Text from Pages 1 - 144 of the 1964 volume:

THE SPIRIT OF H.H.S. is H IGHWA Y THIS IS THE IT ' S WORK . . . 8 a.m. to 2:22 p.m. . . . seems like an eternity Pages and pages of notes . . . Notebooks, textbooks, assignments, deadlines Upstairs and down again . . . Then, at last, the bell. Now to meetings, practice, make-up work . . . Still the weekend— decorations for the big dance. Class projects . . . play rehearsals. Sunday night already? Is that book report due tomorrow? If I can just pass, let someone Else make the honor roll. 2 SPIRIT OF H.H.S. IT ' S PLAY . The gym crowded with students . . . A rally ... A Hootenanny . . . Everybody clapping, singing. Standing room only. The Boyfriend. Full house, both nights. A cast party, everyone reveling in success. A joke, a date, a girl-boy field hockey game. A dance that isn ' t over until the last record is played. A change from the exhausting concentration of school. IT ' S LONELY . . . IT ' S CROWDED Classes on the stage . . . classes in the cafeteria . . . classes in the teachers ' rooms . . . Assemblies for two grades only, A new wing needed, but not yet built- Complicated, maybe, but somehow we manage— Stay to the right, keep moving . . . You ' ll make class in four minutes. Crowded, not really. Just togetherness. IT ' S FRIENDLY . . . Hi, how are ya? Hfey, take it easy. Call ya tonight. A smile, a hasty hi, joking between classes. The atmosphere of a classroom interrupted by a teacher ' s dry humor. Dates, dances, and parties. Full cars headed for away games. ... At H.H.S., ' no man is an island. IT ' S COMPETITIVE . IT ' S FRUSTRATING . . . Homework, tests, quizzes . . . Sorry, Friday night ' s out— got to study. Probably will fail the test Monday anyway— what ' s the use? Football practice, hockey— nnissed the pass for that big score . . . Just one of those days when nothing goes right. Prom ' s next weekend — where ' s the work crew? Pain, sweat, worry— At last a term paper finished to per- fection — reward? Good thinking, but missed the point completely. Trying to be an athlete, musician, actor, social whirl, and good student all rolled into one What does it all prove? That coke machine . . . IT ' S REWARDING Not everybody gets certificates of merit, special commendations. Few are honored in assemblies. But those who are— those who make the touchdowns, win the scholarships, star in the plays— These make us proud— our class does well! Competition— everyone wants his class to be the best. Logical? Yes— part of our spirit. Spirit, in itself, brings rewards. IT ' S A MEMORY . . . For the seniors, it ' s all over. June and graduation . . . Three years becoming dim and indistinct— blurred . . . The morning announcements; the thought for the day; the menus that ought to change; the 3:30 bus; The parties— Little Richard blaring on the stereo The smell of Weymouth Arena, a mixture of cold and cigarette smoke- Things we were a part of, but gone now. Everyone is off to College, work, or the armed services. Will we see each other again? Who knows? But whether we ever meet again— we will remember H.H.S. ADMINISTRATION AND FACULTY who does that man at the front desk think he is? We ' re in high school now— don ' t need to be told what ' s right and wrong. And yet, he was once a member of our class, too. Could it be he learn- ed more of life as he left his high school years behind? He offers us more than sine laws, atomic formulas, or Hamlet ' s solilo- quy. He teaches us a way of life, a thought for the day, a standard to live by. He ' s shown us life from a new per- spective. Yet, although we may oppose his views today, tomorrow we will share them. I I II Adminisi PRINCIPAL Paul H. Farris At great risks our forefathers se- cured and passed on to us some of the great blessings of liberty and freedom. Each generation is on trial to defend and extend these privi- leges and rights. Let us not in our drive for security and prestige lose sight of the ultimate goals of life. Material security can be one of the great enemies of mankind. Free- dom and liberty may be secured at a great cost. No price is too high to pay. SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS Dr. John H. Lawson To The Graduates: To look is one thing. To see what you look at is another. To understand what you see is a third. To learn from what you understand is still something else. To act on what you learn is what really matters. This anonymous quotation lists many of the essentials of an educated person in the year 1964. You have had the opportunities in the Hingham schools to proceed well on the way to your goals. Your future progress will be determined on how you act on what you have learned. It is with great pride that I offer my congratulations to the 1964 graduating class which has set high stand- ards for future classes to emulate. HINGHAM SCHOOL COMMITTEE L to R: Nelson N. Cochrane, Walter F. Schucard, Edward M. Lewieckl, Ian S. Menzies, Robert A. 12 tration ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL Irmin L. Pierce, Jr. To The Class of 1964: You have gone through school as a group, working together demo- cratically to choose your officers, de- cide your policies and accomplish your aims. You have also gone through school as individuals, each developing his own aims and ambitions, seeking and finding help in the resources which the school offers to all and growing mentally by contact with other minds. Your experiences here typify the American way of life, and I hope that you are now ready for the broader experiences that you will find in the years ahead. My best wish for you is that you will be good citizens, that you will cherish high ideals, and that you will enjoy living. ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT Charles W. Lamontagne Your ladder of opportunity is before you. You will, we are sure, grasp it and climb to untold successes. Our world shall and must be hopeful in you, our youth, for your imagination, your intellect, and for your answers to the great unsolved problems of our time. Archibald MacLeish has phrased it very well: East were the dead kings and remembered sepulchres: West was the grass. Congratulations and best wishes to the Class of ' 64. The day that in June seemed an eternity away. Shopping for school supplies. Cars again fill the parking lot. Everything straight lines and business-like A through E. Room 122. New faces. Sophomores asking directions being led the wrong way. Reluctance. Fear. Indecision. Weeks pass. School is again just a routine. Six periods a day. Twenty minutes for lunch. Football victory parades. Dances every week. Enthusiasm takes over where fear left off. Desires, triumphs, expectations, hopes . . . 19 HHS football team provided many thrills during the fall while play- ing against teams that were of- ten much bigger. After a some- what slow start, Hingham rolled up two impressive shutout vic- tories over Stoughton (28-0) and arch-rival Scituate (6-0). Later during the season the team re- corded one of the major upsets of the season when it blanked previously undefeated Needham (6-0) in the rain. The highlight of the season was the 20-0 win at Newton South which climaxed three successful years for the seniors. Where ' s the dime? ' He ' s not hunting for bear! FIRST ROW: D. Hutton, R. Field The girl ' s field hockey team had the unique opportunity this fall to open their season by hosting a demonstration game between the South African touring team and the Boston team played at Michelson Field. Besides this unusual event, the team again attended the annual field hockey workshop held at Wellesley College early in the fall. The team ' s record of five wins and five losses was climaxed by a discouraging loss at the first annual boys versus girls field hockey game, which ended a not-altogether successful, but still spirited season. After an opening-meet loss, Hingham ' s young team rolled up several wins before losing to the league champion, Rockland. Because the team finished high in the standings this year, Coach Lombard may well an- ticipate a championship squad next season. Athletic Service Club BOTTOM ROW (I to r): C. Boyce, J. Schofield, E. The Boyfriend, Hingham High ' s first attempt at a musical comedy, played to packed houses both nights and provided an evening of hilarious enjoyment for all who at- tended. Although the musical required a lot of hard work, the cast appeared to enjoy their frolicsome parts, portraying life in the gay 1920 ' s, just as much as the audience enjoyed watching them. Consisting of members from all three classes, it coordinates all student activities, promotes school spirit, pro- vides various services to the school, and acts as the voice of the student body. Among its activities this year, the council sponsored the first dance of the season, exchange student tele- phone calls, gifts to foster children, and a senior scholarship. Brave souls— sitting out in the sun to get a head start on a tan. Parties outdoors— nothing to break, no mOs- quitos yet. Track meets in the rain. Baseball games in the cold wind. Bright colors. More smiles. Cottons and white sneakers. Preparing for the Proms— no time. A year is slipping by— so much and yet so little has happen ed. Seems to go so quickly. Can ' t look back though. It ' s all over— and 250 students pass under the daisies. 55 Track BOTTOM ROW (I to r): F. Snabel, P. Shute, G. Hayward, R. Delaney, F. Lewis, SECOND ROW: W. Demain, J. Lersh, S. Linnebo, R. The juniors make tentative plans for the affair in au- tumn and winter, but in spring they really get busy. The 1963 Junior Prom was entitled Dixieland Dream. The class of ' 64 worked hard and patiently on a southern scene which, when finished, was simple and yet lovely. After the prom the class dined at the Yardarm, in Sci- tuate. The next day every- one packed picnic lunches, gathered blankets, and made a fun-filled trip to the Cape. The Junior Prom is a tradi- tion which shows the class spirit of H.H.S. Congratulations, Sue!
