It was not until 1970 that our Hornets managed to reach a 3rd place standing in conference which they held through 1971. Then in 1972 there was another surge and the Hornets reached 2nd in con- ference. Finally in 1973, our harriers achieved their glory by accomplishing a 7-0 record in conference and an 11th place position in the state meet. From 1966 to 1969 the Hornets played at Cog Hill; their records were poor and there were few winning performances. From 1969 to 1973 South played at Old Oanee. Dur- ing these four years South lost no more than 3 meets and was never lower than third in con- ference. In the spring of 1974 the Hornets moved to their present home at Vilage Greeni. The last two seasons, the Hornets have been a strong district contender. 1. Varsity Golf. First row: Steve Ports, Tom Morrow, Dave Bik, Ed Weadman. The team played well as a unit; Coach Foss stressed attitude throughout the season. Attitude was important to the Hornets, because they were playing against older and more experienced teams. This year's team with a 9 win and 6 loss overall record will be a fine base for future teams to build on. 13 113 1 Young 75 team comes back as impressive team of 76 It's hard to believe that the Hornets started in 1966 with only one experienced player. 1968 was a dismal year with the Hornets placing 7th in conference. In 1971, Jack Higgins came in to coach and the Hornets had a rewarding season with a 3rd in conference. A lack of height hampered the 1973 team. Although 1974 was a slow season, the Hornets hustled, but were vici tims of close games. Our 1976 team is a result of a very young 1975 team. They fought well and played hard throughout the season. 114 1. Varsity First Row: Tony Fortuna, Al Camp, Antonio Atkins, Tom Difiglio, John Rainis, Flank Tough, John Rekman. In the 1973-74 season they captured the state title. They achieved an excellent record of 4 wins, 2 losses. In the 1974-75 season they were outstan- ding. They placed sixth in state. This year they were more talented and dedicated than ever. Even though the team had several misfortunes, such as conflicts in schedule, illnesses, and the breakdown of the pool, this year South placed 12th in state. 140 a 4 Girls come long way in three seasons of competition Although the girls' archery team is young, it has shown steady improvement over the past three seasons. In 1973 they competed against five schools, scoring a single victory over East Leyden. The 1974 season was plagued by bad weather. They competed against seven schools, winning only two meets. The team elected Joanne Heggen most valuable player and Kathy Palandech most improved player. In 1975 the young archery team demonstrated the ex- perience they had gained over the past two seasons by going undefeated in nine meets. 1 1. Archers got ready to shoot. 2. In the 1975 season the bowling team placed second in the bowling tournament, although this is only the second year there has been a team at South. The girls don't have a conference this year because not enough schools participate. The girl with the highest average is Carol Hulka with 139. The A team has a record of five wins and seven losses; the B team has a record of six wins and six losses. Dr. Joseph Dalpiaz, Principal FACULTY Administration The administration at Hinsdale South has brought about many changes over the years, providing a broader curriculum while keeping within the traditions of the school. This year Dr. Robert Snyder, whose main concern is curriculum, joined the administrative staff. Although the school is still growing, a con- tinuing concern of administrators is student in- terest in the school, and a desire to maintain a strong school spirit. Hinsdale South provides excellent teachers and growing opportunities for students. Mr. Buford Daniel, Superintendent 193 Dr. Robert Snyder, Vice Principal Guidance When Hinsdale South first opened, the Guidance Department began with only two counselors. Now there are five, along with three social workers and the deans. Oppor- tunities for students have increased; students may now enroll in the DAVEA program and many other programs offering career training. Counselors now offer many work-study programs, help with the hearing handicapped students, and strive to guide students toward intelligent decisions about their futures. They also provide current information to aid in college choices. Along with a large increase in the number of students, more teachers have been added to the staff, resulting in specialists for the various areas of art. New equipment has enabled the department to offer new courses, which give students a wide range for their talents. Though the department is very active, it continues to attract more students with its beautiful displays of student art work. Mr. Kelby Briddick Business