You cannot wire it. As you wire a summerβs roses to sell in towns; You cannot cage it or kill it utterly. All you can do is to force year after year from the stream to the cold woods the heavy glitter of wheat. Till its body tires and the yield grows weaker and dies. Rut the field never dies. Though you build on it. Burn it black. Or domicile a thousand prisoners upon its empty features. You cannot kill a field. A field will reach right under the streams to touch the limbs of its brothers. 2 South Studies Nature 4 People 5 But you can cage the woods. You can throw up fences. As round a recalcitrant heart spring up remonstrances. You can always cage the woods. Hold them completely. Confine them to hill or valley. You can alter their face. Their shape: Uprooting their outer splings you can even alter their wants. And their smallest longings press to your own desires. The woods succomh to the paths made throught their life. Withdraw the trees. Betake themselves where you tell them. And acquiesce. The woods retreat; Their protest of leaves whirls pit i fi 111 to the cooling heavens, I.ike seed or dying prayers. 6 Hope, The Foundation of South 7 H Gaining a New Reputation But what can you do with a stream? You can widen it here. Or deepen it there. But even if you alter its course entirely it gives the impression that this is what it always wanted. This year the Hornet running machine had a tremendous season finishing second in the DPVL. The winningest team in Southβs history even managed to better last year s fine record. Four of its members put forth outstanding efforts making them all conference runners. They were John Reichl, Bob Patrick, George McDaniel and Mike Miller. John Reichl and his team brought home seven trophies and over sixty medals. Varsity Cross Country has its best year Sophomores look forward to Varsity year 1st Row: Jeff Reichl, Mark Oswald. The time and effort paid off as they came in first place in the D.P.V.L. conference meet, second in the Hins- dale South Invitational and, third in the Ottawa Invitational. We will all be looking forward to what they will do next year on Varsity. The Freshman Cross Country runners were again coached by Paul Madsen. These fine Freshmen tied for first place in the DPVL, having a record of 5 wins and I loss. They built up their confidence and speed, thus putting in a great season. Each one of these runners showed great potential. We hope to see these runners next year. This yearβs Varsity team had all the ability, strength and hustle needed for a winning season. Their only downfall came at the center position where the lack of height hampered their rebounding throughout the season. Seniors Bill Stumpe and Scott Henderson played masterfully as they were helped by many able seniors and young talented juniors. Coach Jack Hig- gins believed that this yearβs team had, on the whole, more overall ability than any previous year at Hinsdale South. His never ending fight to win and his fabulous communication with the team led to a fun-filled build- ing season where all the players gained experience for college play and for a great basketball season at South next year. The sophomore float sails along winning senior Junior participants sport an original idea for a float Debbie Kenny will always remember this walk A week of spirit . . . This year's Spirit Week, our annual week of activities to foster spirit for the Homecoming game, was memorable to say the least. Enthusiastic participation resulted in the unbelievable decoration of the school walls during the poster contest, the most hotly contested and fiercely fought ice cream eating contest that the school has seen, a rollicking tug of war competition, a rousing pep rally (where Debbie Kenny was chosen Homecoming Queen), and some of the larg- est turn-outs that the Homecoming game has ever had. In the final analysis, this year s spirit week was a rousing success. There was one major mar in the proceedings, though, βspirit'' was carried too far. The action was so rough (eggs were thrown, floats were vandalized, et.) that a curfew had to be placed on the events. 65 Dancing is a world of fun. A twosome enjoying the beat. A tender moment. . . . and a time to fulfill Homecoming Dance . . A swinging couple grooves on. For those who say βIβ, thereβs spirit week. For those who say Weβ, thereβs Homecoming Dance, the traditional get- together for couples which adds to the climax of the spirit week. This year a large gaggle of couples enjoyed the romantic atmosphere and dancing that was there for the taking. And even if they didnβt care to dance, there was still a funky band to listen to. The dance was a major success. 