A HIRSCH HIGH SCHOOL IN CHICAGO Qur dcldwvements are recorded m H115 the 1943 Maroon Wrthrn these Pages are Presented the thoughts and actrons o 4 . . f the student body Preparing for war and Preparing for peace, I 13: v MISS MARIE A. McCAHEY, CUR NEW PRINCIPAL e come fo you, MISS MCCAHEY Today, throughout the nation, the responsibilities of the high school prin- cipals are greater than ever before. The huge tasks of preparing their students to take their places in this war torn world, and of training them to aid in the Post War reconstruction, are but a few of their many responsibilities. To be equal to such a trust requires a person of exceptional ability to lead and to lend sound advice. We at HIRSCH are extremely proud to have just such a person in our principal, Miss Marie A. McCahey: and it is to her that we, the students of the Senior Classes of Iune 1943, and February l944, dedicate this issue of the MAROON. TO OUR HIRSCH STUDENTS: We are living in a tumultuous era which calls for inspiration and fore- sight in the daily conduct of our lives. Nationally and individually, we are constantly made aware of the importance of one great asset . . . time! Our young men and women of high school age have a new consciousness and apprecia- tion of the relationship of time ex- penditures to their future, and they are meeting the national emer- gency with calm deliberation and a thoughtful planning of their time and action. Theirs is a simple but great cour- age. May they guard it well . . . -sf as the flame which will light the f' way and carry them through! Marie A. McCahey, Principal . 'I . To each and everyone, the students of Hirsch Say, Thank You. ' 3 PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION 0 In addition to calling Iunior to breakfast, laying out his sweaters and socks, Cnot to mention darning the holesl, Mother is playing a tre- mendously important role by assisting Hirsch to prove its real Service to the Home and the Community in Wartime. The Service Men's Center at Grand Crossing Park owes its exist- ence and its success in great part to our P.T.A. This service is some- thing brand new, besides the promotion ot the sale of War Bonds. College Day was an event at Hirsch. Representatives from key colleges, at the invitation of the P.T.A. gave us a birds-eye view of college life and a tantalizing opportunity to see how it ticks. These are only a few of the reasons why we're so proud of our Parent Teacher Association. Lf-5 5 E' ' .A fs ,I . I A Mother's work is never done, A Teacher works all day. We find examples at every turn -the scrap drives, bond pur- chases, ambulance fund, and the will tho work for VICTORY among all the students. Our older organ- izations, as well as the newer ones created for the war effort, all work for one thing -VICTORY: and as an important incidental, the par- ticipators make themselves better prepared for future lives as good citizens I PM 5 .Q is rgil. ,.. ,-,W mf? 4, fb., vi Q lf T If ,, H i 1 fifth AL V if i l nk ZZ 2- ' 7 -V5.5 3-qi- 55 'll nu, 1, F sgiuclenf Cjouncz O The Student Council,-of the students, by the students, for the studentsewith Mrs. lackson as the guiding inspiration, is the All Powerful Congress of Hirsch. Every semester, great campaign- ing goes on in every division as students who wish to become members use the necessary flowery talks and campaign speeches. Then, with marks and fellow classmates willing, he is elected. And,-there's Harry Hirsch who isn't a member, but does he sit around idle? Oh No! Right off he joins one of the four bureaus, Finance, Civic, Publicity, or Traffic. We owe a debt of gratitude to this active governing body-especially this year when their efforts have contributed so much to Hirsch's successful victory drives. 94 STUDENT COUNCIL Left: Leon Lublinsky, Pres.: Priscilla Stone, Vice Pres.: Elly Benson, Secretary: Bill Croxton, Treasurer: Donald Day, Publicity Bureau Chairman: Betty Kelty, Civic Bureau Chairman: Mildred Morgan, Finance Bureau Chairman: Anita Neuman, Safety-Traffic Bureau Chairman: Iohn Roblin, Chief Hall Guard: Chief Fire Mar- shall: Richard Bockelman, Senior Iudge. The H.B.I. lHirsch Bureau of Investigationl 0 Every Monday and Wednesday during ninth period, various students are sum- moned to appear in court for various reasons. It might be high crimes and mis- demeanors, or it may be only as a witness in case he was at the scene of the crime. There are two judges, senior and junior, and without prejudice they give study periods to deserving culprits in a very impressive way. Not having a lock on your locker is deserving of punishment, as are walking through halls Without a pass, driving cars during lunch periods and thousands of other things. . . . . When any of these crimes are committed, the culprit is given an arrest slip stating when he shall appear in court. The court supplies defense lawyers, and with his tale of woe the defendant and his lawyer battle it out with a prosecuting attorney. The judges decide whether or not the defendant is guilty and declare sentence as they think fit. BAR ASSOCIATION How 1: I. Miller, E. Tuerk, A. Napp, R. Bockelman, L. Lubinslcy, S. Porter. Row 2: E. A group of scholarly, book-wormish brief case carriers? Students who can define a noun, but not a conga line? Far from this extreme are the members of the National Honor Society. Although they are honor students in class, they also are honor students in those activities which benefit the school. They work for the improvement of the school and the devel- opment of their personalities. Believing that a well balanced person- ality is composed of equal parts of char- acter, scholarship, leadership and service, the members of the National Honor So- ciety try to follow these ideals and com- pose the elite of the school. He's a reporter on the HIRSCH HERALD, the publication full of social and