Education From a one-person department alone on the third floor when it offered three courses the first year at South, Mrs. Pine, department chair- man, has seen the department grow to its pre- sent strength with eight teachers. They now offer fourteen business courses, and a com- plete program in secretarial, clerical, and marketing skills. The department is also active in work programs, with the Distributive Educa- tion and Office Education programs placing students in office and marketing positions in neighboring businesses. Mrs. Sandra Pine, Chairman Mr. Mel Oftedahl Miss Donna Zielinski Mr. lames Wheelock Mrs. Sharon Kevener Mr. lames Driskill Mrs. Phyllis Carvell Mrs. Margaret Oloffson Mr. Peter Pederson, Chairman Educational Services The Educational Services Department has a resource program to help students who may have difficulty in regular classes. In addition, a student support team has been established this year to help students with special problems. Administrators, social workers, psychologists, staff members, department chairman and counselors all work together to try to deter- mine the best course of action for each stu- dent. The department has fifteen to twenty students this year in its support programs, and they are planning to expand. Mr. Ron Campbell 198 English Major changes have occurred in the English department in recent years. At the junior and senior levels, mini-courses have been developed to offer students a wide range of choices, and the writing programs at both freshman and sophomore levels have been reorganized. A newcomer to South this year, Mr. John VonKerens, department chairman, has brought new ideas to all levels. An in- creased effort Is being made to prepare students for their futures as effective com- municators—as listeners, speakers, and writers. Anschicks Mrs. Eloise Manker Mr. Earl Anschicks 1 200 1. Now if you put a comma here and ..2. Okay, I'll go through it one more time. 3. Have you heard the one about . . . 4. Quiet in the hall! Mrs. Penny Fruechte Mr. Richard Palzer Miss Merle Green Foreign Language The foreign language department has made many changes concerning what is emphasized in language instructions. Students are now lear- ning more about culture and conversation, and have less written grammar, and therefore are better able to understand the origins of the language and the people who speak it. Teachers, most of whom have traveled exten- sively, give students a real taste of the life styles of their different countries. The foreign language clubs have become more active, and student interest in languages is growing. Mrs. Elaine McLaughlin Mrs. Agnes Routbort Mrs. Pamela Messina Mrs. Linda Tibensky Mrs. Rosette Backas Mrs. Colleen LaPelle Home Economics Home Economics, one of the smaller departments at Hinsdale South, has undergone changes each year. Now it seems that more boys are becoming interested and active in the areas of food preparation, diet, child care, and family living. The focus is not only on skills such as clothing and foods, but on psychology and the problems of living in our complex'society today. Consumerism, with the national atten- tion it has received, is also a major concern of the students. The department reflects the changes in society. 203 Hearing Impaired The Hearing Impaired Program has come a long way to provide a remarkable educational program for the deaf. The program started with three students and one teacher in 1966, and there are now over one hundred students with thirteen teachers and supportive services, in- terpreters, notetakers, and resource teachers for those Hearing Impaired students mainstreamed in the hearing classes. Total communication, including speech, lip reading and sign language, is the system of communica- tion used in teaching the deaf. Miss leanne Undate Mrs. Olive Williams Miss Susan Chaben 204 Mrs. JoAnne Gebbie Mrs. Susan Pershell Mrs. Phoebe Williams Miss Barbara Siegel 205 Mrs. Jean Cray, Director Mrs. Shirley Hibbeln Mrs. Mary Winiecki 2 1. Mary Winiecki, Media Specialist; Mrs. Lillian Vicha, Secretary; Mrs. Jan Cielinski, Technician. Instructional Materials Center The Instructional Materials Center has made many improvements since it started. Five years ago the upstairs level was added to provide much-needed space for the growing depart- ment. New services have also been added. For example, the department now can produce its own audio-visual presentations, has a new darkroom, and works cooperatively with teachers to provide audio-visual presentations. Circulation has greatly increased with the new materials available, and at this point, everything is catalogued. 