Cooperating closely with the administration and faculty, it gives the students a strong democratic government, run by the students for the students. The Student Council Board is the nucleus of the Student Council. Its main function is to present ideas and plans to the General Assembly. The board is composed of the live annually elected oflicers, the four class presidents, and the four members-at-large. The Board has worked diligently to maintain our school's fine reputation and to increase its prestige to an even greater degree. General Assembly meetings conduct and transact all the major business of the Student Council. It is composed of the Student Council Board. a representative from each homeroom, the three girls' clubs' presidents, and the chairmen of the various Student Council connnittees. Homeroom rep- resentatives take back to their respective homerooms the ideas and prob- lems discussed and opinions given to the representative. In this way, every student has a voice in the government. Many worthy drives are sponsored by Student Council. The Used Book sale at the beginning of the year furnishes the student ati opportunity to sell his books. Each year Student Council pays five cents on each activity ticket sold to help make student insurance available. Initiation of freshmen and all-school mixers are other activities of the organization. Elections are held in the spring of the year to elect the next year's officers and members-at-large. These elections feature a regular campaign and are run on a sane and an intelligent plane. Officers are elected from each class. Margaret Cryor has brought much honor to HTHS by serving a term as secretary of the Illinois State Student Council Association. The Variety Show closes the year's activities. The 1953-54 ofhcers have been: John Mathias, presidentg Stephen Yeretsky, vice-presidentg Martha Melin, secretaryg Fred Houck, treasurer, and Gretchen Ahrens, social chairman. Page 9 if
