There is a touch of two hands that foil all dictionaries. There are single careless by words portentous as a big bend in the Mississippi River. Hands, eyes, bywords — out of these love makes battlegrounds and workshop. There is a pair of shoes love wears and the coming is a mystery. There is a warning love sends and the cost of'it is never written till long afterwards. There are explanations of love in all language and not one found wiser than this: There is a place where love begins and a place where love ends — and love asks nothing — Carl Sandburg '-'X LOVE With a Southern Accent HINSDALE SOUTH Riders To The Sea Cathleen Donna Heggie Nora Sue Klein Maurya ......................JoAnn Bronec Bartley Bob Heggie Women Kathy Unnerstahll, Linda Kurle, Julie Freischlag, Angie Miller Men Perrin Vitkus, Eric Thiele, Paul Jones, Joe Murphy Hooray For Adam Spelvin: He Is Perfect Grace Spelvin George Spelvin Cynthia Craddock Florence Craddock Adam Spelvin Fat Phyllis . . Vera's home town is Monte Aprazivel in Sao Paulo, Brazil, where she lives with her parents and two sisters. During her stay here, she has lived with the Harrisons and their daughter, Jayne. The Harrisons also have another daughter, Pat, who graduated from South last year. When asked how she likes America, Vera said, I really like it here. The people are so nice. All we can say is, Wccome, Vera! It's been great having you here. 18 19 Beautiful People Beautiful people you live in the same world as I do but somehow I never noticed before today I'm ashamed to say. Beautiful people we share the same back door and it isn't right, we've never met before, but then we may never meet again. If I weren't afraid you'd laugh at me I'd run and take all of your hands, and I'd gather everyone together for a day, and when we'd gathered I'd pass buttons out that say, Beautiful people, then you'd never be alone cause there'll always be someone with the same button on as you. Including everything you do. Beautiful people you ride the same subway as I do every morning, that's got to tell you something, we've got so much in common, I go the same direction that you do. So if you'll take care of me, Maybe I'll take care of you. Beautiful people you look like friends of mine and it's about time that someone said it here and now I make a vow that sometime somehow I'll have a meeting invite everyone you know I'll pass out buttons to the ones who come to show beautiful people will never have to be alone cause there'll always be someone with the same button on as you Including everything you do they may be sitting right next to you, they may be beautiful people too and if you'll take care of him maybe he'll take care of you cause all the beautiful people do. -Melanie 21 Band members do their thing to support the football team! With loud voices and mixed emotions, the crowd backs its team. There are always the runners themselves to cheer on their team. 23 24 25 26 ?7 Something For 28 Everyone Top Left: Rich (Little Richie) Heseman checks out three. Top Right: Sheer strength and composure show in gymnast's routine. Bottom Loft: Tension builds for the Hornet gymnasts. Bottom Right: The joy of student center. 29 At the end of a long day there is always a mad rush to get home. A secluded door way is a lot quieter than the cafeteria. 30 Hey, did you know that ? 31 n EMILY MOORE Student Council — 1; Oklahoma — 3; Varie- ty Show —1,2. Under the constant supervision of Coach Schrader, the team built upward toward victory. In past years, the team has had good size. However, this year the large line- man was not to be found. This did not stop the Hor- nets though; they started everygame with the will to win. The highlight of the season was the East Leyden game. Playing away from home and with the odds heavy against them, they almost upset state ranked East Leyden. Bob Anderson anxiously awaits the next play. 148 HINSDALE SO. 31 MORTON E. 20 8 ADDISON 11 7 WEST LEYDEN 6 6 DOWNERS SO. 26 8 WILLOWBROOK 15 8 MORTON W. 23 8 EAST LEYDEN 31 6 GLENBARDE. 28 VARSITY WIN-LOSS-TIE EAST LEYDEN 7 0 GLENBARDEAST 6 1 DOWNERS GROVE SO. 4 2 1 MORTON WEST 3 4 WEST LEYDEN 2 4 1 ADDISON TRAIL 2 4 1 WILLOWBROOK 1 5 1 HINSDALE SOUTH 1 6 Mike Utz on the punt. One game they would shine and win by 20, then turn right around and in the next game not score a point. Despite the absence of several key players that were moved to varsity, the team was successful in recording a season record of 4 wins and 4 losses. Every team has its leaders and ours is no exception. Leading the offensive charge was the combination of Jeff Rabold to Larry Hei- den, plus the fine running of Randy Jackson. On the de- fensive side fine performances were turned in by Bob Bowers and Ernie Hatchell. With continued improvement from these boys, next year's varsity should look very promising. . Front Row: J. Under the direction of Coach Karnstedt the team finished third in the tough D.P.V.L. conference. The 5-3 record is misleading though be- cause with a few breaks the Hornets could have been undefeated. The team was loaded with talent, as evi- denced by the four all conference selections of Bob Lareau, Gary Brown, Bob Patrick, and John Reichel. They won four invitational champi- onships, the conference dual meet record, and the all- important conference meet. Each member deserves an extra pat on the back. With only 7 var- sity wrestlers, the team was forced to bring up inexperi- enced freshmen and sophomores. Despite this, there were many fine performances turned in by Terry Ander- son, Bob Mengarelli, and Bill Lamb. Hinsdale South has much to be proud of in this year's varsity bas- ketball team. The team finished with a fine 13-8 record and took third in the tough Des Plaines Valley Conference. With the dawn of the big man, John Underwood, South was able to domi- nate the rebounding game. In addition, the all-conference selec- tions of senior guard Kevin Feldott and senior forward Cary Jones formed a trio which opposing teams found difficult to stop. Ju- niors Scott Henderson and Bill Stumpe each contributed 10 point averages to show the outstanding balance of this year's team.