scholastic news which greets Hirschites every two weeks. Our junior Horace Greeleys may be seen daily in the Press Room, writing, revising and elaborating on facts. Theirs is an important work on the paper, but in reality it is only a spoke of the large wheel rolling out the news. Around them work the proofreaders, those grammatical wizards who correct copy before it is sent to the printers. A great responsibility falls to the editors who must see that everything fits-from the headline through to the ads. Speaking of ads, we must mention the persistent people who persuade merchants to advertise in the HERALD and the thanks they deserve. The composition of the HIRSCH HERALD is supervised by Miss Caturah Fisher who helps the promising young journalists bring out their hidden talents. Mr. Russell McNally handles the business end of our paper, while the Circulation department scurries through the halls over- laden with their precious burdens. In return for five small pennies they hand out the latest to frivolous Freshmen, sophisticated Sophomores, jittering Iuniors, and seasoned Seniors. Egos are inflated when names appear in print, for who doesn't like to see his own name in the PAPER? Everyone loves our HIRSCH HERALD, and those connected with it deserve all possible credit. .1-33, my Sf 15 W? , -A ll Y MVN U ,4- 4 'Y 41- fr All FN 1' , 4 ,O xl , P A4222 Q . wifA correcfionri I dread to take a Writeup To editors who change things: Who say, That's fine, just what we want, But let us rearrange things. Let's move that sentence over, And make a paragraph, And add another ccmrna lust in case the sponsor laughs. You're way beyond your word count. You'll have to cut it down: You might take out these first few words But don't forget the noun. Don't clutter up the article With meaningless statistic, 'Cause nothing makes us editors Look quite so pessimistic. Their first step toward this goal was surveying the communities for needed and valuable war mate- rials. Their efforts were abundantly rewarded and they returned with smiles of VIC- TORY. Their next step was giving a Valentines' Dance, which was a very successful affair. Through their spirit of co-operation and determination, they raised the first SlO0.00 for our Ambulance to be donated to our Armed Forces. The Gold is under the sponsorship of Miss Sue Mechtersheimer whose abil- ity of getting the most out of students is well known throughout Hirsch. It isn't really necessary to have a write-up for the Gold because we all know that actions speak louder than words. GROUP 1 Row I: Iack Kaleher, M. Gier, I. Sweeney M. Rudin, B. Hoffman, A. The registration of student cars and bicycles was taken over and bicycle racks were placed in the courts to clear the sidewalks. With the help of the Hall Guards, they improved and enforced the traffic regulations. With the coming of war, the Safety Engineers took on more responsibility. Last fall, when the country called for scrap metal, Hirsch responded, and through the joint efforts of the Safety Engineers and the Gold over one hundred tons of scrap were brought in, giving Hirsch third place in the city-wide drive, and helping Chicago obtain first place in the country. Early this spring, a drive for Bronze, Brass and Copper was conducted with profitable results. Much of the money in our ambulance fund may be traced to the money from their paper collection. With a member from each English, Civics and History class, the group is truly representative of the whole school. In peace and in war, the Safety Engineers have contributed greatly to Hirsch's welfare. To their hard working sponsor, Miss Sue Mech' tersheimer, is due the thanks and appreciation of faculty and Stu- dents for the fine work done by this group. 75- -It K t. ft- PAN-AMERICAN LEAGUE Table: A. And why are they so called? Why, just because their lovely singing pro- motes the good spirits that are so important at this time. Under the expert direction of Mrs. Constance Nicklaus, they perform at the various functions here at Hirsch, as well as at many organizations outside of school. Their Rush Tea is known throughout the whole school to be one of the best methods for getting new members into an organiza- tion. So you may consider yourself very fortunate if at any time you are rushed by a member of the Senior Girls' Glee Club. Another of their many accomplishments is their ability as saleswomen. Last year's season of football saw them selling Maroon felt pennants to be worn at the games. Every Friday is devoted to a business meeting with the officers presiding and the members par- ticipating. If time permits they have a pro- gram during this period with the purpose of discovering new talent. The members of the Senior Girls' Glee Club are proud to be able to do the fine things they are doing and we want them to know that Hirsch is proud of them. SENIOR GLEE CLUB Row l: L. Larson, C. Their work is climaxed with Clean Up Week when they spread their efforts through the whole community. One of their most important duties this year was the col- lection of discarded silk and nylon hose to be turned over to the government. The Committee is under the able leadership of Miss L. Ross. The fear of fire can be erased from your mind, for deputies, in- spectors, and fire guards are constantly on the alert, ready to check the deadly menace. Cooperation from the students in fire drills is greatly needed, so consider: they're doing their best: are you? BUY! BUY WHAT? BUY STAMPS! That really describes the Iunior Red Cross to a Besides their annual drive, this group, sponsored by Miss S. Ackerman and headed by E. Trautwein, has also completed a very successful victory book campaign. Iust knowing that our boys in the armed services are benefiting by their efforts is their reward. STAGE CREW 0 Behind the glitter and sparkle of the footlights, behind the clever color effects