In the B semesters, composition and the essay type of writing is stressed while in the A semesters, literature is taught. The 4A course, which covers the history of English literature, is offered to those pupils who intend to enter college. Drama, journalism and public speaking are the other elective courses of the department. 4 Mathematics Department For students who want to receive an excellent background in mathematics, the department oifers an extended course. Beginning algebra, plane geometry, advanced algebra, solid geometry and trigo- nometry are the subjects olfered. The purpose of the beginning algebra course is to give the student a knowledge of formulas and equations. Advanced algebra extends the student's power of the uses of algebra. To attempt to develop the reasoning powers of pupils by the understanding of a deductive 1 proof is the aim of geometry. Trigonometry teaches the practical application of mathematics. , Social Science Department In a social science course, a student is required to study three years of history, one semester of economics and one of civics. World History covers the prehistoric times up to the discovery of America. Modern History concerns the history of Europe from 1492 to the present time and United States History covers the same period in relation to America. Civics, a study of the federal and state laws, is required of everyone expecting to graduate from Hirsch. i l
