LOCJJUNC1 DACKWJ-XRD As taken from the Cattaraugus County History of 1879, 'In 1818 the first framed schoolhouse was erected at Scotts Corners From that time until 1835, schoolhouses and scholars increased rapidly The census report of 1835 reported as follows 16 school districts and 663 scholars The pri vately owned Hinsdale Academy was opened in 1843 This institution flourished for some two or three years, and we are assured that as an institution of learning it was a success, but a failure financially The property was finally purchased by the authorities of the school district and is now used as a dis trlct schoolhouse and town hall The number of the school districts decreased to 8 and the number of scholars to 513 The Hinsdale Union Free District was formed in 1890 and was owned jointly by the town of Hinsdale and the school district as it was used for both town meetings and school The first principal was the Rev H R Harris The sec ond principal was Mr Fred I Gray who now resides in Rushville, N Y and who often attends the Annual Alumni Banquet There were three teachers for the three departments in this school the prhmary, the intermediate and the high hall According to the booklet published in l9l2 'The Hinsdale Union High School Building is situated ln the village of Hinsdale, Cattaraugus County, N Y on high ground back of and fronting the beautiful public park Its ob ject was for the advancement of the pupils who have completed the pre academic course, to encourage higher education to lead the students of today to see that one without a fair competency in educational affairs is looked down upon as unfit for their ordinary vocations in life upward and onward education leads the way The new centralized building is situated at the lower end of Hinsdale village Hinsdale, by having one of the first centralized schools in this section of the state, is still leading in education The new central district formed on June 24, 1934, was originally made up of the following districts Hinsdale Union School 52 Hinsdale l May District Hinsdale 4 Upper Haskell Hinsdale 5 Fay Hollow Hinsdale 6 Union Valley Hinsdale 7 Capron District Hinsdale 10, Maplehurst Ischua 93, Farwell District Ischua 07, Dutch Hill In 1939 two more districts Hinsdale 33, Five Mile, Ischua 54, Quebec, joined the central distrlct At the present time Olean 52, Pleasant Valley, is contracting to send its pupils here The present registration of pupils is about 365 Since its organization as a union school, Hinsdale schools have graduated about 192 pupils Q ru , r 0 OOO!
