HINGHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY Your Community Resource Center o«=- Ofs- JOHN SAMUELSON Because you live in a land of freedom and opportunity, your whole life should speak forth with thankfulness. Live honest- ly and use wisely whatever talents you have been given. Happiness and success come to those who do the best they can, no matter how small or large the task. John A. Redmond iiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiilimiiiiiiiimi Message to the Seniors The time has come to say good-by to the security and protection that your youth has of- fered you, and to step through the portals into the adult world. You should not be afraid because you are pre- pared. Your teachers have placed in your hands the implements of learning, and encouraged and guided you to use these tools wisely. You have been prepared by the devotion of your parents who have given you sound minds and healthy bodies, high ideals and moral righteous- ness, plus the spiritual foundation that has mold- ed your characters and will inspire your success. To each and everyone of you, my best wishes for happiness and success in your chosen career. I. D. READE Superintendent of Schools iiiilim ■MlliiiiMiilii ttU •iitiiwitiiiiiiinii ■i«iU iMM DEDICATION. To William Richard Cronin, Teacher, Coach, and Friend, we dedi- cate thi ' s book of schoolday memories. . . His life was gentle, and the elements So mixed in him that Nature might stand up And say to all the world ' This was a man! ' Mr. Cronin was responsible for organizing the South Shore League in 1949 and was instrumental in moving the league to Boston Arena in 1952. His teams reached their peak in the 1955-56 season when the team was crowned co-champions of the league and were semi-finalists in the State Tournament. CO-EDITORS Left to right: Dorothy Jermyn, Sandra Owens, Constance Cronin. We, the editors, sincerely hope that this 1957 edition of the Hingham Highway will become one of your most cherished possessions in the years to come and on many occasions will be the stimulus to relive happy memoirs and renew unforgettable friendships of our high school days. We are most thankful for these four years and to all who made these memories possible. YEARBOOK STAFF Standing, left to right: L. Bazinet, J. Halliday, E. Cronin, S. Kelleher, M. Leahy, Stoddard, C. From my childhood, I loved to go to concerts with my parents. I remem- ber although I could not understand lOusic, I liked the atmosphere— everything v ' as quiet except, those attractive sounds from different instruments. For my future, I have chosen the vocation of teach- ing. Sorhetimes people say that teaching is common- place. It may not be a great business. Still I believe teaching human beings is sublime work, which I love. Now, thanks to hundreds of people, I am having the most wonderful experience in America. I am deeply impressed with many new people who have been very nice and kind to me. I cannot believe any dreadful war among such wonderful people. So I firmly believe that we youngsters who will make up the next generation can maintain the peace all over the world. I was born on a cold winter morning, December 8. I have been brought up as one of my parents ' four daughters, happily, but rather strictly. I was an ex- tremely active and spirited girl until I entered the private mis- sion school, Kaisei Girls ' School from the public school. This great change affected me, especially mentally. I got certain faith as the guide of my spirit. A DAY AT HINGHAM HIGH MRS. ORCUTT MR. READE MR. CARNES MRS. HENNINGSEN MISS DORRITY MRS. DALEY MR. H. S JOYCE BERRY BOB TRACY CLASS HISTORY When we entered Hingham High School as freshmen, everything was out of proportion — nnuch too big. Now that we are about to graduate, all the material things around us seem to have shrunk, but, in reality, we have grown— physically and mentally, we hope. We are not perfect, but at least we have improved. The past four years were filled with successes, defeats, and loads of fun. We can look back at these things and smile at them now. Some of them seem so unimportant and childish, but their memory we do not want to lose. The first class function to which we were invited was a welcome buffet supper spon- sored by the sophomores (class of ' 56). President Bill Baldwin, Vice President Dominic Galluzzo, Secretary Diana Hurley, Treasurer Eddie Rose, and the executive board voted to reciprocate with a square dance for the two classes. Later, in June of 1954, the class picnic at Duxbury Beach was enjoyed by everyone. Mrs. Soper and Mr. Ricci helped the class struggle through the sophomore year in a brand new building. Loraine Bazinet, Nancy Elmore, Mary Gent, Alice Jacobs, Lois Mc- Monagle, Pat Perrier, Justine Ripley, and Diane Stoddard were chosen to twirl batons on the majorette squad. Chief hoboes at this year ' s money-making scheme, the Hobo Hop, were the class officers: Sue Jenner, President; Rick Baldwin, Vice President; Betty Faria, Secretary; and Dave Berman, Treasurer. Two clubs were formed this year— the Science Club with Mike Zerner elected president, and the Math Club with many of our classmates as members. The new cheerleaders, selected by the school from girls in our class, were Jean Bates, Marge Biddle, Paula Butcher, Pat Calvi, and Judy Means, in June, in spite of some objections to the horseshoe crabs, we returned to Duxbury. There was much to do in the junior year, and there seemed a lot less time in which to do it. Bill Baldwin and Betty Faria were re-elected to their old class offices along with Joyce Berry, Vice President , and Bob Tracy, Chancellor of the Exchequer. At the end of the football season, members of the team elected Dave Berman and Terry Galo co-captains for the next year. Stardust was chosen the theme of our junior prom. The gym was difficult to recognize, decorated in silver and blue, when Fred Ayers and Betty Faria were crowned king and queen. In the spring Lew Nierman broke both the South Shore and state records for the high school javelin throw, and our faithful treasurer, Bob Tracy, received the coveted Harvard book. Then more of our classmates became leaders in school activities: Eddie Goldman and Bob Tracy, co-captains of the basketball squad; Margo Biddle, captain of the cheerleaders; Nancy Elmore and Diane Stoddard, co-leaders of the majorettes. Bill Cronin and Lew Nierman were chosen by the entire student body to serve as president and vice president of the Student Council. When school closed for t he year, Jerry Fogel, Dick Morrill, and Bill Pratt attended Boys ' State; Dotty Jermyn went to Girls ' State. Bill Baldwin and Joyce Berry were the first from H.H.S. to travel to Europe on the American Field Service summer student-exchange program. Mr. Magnuson and ' Miss Zammitti, with the class officers, Bill Baldwin, Sue Jenner, Betty Faria, and Mike Zerner, led us through the senior year, when the class was busier than ever. Mako Hibi, our charming Japanese student, was a special treat for us. In the fall the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award was presented to Dotty Jermyn, president of the National Honor Society. A few weeks later a school newspaper, the Harbor Light, was started at H.H.S. with Jerry Fogel as editor-in-chief. Bill Baldwin was named a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship program, the first candidate in Hingham. In March Dominic Galluzzo went to the State House as our Student Government Day Representative. April saw ten seniors, Abi Allen, Rick Baldwin, Dave Berman, Connie Cronin, Gail Eaton, Judy Eggleston, Bob Fahey, B ' hll Pratt, Diane Stoddard, and Sibley Wright, traveling on a student- exchange trip to Westmount, Canada, with their advisor, Miss Butterfield. WE are seniors and about to tackle a small chunk of life. Something of ourselves will remain behind at H.H.S., but we do not begrudge this to such a wonderful school. We are glad that we spent our four years at the Hingham High School.
