice-principal. AGR cards, student banking, co-ordination of audio- visual materials, and student records keep Mr. Hughes busy early and late. Under the direction of the Language Department of Hirschi, students be- come familiar with the customs and speech of people of various other coun- tries. 40 Avmrww-- SPEECH Under the direction of Mrs. P.itsy Horn, students in the Speech Department of Hir- schi gain practical experience in public speaking, debate, and drama. Using skills de- veloped in these classes, students perform in numerous school and civic activities, in tournaments, and in Interscholastic League Competition throughout the state, bringing honor to themselves and to Hirschi. JCURNAUqU Under the supervision of Mrs. Patricia Lauck, the journal- ism staff learns the basic fundamentals of journalistic writ- ing. Using techniques developed in this course, the staff sub- mits news stories, feature articles, and sports columns for publication in the school newspaper and in the Tuesday eve- ning Teen Times in the Wichita Fall Times. Meeting deadlines is good preparation for facing responsibilities that may come up later, and development of an objective view- point can become another asset, the sponsor pointed out. f ._f 9 f v SOCIAL STUDfK Through Social Studies the students of Hirschi explore the world today in relation to the world of the past. They discuss current problems and events, as well as the struc- ture and function of government in preparation for the demand of the future. 42 Il J SOENCE TTirough use of its modern facilities students enrolled in science courses are learning much about biology, physics, and chemistry. 43 MATH Through the school ' s first four years, the Mathematics Department of Hirschi has grown and now includes almost every field of mathematical interest. Besides the basic courses of algebra, plane geometry, and related math, more advanced studies of trigo- nometry and solid geometry challenge all who want additional training for advanced work in college. 44 BUSINESS Many Hirschi students gain practical training in fields of business through the Com- mercial Department. Shorthand, typing, and bookkeeping are available to ail wishing to prepare for careers in business. 45 WOME ECONCVWfCe Girls enjoy preparing for a brighter fu- ture as housewives or career girls through Hirshi ' s Home Economics Department. flRT Ceramics, oil and water painting, poster design, and papier-mache constructions are included in the courses to help students gain a better perspective of the beaut)- around them as basis for their own designs. fJXJQlC The Music Department is an integral part of the school. It seeks to instill musical appreciation in all students of Hirschi. At pep rallies, football games, concerts and special assemblies, the band, choir, and orchestra represent the best that is Hirschi. Members of the Music Department travel over the State to represent Hirschi in com- petitions and also appear frequently before local audiences. i • : 47 PWVefCAL EDUCATfON Mental and physical alertness go hand in hand, and at Hirschi hours of study are off-set by vigorous exercise. Hirschi ' s complete physical education program includes body development, muscle coordination, and .sportsmanship, thus providing an outlet for energy through such activities as baseball, basketball, volleyball, tennis, football, track, tumbling, and exercises. 4S CADH CORPS Through the National Defense Cadet Corps students receive training in leadership, reliability, and self-discipline. The cadets study military science under the guidance of their instructor. Col. Leo E. Harmon. The N.D.C.C. unit of Hirschi has been an honor corps for the past two years. David Nipp was named the outstanding cadet of the city in 1965. icr The instruction provided by Mr. Joe T. Facing the difficult task of rebuilding a championship team, the Huskies entered District 4-AAA play with but one win. XTien it was all over, the Huskies had added only three more victories to that record, but they had nothing to be ashamed of, having given their all in every encounter. At ever)- game, win .or lose, louder than the cheering in the stands could be heard the triumphant whisper from every heart, We are the Huskies, couldn ' t be prouder.