2. Mrs. Colette Hoppe, Clerk; Mrs. lean Cray; Mrs. Shirley Hibbeln, Assistant Librarian; Mrs. Patricia Paidar. Music The Music Department has changed greatly with the addition of the stage band, which has been first in the state contest and Oak Lawn Jazz Festival for the past four years, and first in the Eastern Illinois Jazz Festival for the past two years. Band Members have gone on two con- cert tours, one to Michigan and Wisconsin, and one to Washington, D.C. The music depart- ment is proud of its outstanding students who have played with the Chicago Youth Orchestra and the many who take part in the IMEA District and State Festivals. V- Mathematics The math department provides a good example of having come a long way from its begin- ning in the fall of 1965. At that time there were two full-time and two part-time teachers. Now there are ten teachers, including department chairman, Miss Pauline Bury. Only the basic courses in algebra and geometry were offered in the beginning; now, with many courses added, the department has a computer set-up with two terminals and a CRT, a television com- puter device which aids in visual demonstrations in the classroom. Miss Pauline Bury, Chairman Mr. David Smith Mr. James Carvell Mr. Allen Eiselstein Mrs. Elaine Stephanos Mrs. Donna Beckham 209 Mr. Edward Herzog, Athletic Director Mr. Ed Puck, Coordinator Boys' Physical Education Athletic Director Herzog indicates that one of the biggest changes that has taken place in the athletic program is that IHSA opened com- petitive sports to girls. After four years, they now have nine sports. When South started, there were none. For boys, soccer was started two years ago, making eleven sports for boys now. This year the department has added Adaptive P.E. for students needing smaller classes with modified activities because of health concerns or handicaps. Boys and girls both have wider choices now. Mr. Michael Yavorski Mr. Robert Thomas Mr. Thomas Kordewick Mr. Pete Lohmann 1 210 Mr. David Arnold 1. Pull yourself together! 2. Now about that time you went through the field. . 3. Miss Linda Kerner Mrs. Jean Hillstrom Miss Lynn Braun Mrs. Lynne Slouber Technical Education Having started with Mr. Hubbardtt as the one teacher of five classes of technical education and now having seven teachers and thirty-five classes, you would have to agree that this department has come a long way in eleven years. As more specialized courses have been added, more equipment has been provided to offer students what is now a diversified curriculum. The department is proud of its in- dustrious students, accepting the challenge of a sophisticated technology to adapt to today's world. Mr. Lonnie Swinford 213 Mr. Harold Lathrop, Chairman Science The Science Department at South has increased its course offerings to accommodate the in- creasing interest in science shown by students. New courses in environmental science, ad- vanced chemistry and advanced biology have been added to meet the student interest. With the increasing enrollment in the science courses, every laboratory is used every period of the day. Mr. Lathrop, department chairman, feels that the junior and senior level enroll- ment increase indicates that more students hope for careers in science. Mr. Jim Alexander 214 1. Voila! Strawberry ice cream! 2. V-very, very carefully. 3. Now get this straight! 3 215 Social Studies The Social Studies Department has increased from seven staff members to nine, and now has Mr. Anderson as its full-time chairman. New courses have been added in Psychology II and Western Civilization. In recent years there has also been more emphasis on career education and values clarification, which enables students to take stock of their values in our changing social system. The department now offers students a resource center, where they may ob- tain materials for special projects. Mr. Robert Anderson, Chairman Dr. Joel Stellwagen 216 Services 218 6 1. Especially because it is a Bicentennial year, we felt compelled to have a theme that conveys a message common to all of us. We wanted to illustrate the feeling that although we're proud of our progress through these school years, there are still many challenges ahead with important problems left for us to solve. We hope we’ve done this pictorially for you. We'd like to thank our artists: Dave Wittekind, who created the artwork for our cover; Mary Breier, who drew the symbols we've used for classes and activities; Mike Brookes, Lynn Gately and Mike Dubin, who came through will full page artwork. our photographers: Paul Dunklau, Rod Moody, Todd Pierson and Glenn Smutny, who went out at odd hours to snap Hornets in action. Root Photography: which provided all of the head shots and most of the great photographs in the book, efficiently and cooperatively. the advertisers: for their much needed financial support. all of the students: who helped with advertising, sign making, and the countless other jobs we had to complete.