and dropping of the curtain, are the for- gotten men. This year above all does the stage crew deserve a few laurels. Without a sponsor, Allan Diamond and his crew have conscientiously, willingly, and faithfully performed any and every task asked of them. No stage production could have been realized without them. SERVES ii CCJUNTRY BEST R.CJfT.CI. O The Hirsch High School R.O.T.C. Unit is now in serious training, preparing itself for our sixth annual Federal Inspection. Our unit has brought back the coveted honor rating ever since its conception in September 1937. This is the highest honor an R.O.T.C. Unit can re- ceive, and officers and cadets are working earnestly now, so that later another bar may be added to our plaque of honor. We all believe our unit is the best in the city and our beliefs are Well grounded. The Hirsch R.O.T.C. took third place in the city last year, winning out over twenty from other high schools. A group of the best cadets in the unit made up the Picked Platoon, drilled daily after school, and very ably represented Hirsch at the annual corn- petition. Our rifle team carried on in fine style in spite of the handicap of only two returning lettermen. Our color guard Cin our opinion very good lookingl has served at many assemblies. These facts, in addi- tion to our various parades and revues, give us just cause to enthu- siastically proclaim our unit one of the best. Under our very capable commander, Sergeant Alexander, our able officers, efficient non coms and hard working cadets, We'll make it difficult for any other unit to top us. Due to ninety-six per cent of the student body purchasing stamps, Hirsch won the Minute Man flag for three consecutive months. The raising of the Minute Man Flag flower leftl was a great event here at Hirsch. lts presentation was spurred on by the as- sembly sponsored by the Student Council for the various stamp delegates Cupper rightl, through the influence of the timely posters shown below, and last but not least, through the efficiency of Miss Friedman Cupper leftl who kept careful records of all transactions. Grandmother's treasured clock and your beloved junk jewelry mean defeat for the enemy and vic- tory for the Allies. When our country asked tor scrap, Hirsch, like many other schools, donated time and energy to this war emergency drive, for we believe that no contributicn or sacrifice could possibly be as great as the ones our boys are making for us on foreign battlefields all over the world. The four pictures on the left show how earn- estly our students worked. The top and bottom pictures show our coat hanger day drive. The second shows how the boys religiously weighed the scrap brought in each morning by the students. The third picture gives an idea of the variety of scrap collected-tires, tenders. washboard, in fact any thing that had a scrap of metal or rubber on it was added to com- prise our one hundred seventy-five thousand pounds. HIRSCH came out THIRD in the city's drive for scrap. HIRSCH, WERE PROUD OF YOU. CAMPAIGNS FOR 'Mainly 0 On November tenth, Hirsch presented a Memorial Day Service in honor of Lt. Walter Xavier Young, the first of Hirsch's former students to die in service. Robert Manning Ccenteri gave a stirring talk in his commemoration. Our Ambulance drive Cupper right? has made vast strides in the last few weeks. We have well over seven hundred dollars toward the purchase of an ambulance through the diligence of Miss Mechter- sheimer, Miss Ross and their co-wokers. Mrs. Lotts and her assistants fcenter right? contributed their bit by collecting books to send to the Army camps and Service Centers for recreational purposes. Our country's call for brass, bronze, and copper was answered by our suc- cessful drive for those materials. jW!?u 'ift irfick I N 0 Hirsch in the war effort has attempted and is succeeding in the training of students to better equip them so they will be more able to adjust themselves to the different life that comes with war. The Pre-Flight classes train the future pilots, navigators, and bombardiers of our Air Force. The Poster Club spent much time drawing the posters that spurred the students to buy more war bonds and stamps. The Victory lunch is another achievement of Hirsch in the war effort. Students can get quality as well as quantity and still save money. The students of the Household Arts Department have made cookies and cakes to send to the service men during the Christmas holidays. The clothing classes too have helped in the war effort and gained valuable experience by making bed jackets and slippers for the Bed Cross. The shops also have been busy making model airplanes for the Army Air Corps. Hirsch's ending to a magnificent scrap drive was its participation in Chicago's great jolopy parade. Carmen Petro and Anne Osipenko, whose title of King and Queen of Scrap was due to their untiring efforts in the scrap drive, rode triumphantly in one of Hirsch's contributions of three jolopies-the red one signifying the I will spirit of Chicago, the white chugging under the burden of our King and Queen , and the blue representing Chicago as the Wheels of Industry. 4100: THE WAR EFFORT HIRSCH IN THE WAR EFFORT Right: Our Pre- Fliqht course for senior boys is one of our most impor- tant preparatory courses. Throughout the world, na- tions are on a preparedness basis, with the United States leading them all. We're in front because of our great athletic program. All the way from first grade through college and from there to outside activities, we are building the youth of today, not only physi- cally but morally: not only for the present but for the future. Hirsch, always patriotic, is in there punching with a magniticant sports program. Hirschites excel in sportsmanship: they're in top- notch condition, and through ath- letics are developing quick think- ing, fellowship and spirit. Yesiree!