66 tradition with a Enjoying each other's company Happy together Delicious pastries were presented at the bake sale Senior Carnival entertains all! The ring toss always draws a crowd. A young artist shows his talent. Fun and games was the main theme of Senior CaTruvaTthis year, and as always, fun and games were carried out in the greatest fashion. The traditional booths were there, the bake sale, ring toss, the jail, and many more. This year, some new attractions were added, namely, the painting booth, the raffle for Grank Funk concert, and several other new attrac- tions which only added to the enjoyment which everybody shared. Donna Shire attends to the wants of a young reader. Even younger brothers join in on the fun at the ball toss. A smile can be helpful when a deadline comes. Vespa can be described as a group of frantic people, work- ing together, struggling under the weight of thousands of pictures, volumes of copies, bundles of layouts; and suc- ceeding to bring this publication to you. Best to remember was the sorting of new pictures, looking at your friends and acquaintances and wondering how they ever got into those unique poses, looking at yourself and wondering the same thing. Other pleasant memories arise from the ritual of find- ing copy for pictures;enough humor has been exchanged to supply a comedy show' with a respectable script. Malachi Stack (right) is rewarded for his good deed It goes without saying that our thespians are improving. Much of the credit goes to Mrs. Norman and her innovative spirit. The biggest innovation, and the most noteworthy had to do with the changing of scenes in the βMatchmaker.β In times past, the audience would listen to the noises behind the curtains between scenes. Instead, the scenes were changed in full view of the audience, which added an air of informality to the whole affair. The wily feminine mind proved to he the real' matchmakerβ 1st Row: Mar Ba an, Steve Rowe. Vicky Apelloniz. Jean Brady. Donna Robison, Kileen Ryan; 2nd Row: Marv Martin. Jane Brady, Jeff Albiniak. Majorettes in the groove, while forensics does improve. Batons gleaming, feet prancing, faces aglow, the majorettes brighten the way for the hand. At foot- ball games, basketball games, or just imarching out in front of the band in parades, they add a special atmosphere to wherever the band performs. Remember four years ago when forensics could only boast three active members? Forensics has indeed expanded and certainly for the better. The library, a quiet place of study, relaxation, and concentration, at least when the roar of boisterous, or otherwise talkative students subsides. Librarians may inter- upt urgent conversations with the golden rule of the library, which is, βSilence! β. Seriously, our library is one the finer libraries in this area. The Audio-Visual facili- ties provide classrooms with phonographs, projectors, cassette players, and it fea- tures an automatic copier as an added luxury. At Hinsdale South, the group deco- rated one of the winning ears in the Homecoming parade, sponsored a successful candy sale, held a Christmas party, and in general proved the deaf personβs vitality in school activities. Or as one Jr. N.A.D. member put it, βWe were showing our deaf pride.β The Jr. N.A.D. showed its deaf pride out- side the school as well. They earned a large sum of money for I NICTT, collected canned goods for poor people at Thanksgiving and besides that they are trying to earn money for a trip to Washing- ton D.C. As you can see, Jr. N.A.D. is a super active group, an asset to the school and to the community. Jr. N. A. D. sets goal on trip to Washington. % 104 People Rif ,0 J sine 105 Seniors look hack . . . On the last four years. Hou- many seniors remember this club of the past? On September 2. 1969 Hinsdale South was again greeting a new Freshman class. Teachers were wondering what the next four years would be like. At first, four years seemed like a life time but as each year passed a realization took place. Four years were really just a short span of time. On June 7, 1973 that Freshman class would graduate as seniors. For some, this will mean that they can once again look for- ward to becoming freshman. They are: Mrs. Mock for the use of her carbon paper, Judy Prueter for the use of her dictionary, Steve Shepherd for the never ending use of an extra typewriter, the custodians for the tremendous cleaning job after the debris of the deadlines and Jonathon Cape Limited for the publishing rights of Henry Reedβs poem. A special thank you goes to the Vespa staff for their help and their concern for finishing the book. I would also like to thank our two sponsors: Ms Roensch and Ms. Geocaris. They yelled at us when we needed it, laughed at us when we cracked jokes, and stared at us in disbelief when we said the book was completed. To my fellow classmates I give the 1973 Vespa, all 160 pages β to cherish, destroy or w hatever. 160 5 A β¦ β’β’' V I t yjfi ?y . A β’ - y ,v% X
