Pupils enrolled in other courses may take a language as an elective. The four languages offered at Hirsch are French, Spanish, German, and I..atin. To know the history of foreign people and to develop the ability to speak the language and read the literature are the main objectives of the foreign language course. Science Department Students who are scientifically-minded have the opportunity of enrolling in a general science course and taking all of the sciences offered at Hirsch. General Science and three of the following four subjects-chemistry, physics, botany and zoology-are required. Botany and zoology attempt to familiarize the student with plant and animal life respectively. Chemistry deals with the compo- sition of matter while physics enables the student to understand the principles of the science of mechanics, heat, light, sound, magnetism, and electricity. Commercial Department Any student enrolling in a commercial course must major in bookkeeping, of which two years are required, or stenography, which includes two and one-half years of shorthand. Besides bookkeeping and shorthand, the department offers typing, commercial geography, commercial law, elementary business training, business organization and salesmanship. Commercial law, which is required in the course, deals with property in connection with individuals, partnerships and corporation. In the B semesters, composition and the essay type of writing is stressed while in the A semesters, literature is taught. The 4A course, which covers the history of English literature, is offered to those pupils who intend to enter college. Drama, journalism and public speaking are the other elective courses of the department. 4 Mathematics Department For students who want to receive an excellent background in mathematics, the department oifers an extended course. Beginning algebra, plane geometry, advanced algebra, solid geometry and trigo- nometry are the subjects olfered. The purpose of the beginning algebra course is to give the student a knowledge of formulas and equations. Advanced algebra extends the student's power of the uses of algebra. To attempt to develop the reasoning powers of pupils by the understanding of a deductive 1 proof is the aim of geometry. Trigonometry teaches the practical application of mathematics. , Social Science Department In a social science course, a student is required to study three years of history, one semester of economics and one of civics. World History covers the prehistoric times up to the discovery of America. Modern History concerns the history of Europe from 1492 to the present time and United States History covers the same period in relation to America. Civics, a study of the federal and state laws, is required of everyone expecting to graduate from Hirsch. i l

N Art Department . As well as the one year of art that is required of everyone, the art department of Hirsch sponsors two major credit subjects-advanced art and art appreciation-which are both one semester courses. The main purpose of these courses is to cultivate an appreciation of beauty, to develop a power to produce beautiful things, and to discover and direct the talent of the students. Music Department ' Every student is required to earn two minor credits in music and he may do this by taking two semesters of music or by substituting a year of Choral Club, Glee Club, Band or Orchestra. A major credit is given to any pupil who has completed two or more semesters above the required year. The main purpose of these courses is to provide opportunities for intelligent appreciation of good music. Physical Education Department The aim of Hirsch's physical education department is to provide skilled leadership and adequate facilities that afford an opportunity for the individual to act in situations that are physically whole- some, mentally stimulating, satisfying and socially sound. Girls' gym classes are divided into two teams and are instructed in hockey, soccer, captain basket- ball, basketball, volleyball and baseball.
