Lawson, Superintendent; Philip Shute, Chairman; Charles W. Lamontagne, Assistant Superintendent; Edward Liewicki, George W. Pierce, Mary K. Hitchcock. The School Committee is an independent board of officers with extensive control over education. This committee has the power to make up the budget, determine how much the town will appropriate, ap- point teachers and administrative staff, and prescribe curriculum and courses of study. The Hersey House is the headquarters of our school administration. P.T.S.A. NIGHT During the autumn the Hingham High School Parent Teacher Student Association held its annual open house for parents. After a brief business meeting, Mr. Bartlett described the curriculum and the organiza- tion of a typical school day. Following the meeting the parents visited the various classrooms where each teacher explained his subject matter. During the evening the Student Council sold refreshments. ADMINIS ASSISTANT SUPERINTENDENT C. W. LAMONTAGNE Unfortunately for me, I have entered upon your public school education just at the time when you are preparing to leave it; however, may I wish you success as you go forward from the Hingham Schools. Possibly the follow- ing thought as expressed by a very wise and humble man, Ralph Waldo Emerson, will mean something beyond what I, a stranger, can convey: Shall I tell you the secret of a true scholar? It is this: Every man I meet is my master in some point, and in that I learn of him. SUPERINTENDENT DR. JOHN H. LAWSON To the 1962 Hingham High School Graduates The aim of education should be to con- vert the mind into a living fountain, and not a reservoir. — John M. Mason As you leave Hingham High School and start in a new field of endeavor, success will abound if you can follow the advice of John Mason as you put into practice the training received from your parents, teachers, and clergy. My warm congratulations and best wishes are extended to each of you. fRATION OUR FORMER PRINCIPAL ARNOLD W. BARTLETT The context of Mr. Bartlett ' s farewell speech to the student body was quoted from Fyodor Dostoyevsky ' s The Brothers Kar- amazov: People always talk to you a great deal about your education, but some good sacred memory, preserved from childhood, is perhaps the best education . . . for that one memory may keep us from great evil . . . Let us be, first and above all, kind, then honest, and then let us never forget each other. ■i iliSBii M f i (. w t «t p I MUM iSiiiii ' fiSiiii «ijri OUR ACTING PRINCIPAL J. PRESTON BARRY Be not disillusioned by the skeptics of our times. Success and failure are not mere accidents as some would have us be- lieve but rather they are pure justice. Despite injuries to several key personnel, the Harbormen broke even with a 4-4-1 record. Head Coach Walter Anderson along with Line Coach Buckley and Backfield Coach Vafidies worked hard with the boys to prepare for a difficult schedule. The team started the year off with a pre- season victory over Whitman-Hanson in the Jamboree. Following a tough defeat at the hands of an improved Danvers club, the Harbormen came back strong to win three straight and tie a fourth. During this first part of the season, quarterback Don Mclntyre. fullback Fran Coleman, tackle Ray Norton and guard Pbil Howlett all suf- fered injuries. The loss of these start- ers, plus a difficult second half schedule produced two more defeats before an impressive victory over North Quincy. In the Thanksgiving Day finale Hing- ham battled the wet, the cold, and a strong Newton South team, but could not come up with a win. Throughout the season several boys turned in con- sistently impressive performances, among them Jim MacAllen, Don De- Hart, Leroy Deabler. Doug Eaton and John Allen. At the close of the season the team elected John Allen captain of next year ' s team. 3fci zoJ FIRST ROW: M. Cronin, R. Calvi, R. Delaney, G. Piekarski, J. Gratia, J. Shutt, F. Wendt, J. Cronin, R. The Co-Heads, Jane Walgreen and Linda Lazzerini, and the Leader Leslie Jope, did an excellent job of leading the other girls in their march- ing and twirling. They never failed to add to the people ' s enjoyment of half time at the football games. The Majorettes also aroused school spirit by sponsoring a dance and selling beanies, decals and various other souvenirs to the student body. The Cheerleaders and the Pep Club worked together during the fall to plan football rallies held in the gymnasium. Decorations in- cluded colorful murals, signs, and a paper hoop through which the team jumped. The Halloween rally, which took place at night, was well supported by the parents who had to cheer in a competitive 22 Oh when the Saints, go marchin ' in . The two most outstanding games of the season were with Marshfield and Swampscott. For the first time in sixteen years, with a score of 2-0, the Harbormaids downed the undefeated South Shore League Champions, Marshfield. A hard-fighting Swamp- scott team, the North Shore Champions, defeated Hingham 2-1. The two adept co-captains. Gale Palmer and Julie Holm contributed the most to the success of the team. Some of these activities included a Bermuda Day to raise money for new band uniforms, a concession stand at the first P.T.S.A. meeting to raise money for the scholarship fund, the establishment of a Marshal Board, new and better assemblies, and a Tag Day at the Hingham Wellesley football game, the proceeds of which were donated to WGBH TV. On October 7, 1961, the Student Council sponsored a dance, the Hobo Hop, which was one of the most profitable dances ever held at H.H.S. The girls ' basketball team this winter ended the season with a 9-3 record. The season was marked by close, ex- citing, and often times rough games, fast and tricky layups by high scorer Gale Palmer, and excellent board work by guard Anne Wing. Not until Hingham met a fast and energetic Braintree team did the six senior start- ers suffer any upsets. In a game with Whitman-Hanson another loss ensued due to the absence of two starting guards and carelessness on the forward side. In a final match against Thayer, Hingham fell behind in the fourth quarter to lose by just four points. The team spirit was often aroused by colorful posters and raucous yells in the team room, and, for the first time, each practice was preceded by vigorous calisthenics led by tri-captains Anne Wing, Linda Gustafson and Pam Barry, and all the senior players. Residing in a rural area enabled him to learn much about the Finnish people and their way of life. Entering the high school as sophomores the Class of 1962 had no officers or organization, but through hard work and cooperatioii a number of projects were successfully undertaken. During the senior year the executive board, headed by the class officers, added to its already stable treasury with the proceeds from the annual Snowball Dance, a very suc- cessful food sale, and a basketball game between the junior high and high school faculties and between the basketball and hockey tearns. In addition, the officers devised a new election process to aid future classes and opened board meetings to all interested. In three short years at the high school the contributions of its members has made the v.lass of 62 an outstanding class. 63 SENIOR THREE YEAR HONOR ROLL SEATED: M. Killam, S. Hellier, M. Hawkes, W. The business staff, under the direction of Miss Quill, spent a busy first half year ac- cumulating sponsors, patrons, and patron- esses, taking subscriptions and preparing advertisement layouts. While they handled such business matters, the literary staff was fully occupied putting the yearbook itself together with the help of Miss Suzedell, our advisor, and our photographer, Mr. Wayne. It is with great appreciation that all concerned thank Miss Quill, Miss Suze- dell, Mr. Wayne, the faculty and adminis- tration for their cooperation, and Mrs. John S.
