As Hirsch responds to the nation's call for service, our activities carry G- on with fervor, our patriotic drives yield forth, and our honor jj roll mounts high. The line for waste paper grows longer: Z f W Z Z our scrap collection, now well over 100,000 pounds, grows larger: and our Red Cross contribution f . ' swells as we realize the vital part we play J N l X i on the home front. May we unite A .X V!! , P K our services to our country to g A obtain the key to the door- gr! Urged by inter class competition, we have surpassed our 9070 goal, and our minute man flag flies. We have purchased jeeps, planes, a tank and ducks, and have received in return, our security for the future in war bonds and stamps. These vital implements of war on our service roll are offered to our country as our financial contribution to the war effort. 142 ww if Lt 'S in .sf NL ik' XX! o Which is your service? At Hirsch you find every type of service ranging from required classes to voluntary drives. In the wood shop boys are making wooden boxes useful to the USO, while the girls take primary courses in first aid and home nursing. Patriotic drives are constant at Hirsch. These drives involve the participation of every person at Hirsch, whether it be donating a cake for the USO or canvasing the neighborhood for waste paper. cf f rs- A ',. -Q A N ,. Hirsch's students are its citizens now-attending to their services with willing enthusiasm which they will carry with them into the future. ff? 1 ,a ,M .M ,f M , ,ws .4- .. 1 . . This edition of the MAROON goes to press close to the eve of V-E Day. Peace we have worked for: and for peace we have longed. It is most fitting therefore that I dedicate this book to all the students of Hirsch, that it may stand as testi- monial to their love of country and to their determination to preserve the American way of life. HURNEY, Jdmfanf Pffnffpa! o In her gentle but effective manner, our Assistant Principal, Miss Margaret M. Hurney, performs the tedious tasks her position demands. She has well earned the awe of the Freshie, the admiration of the sophomore, the co-operation of the Junior and the respect of the Senior. Though quiet she may be, Miss Hurney has made a friend of all who seek her guidance, and has become a part of Hirsch long to be re- membered. 414: FRIENDS CF if-ACL wHo SERVE Q.-What growing organization helps to make our financial drives a success, to make the under-privileged of our city feel secure, and in general serves the students of Hirsch? A.-The Hirsch chapter of the P.T.A. Q.--Is the Hirsch P.T.A. a growing organization? A.-Decidedly, yes! Q.-How have they helped to make the underprivileged of our city feel secure? A.-By collecting and distributing clothing, by giving financial aid to the Y.M.C.A. and the Montifiore school. Q.-In what other ways have they served the students of Hirsch? A.-They have contributed to the High School Council, the Student Aid, and to the ad department of the Maroon. These are just a few of the accomplishments of the Friends of Hirsch who Serve -our Parent-Teacher Association. P.T.A. Row 1: Miss McCahey. A shining example of this class's participation in school events is their active and well-liked Vice President, Florence Greenleaf lupper rightl. The congenial class treasurer, Ierry Humble, Ccenterl says, It takes a good Swede to balance the books , and from his example we are in- clined to believe him. The well kept records of this class are accredited to the efficiency of our able Secretary, Doris Tingey Clower leftl. The good looking Social Chairman, lack Krone Clower rightl sees to it that all the social deals are a success. These class officers are truly representative of the fine spirit and loyal service of these graduates of 45 . add O icem 131: SHIRLEY ALVINE Shir1 Latin Club, Clean-up League., G.A.A., Band, Glee Club, Gold Sr. Girls Club, Bond Office Asst., Honor Roll. So that the minute man flag may continue to fly monthly, 90125 of each division must purchase stamps and bonds. This semester their aim has been the purchase of a hospital plane with goal of 52,500 for each division. BOOKOLOGY O So you want to read a good book? These eager students are always ready to help. Under the direction of Mrs. Kane, their true friend and charming leader, they aspire to the heights of perfection. I Since the war, Hirsch has given unlimited service in the enthusiastic purchasing and selling of bonds and stamps. During the past three years, over half a million dollars in bonds and stamps were sold. Bond sales on various projects were stimulated through competition be- tween divisions and semester classes, and the poster club made clever and appealing charts for Welcome Hall which showed the progress of each group. Stamp purchases were also included in the charts. Stamps are collected every Wednesday during division, and then turned in to Miss L. Ross, Hirsch's War co- ordinator. The Minute-Man flag, signifying at least 9011 student monthly purchases, has flown monthly over our school. 3553455333 'F in DVWFQSDN COAL. '25OC' Slfvfom EQUALED f f ff if f if 0 The R. O. T. C. had its beginning in the law of Congress. known as the Morrill Act of 1862. It authorized grants of public land for state educational institutions, and required such institutions to maintain courses of military training. The students were not then known as the R. O. T. C., but the land-grant colleges furnished many able cfficers to the army. The purpose of the R. O. T. C. is to qualify selected students for position of military leadership and appointment as re- serve officers of the military forces. The R. O. T. C. as a school for citizenship, lays a founda- tion by stressing habits of precision and orderliness, discipline and self-control and by promoting good physical department and patriotism. Hirsch's R. O. T. C. has held honor ratings since its origin in 1937 and has been a third place school for the last three years. Under the command of Cadets, Lt. Colonel Robert Crist and Major Richard Wadoz, we hope to obtain first place in our Federal Inspection on May the fourteenth. Besides their regular activities the R. O. T. C. acts as ushers at school programs, as hall guards and as fire guards. The presenting of the Color is done by the Color Guards, which in our opinion is one of the snappiest in the city. lt 109 i Cmletf, CF TODAY - L 4 1 R. O. T. C. COMPANY A How I: I-l. I The football team, under the capable super- vision of Coach Bernard O'Brien, didn't win the South Section Championship, but to quote the words of Coach O'Brien: The season was far from being a failure. The Huskies' initial test came when they met South Shore. They fought hard but the breaks were against them with the final score of 6-0. With the typical Hirsch spirit, the Huskies profited by their errors and the ensuing week saw a greatly improved team take the field against Kelvyn Park, trouncing them, 15-O. The opening league contest against Bowen was truly a heartbreaker. Bowen cashed in on a Huskie fumble late in the last quarter for the lone tally of the game. The peak performance of the season came when a smart, fast Chicago Vocational eleven bowed in humble defeat to a hard hitting Hirsch team to the tune of 19-S! ll4v FOOTBALL-1945 0 Special recognition should be given to: Coach O'Brien, who has, in the short period of time he has been here, accomplished much and brought about a feeling of unityand cooperation among the football team: Assistant Coach Ted Zayner for his able assistance in coaching the team: the managers who handled the equipment and all the odd jobs that make up the unglamorous side of football: and, last but not least, the reserves who played well and were only a few quarters shy of receiving that maroon the coveted symbol that marks a Hirsch gridster. The advantages of football, both mental and physical, remain with the participant longer than Will the memory of the last game. In time of peace they sustain him, and in time of a national emergency, they fit him for a place in the scheme of defense of those cherished freedoms e-life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. At moments it looked as if they just didn't have it: yet, when they began to hit the hoops tor tallies, it was hard to slow them down. Coached by Ted Zayner, who turned in his first full season with the Huskies , and cap- tained by Bill Benson, the squad fared much better than could be ex- pected because of a height disadvantage. The encouraging news of this season is that the Huskies are pro- ducing better teams each succeeding year. Under Coach Zayner, the second-string has been developed to such an extent that it seems almost as good as the first string.
