We may have lost the Homecoming game, but in our hearts it was a victory. The many beautiful floats that took part in the parade demonstrated a week of hard work. All students who worked on the float building looked forward to half-time when the winning float would be an- nounced. The Senior class won the prize. The Homecoming dance did turn out to be a Knight of all Knights. It was worth all the trouble and the many hours of preparation it took to make it a success. The fine talent of the cast and the work and cooperation of other students all helped to make the fall play a huge success. Christina Felpeto spent her senior year away from her home- land, Argentina, and came to learn the culture and customs of the people in the United States. In addition to her regular schedule of classes, Christina has taken part in many extra curric- ular activities. Between school and home, where she resides with the Charles Stejskal family, Chris has learned all about our Ameri- can way of life, and in return she has taught us all the true meaning of friendship. This year has been as rewarding for South's other stu- dents as it has been for Christina. 78 80 We will Unique times •r Opposite Page — Left: Gary Lela instructs participants in tricycle race. Homecoming 1970 was a big suc- cess due to the efforts of the newly organized Homecoming Commit- tee. Under the direction of Chair- man Cathy Schlembach, the com- mittee planned spirit week, the pep rally, and finally the Homecoming parade and dance. It was their hard work that made our 1970 Home- coming a most enjoyable event for the entire student body. Future Teachers of America F.T.A. The football season of 1970 started off with a real good win. Howev- er, it was the last one we saw all year. It seems as though we tripped and fell and never stood up again. Despite this, the team's spirit nev- er wavered and their drive never seemed to falter. In previous years, the defensive line seemed to dominate the football picture for Hinsdale South, but this year's defense didn't seem to be strong enough. They fought hard, but the other teams always seemed to prevail. 136 Hornets go all the way for a T.D. Front Row: Mgr. John Stewack, Steve Mattlin, Marty Volk. Offense played the game like it should be played, but the other teams again seemed to keep one step ahead. No matter how well we played, that one step became harder and harder to catch. The Home- coming game, where an on side kick gave turn to the most exciting two minutes of the whole season, still ended in defeat. Kurt Harz lets it go. Despite the disappointments of the year, the Hornets' spirit never lacked drive or determination. The future of our Varsity team seems promising. Our building blocks are strong and determined. It was the best showing the school has seen with our Hornets finishing third in the conference. Phil Vitkus, captain of the team, was the most out- standing runner this year finishing first in most of the meets. However, credit must also be given to the other fine Varsity runners Dale Oldis, Gary Hodges, Bob Lareau, and Gary Brown who all displayed outstand- ing ability in endurance runs. Last but not least, we must credit Coach Karnstedt for driving and guiding his team through a very satisfying season. 142 State runner Phil Vitkus Sophomore Cross Country The Hornets are running hard. The Sophomore Cross Country runners gave a good show this year. All the team members did their jobs well. They ran in the rain — they ran in the heat, a true show of hard work. To be able to endure what they endured and to keep on run- ning is a sign of a good athlete. All of them certainly had the signs. We look to them for another great Varsity team. Concentrating on defense, and under the direction of first year coach Jack Higgins, the Hornets played steady basket- ball throughout the season. This year's junior-varsity team showed very much promise in their short schedule. The JV games were mostly played on Saturday morn- ings, thus giving the players a small amount of rest the night before. Their best attribute was the ability to come back after being down. This was evident in the Wheaton North game when, after being down by 13, they came back to win. Regu- lar performers on the team were Gary Jones, Todd Walker, and Rick Griffin. Others who con- tributed to the team effort were Mike Sebela, Roy Goodwin, and Tom Poswilko. The Frosh and Soph teams did well this season. Scott Henderson, Bill Stumpe, and Mike Utz were regular starters throughout the season for the sophomores. On the freshman side, the team made a good showing this year.
