Mr. and Mrs. Murray and Steve were among regular fans. SHH-H-H, QUIET -Students found the carpeted library a pleasant place from the first day of school, even though the shelves looked o little empty for a while. The library staff had worked all summer so that there would be books and materials available from the first day. Photograph by Herrlin Studio DISTINGUISHED GUESTS . . . Among the platform guests at the dedication were Superintendent C. E. Speorman (speaking), school board members, and other administrative personnel. AND THIS IS THE GYM” . . . says Diana Homme, o guide for group tours following the dedication. JUST WHAT I WANTED . . . Mr. Murray accepts the school for the school staff and students. School Dedication Highlights October October 3 was one of the most important days in the history of Hinsdale South. On this day the school was dedicated. Dr. C. E. Spearman, superintendent of schools, in- troduced the platform guests. Giving the principal ad dress was Dr. Albert Crewe, director of Argonne Na- tional Laboratory. Mr. L. D. Murray, principal of Hinsdale South accepted the building for the school staff. After the retirement of colors by the American Legion, tours were guided by the staff aids of the school. Re- freshments were served in the cafeteria. WELCOME TO HINSDALE SOUTH . . . Kay Baumann, Mrs. Alice Robertson and Mr. John Hubbartt greet people as they arrive at the dedication. DON'T YOU THINK TEN GLASSES ARE ENOUGH? . . . says Mrs. Leo of the cafeteria staff to Jim Fanning, Dave Vineyord, and Ray Bonnell as they receive refreshments. THIS IS CONCENTRATION! WHO IS HE? . . . Students get their first glimpse of their new principal, Mr. Leslie Murrary. STUDENTS BECOME WORKERS . . . Moving in continued through the first week of school. Pat Kush, and Mike Cahill lend o hand with some heovy work. Opening Days Were Sometimes Hectic Opening day at Hinsdale South proved to be a hectic one. Painters, carpenters, electricians and plumbers mingled with students. Many classes met in alternate rooms because equipment was being installed in the regular classroom. No one seemed to know where the auditorium or homerooms were, and some wondered it they should go to the auditorium tor homeroom. Atter the assembly conducted by Mr. Murray, every- one felt a little more confident, because they realized that a great deal of preparation and planning had been done by the staff before they arrived. HM-M-M-M . . . MR. BUFORD DANIELS, assistant principal, sizes up the student body entering the gym for a pep rally. A SIGHT FOR SORE EYES . . . Joyce Robinson, Carol Begley, ond Debbie Owen put on a skit at pep assembly. Sophs Are Tops; Drills Spice Days The first few weeks in the new school were quite different from the first weeks in on old school. Fresh- men still had to get used to high school, but here sophomores had a new experience. They were the big kids and would be for the next three years. The confusion gradually subsided, however, and stu- dents picked up the routine of classes, homerooms, lunch, and more classes. Fire drills brightened the days occasionally, especially when some classes didn't receive a notice to Disregard the bells. Some had three or four drills in one day. Another surprise came when Mr. Murrary announced, ’False alarm, false alarm. Return to your classes, and the outside doors were locked, leaving several classes out in the cold. TOUCHDOWN, TOUCHDOWN . . . scream the cheerleaders from the sideline of a home game. Pictured ore Rena Moyers, Lisa Knight, Mary Wisniewski, and Char Brown. HINSDALE SOUTH, LET'S GO . . . Students sing the school song at pep roily in the gym. Pep Rallies, Mixers Sports Get Started By October Hinsdale South was beginning to re- semble a normal high school with mixers, pep rallies, assemblies, and football games (even though they did start at such an unbelievable hour on Saturday morn ings.) Cheerleaders practiced, tried out, and were selected by a committee of faculty and students. A new school song was composed and learned, although many had to look on copies at the first pep rallies. Cross Country and football were followed by winter sports. Records in all these events showed great progress for a first-year school. HOW TO MAKE A DINNER LAST 100 YEARS . . . Dramatists Sandy Bemis, Judy Moore, Lynn Thobaben, and Judy Lork portrayed characters in A Long Christmas Dinner. Christmas Vacation Extended 3 Days! A Long Christmas Dinner was presented before the holidays by a group of voluntary dramatists under the direction of Miss Laverne Hartmann. The band and choir also gave their first concerts at this time. A few problems arose when production time was moved up a few days because of an unexpected ex- tension in vacation time. Students, however, were de- lighted with the three days added to the vacation. The long days following Christmas were brightened by the Booster Club's basketball game between the Hinsdale South faculty and the faculty of the feeder schools. A new attendance record was set for the gym as 1,500 saw this game. THE THINKERS THINK TWICE . . . Miss Hartmann, Kathy Simmons, and Martha Ford ponder the problem of what to do when hearing the play was pushed up to an earlier date. I OH, GARY, YOU'RE SO NICE . . . Miss Hortmonn seems to regret declining to dance with Gary Lang. SMILE, YOU'RE ON CANDID CAMERA . . . Peppy Mrs. Holman and Mrs. Novak cheered the Hinsdale South he-men to a victory over the faculty from elementary schools. NOW LISTEN!! But don't you think yellow would look good in the kitchen,' Mrs. Smith says to husband, as he tries to concentrate on the ballgame. FIRE DRILL, FIRE DRILL . . . Evacuate the deck. Martin Hartley, Bruce Adams, Mike Lamb, and Joe Nikola scram for the water as a false alarm is given by an unseen smorty pants. KARATE ANYONE . . . Rena Moyers and Candy Boutin, sophomore cheerleaders, do a routine. WHAT S FOR DESSERT? . . . Rich Wold, Pefe Klug, Roy Bonnell, Ken Ponas, Mike lamb, Bill Gabel and Dave Vineyard think lunch is the best period of the day. COME OUT, COME OUT . . . wherever you are. Mr. Leggett pleads with Jolly Green Giant, Jr., after his Jolly Green Giant, Sr. died of too much tender loving care. Corny Contest Adds Life to Spring Daze February and March brought the first signs of spring, and anxious biologists in Mr. Leggett's classes began planting a crop of one seed of corn each. The biggest corn stalk grown won a prize of points on the biology grade. The contest developed much interest with stu- dents competing against Mr. Leggett's entry, Jolly Green Giant. The state swimming meet held at Hinsdale South brought crowds of people to the school. The swimming finals and candids from the school were featured on television. Parents visited school in March and attended classes for seven minute sessions (a little shorter than normal). Luckily for parents, no tardy reports were made. Publications Staffs Record First Year Work on the publications at Hinsdale South this first year was strictly on a voluntary basis, and maybe some of the staff members didn't realize how much time they had volunteered when they signed up! Early in the year staffs for the publications were selected and editors named by advisor, Mrs. Sandra Smith. The staffs then chose the names for the publica- tions. The yearbook was named The Vespa, which means hornet,'' the school nickname, and the news- paper was appropriately named, The Stinger. Yearbook editors Kay Beeks, Kay Baumann, Marge Fehling, and Jim Stratman attended a yearbook work- shop at the University of Illinois in October which got their work off to a good start. Sales reached 350 which was the goal of the staff. This represented about 84 percent of the student body. The Hinsdale South Student Council is composed of one member from each freshman and sophomore homeroom. An alternate was also elected to serve when the regular representative could not be present. Besides projects of school service, the group has sponsored school mixers, and other money raising projects. Writing the council constitution has been a big task of one committee. 40 Guards Work At Swimming Events Excellence, enthusiasm, service is the motto of the Hinsdale South Guard Organization.
