J we can sit back now and play at being philosophers. we ' ve seen a little more of life- what ever that is— and something of death. we look at those around us— the leaders, followers, scholars, athletes, clowns. 27 we wonder what purpose drove the teachers to spend their time lecturing to or shouting at such confused, apathetic, or maybe even bored individuals as we. 28 29 three hard days of finals- then senior week at last . . . graduation practices in bermuda shorts, the banquet, the prom . . . 30 graduation- it ' s over. 31 what is high school? a football game, a caper, a dance, a lab, an exam? something to help us grow or something to be taken as lightly as possible? it might be some of these things or none at all. 32 sports obviously it would not be practical to engage in war all the time for glory ' s sake. so nnan has invented ways of duplicating much of the glory and eliminating some of the disadvantages of war. and it seems that a sound mind in a sound body is not such a bad idea. here at hhs the right combination of people cheering at or competing in a game or meet makes sports somehow worthwhile. 33 foot The first test of this season ' s team at the AAiddleboro Jamboree led to many hopeful predictions of a successful sea- son. A win at Rockland fulfilled many of these predictions, but Natick was the start of a rough season for the Harbormen. The remainder of the season was unevent- ful, with the exception of the Scituate game. In the last five minutes of play, Hingham leading 14-12, a Scituate half- back caught a pass and then fumbled. The referee blew his whistle, but the Scituate player picked up the ball and continued on to score. Even though Hing- ham put the game under protest, the of- ficials awarded the victory to Scituate, based on the fact that we completed the game. This and a string of other losses came to a climax on Thanksgiving with a loss to Newton South. FIRST ROW: D. Thompson, S. Gill, R. McGuirk, R. Delaney, G. Piekarski, M. Shaughnessy, K. Grimm, W. The Pep Club, led by the cheerleaders, makes up the cheering section at games and rallies. Its many activities include poster-making, selling programs and shakers at games, decorating for rallies, and generally pro- moting school spirit. All these projects make the Pep Club a hidden factor leading to the success of all school sports. boys ' bcis VARSITY FIRST ROW: M. Cronin, J. Spencer, J. Kirby, W. Baldwin, J. Sheskey, D. Daly. SECOND ROW: G. Driscoll, R. Mitchell, Captain, F. Wendt, W. Garretson, N r. Barker, Coach. Not only is it impossible to make this year ' s Varsity record look impressive, but it is equally impossible to attribute this poor season to anything but a lack of height. Coach Barker, plagued by this height problem, built a small, fast team. However, the team just couldn ' t cope with its taller, higher scoring rivals. The only bright spots in the team ' s 2-16 record were two successive wins in non-league play— 53-43 over Scituate and 48-39 over Thayer. Unlike the Varsity, the Junior Varsity enjoyed a winning season, splitting games with Rockland, Scituate, Silver Lake, and Whitman-Hanson and defeating Hanover and Abington twice. Because of the large number of seniors on this year ' s varsity squad, many of the junior varsity players, most of whom were sophomores, will have an excellent chance of making next year ' s Varsity. This year the Drama Club presented the three-act play Arms and the Man, by G. B. Shaw, three one-act plays, Gianni Schicchi, Curse You, Jack Dalfon, and When You Marry the Navy, and the fes- tival play Thread of Song, presented in Massachusetts State Drama Festival competition in Franklin. The Harbor Light, published four times this year, strived to fulfill this goal on a smaller scale by keeping the students of this school informed about school activities and by pub- licizing events of general interest. As in other years, the problems of v rit- ing articles, setting up pages, and soliciting advertisements had to be overcome before the publication of each issue. Other duties performed by staff members included photog- raphy, art work, and selling the fin- ished newspaper. EDITORS SEATED: E. Edwards, E. Broydrick, S. Garland, Editor-in-Chief, E. Parker. Thus, a year- book is a tradition and, as a tradition, seemingly has to contain certain musts that have to remain whether they are of value or not. Consequently, a yearbook becomes stereotyped. In order to make the 1963 Highway more than a photo album, we have broken some traditions and destroyed some stereotypes. To carry out our goal would have been impossible without the diligent work of the business staff to insure the fi- nancial success of the Highway. BUSINESS STAFF SEATED: F. Taylor, S. Briggs, C. On the night of March thirteenth the hockey team met the basket- ball team in a wild game of basketball, after which the male members of the High School faculty, supported by students and female faculty members, battled with the teachers of South Junior High. A paper and bottle drive was held in April. On the Saturday be- fore Easter, the annual car wash was con- ducted by the senior class in the high school parking lot. A workday, a dance, and a food sale increased the funds in the class treasury. This year the student council participated in the interschool exchange program with Wellesley High School and was a member of the Southeastern Massachusetts Association of Student Councils. Lawson TO THE GRADUATES: As you read the pages of the 1963 HIGHWAY and recall many memories of your school years, it is well to remember Joyce Kilmer ' s famous words, . . . life is a high- way and its milestones are the years. You may be satisfied with the distance you have covered and with your rate of progress. Per- haps, however, you should pause at this junc- tion to see if you have taken advantage of all the benefits of the main road and the many side roads provided by your parents, teach- ers, and townspeople. There may be a need for a change in the rate, time, or distance of future travels. Your future and our future is in your hands. ■Congratulations and best wishes for con- ' tinued success. ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT Charles W. Lamontagne As you go forward in life to meet new challenges, may your success be measured by the worthiness of the basic principles and foundations which you have gained from your home and your school. Up to this point you have enjoyed the comparative anonymity and security of being high school students. This security of such a general classification will no longer be yours. Henceforth you will be evaluated as individuals. Your achievements will be open to scrutiny. Your success or fail- ure will be measured. All future success will depend on how well you utilize your education. My sister Cecaiia and I initiated my uncle into our club- clubbe pasa pessoas marauilhosas. Family, family, and more family. Of course, I was an astute scholar at Colegio Santa Doroteia. Another startling first— I had never piloted a plane be- fore. My six months in Sao Paulo, Brazil, were unfor- gettable. Arriving in time for the AAardi Gras, I was instantly captivated by the excitement, the Latin beat, and the warm-hearted Brazilian people. This carnival was our wildest holiday but many others followed. Just as with parties, there was no end to the eating. A seven course meal was typical and perhaps ac- counted for my added ten pounds, something my family never missed an opportunity to joke about. This joking seemed a part of the Brazilian personality. I ' ll never forget my Easter vacation at a camp in the West when we climbed a mountain for four and a half hours, or our international soccer team (I was Miss America), or the day I got completely lost in Sao Paulo. It was a great trip home, climaxed by my plane trip home, when I gained almost thirty hours flying time. 78 a.f.s. in hingham SOTIRIOS YOUROUKOS GUNNEL TROBECK RYOHEI ONUKI Under the sponsorship of the American Field Service, Hingham High School welcomed three foreign exchange students to its halls this year.
