Mr. Redmond has won the re- spect and acclaim of each student of Hingham High School, because of his devotion to our interests. He has always listened to our suggestions and whenever possible, has incorporated those suggestions in our pro- gram. In times of discouragement, Mr. Redmond has been our stalwart bulwark; in our moments of success, he has been the first to offer con- gratulations. Whatever success we may attain in the future will be due in no small way to the efforts of our friend and counselor, John A. Redmond. THE CLASS OF ' 54 JOHN B. CHAFFEE Superintendent We, the Class of 1954, wish to express our thanks to Mr. Chaffee, our superintendent and the school committee for all they have done for us during our school career. When in time of trouble or despair, Thoughts will travel back into the past And grasp the remnants of these last golden hours, Each moment will through fleeting time Become a precious monument. Ears will hunger for familiar sounds And eyes will thirst for those inspiring sights Which years and time have dimmed. If only once again our feet Could tread those time-worn halls. Now the last bell draws near, Soon trembling hands will grasp The last remaining mooring. Our ship will sail upon a course Which we hare daily charted. Many times our tiny craft will toss before the storm, But hands must firmly grip the wheel And keep the bow straight on the course Which time has plotted. At times we ' ll turn our heads Wishing that we could bring the ship about, And sail back to that distant port Which years have left behind. Then eyes will moisten while a tiny smile VTill play about the mouth. As thoughts turn back the dusty leaves of time. Hands must tightly grasp the building tools of life. Each moment can be imagined as a brick Which when laid in place, can never be removed; But now as the triumphant moment nears. Our eyes must turn ahead The path of life has now become a road Thick with strangling weeds. Let not your feet become entangled. Walk on, and then some day look back Upon that moment when the trembling hand Cast loose the mooring line. JOHN PEABODY RICHARDSON JifeL J ' J p b. 7 o €0% o un M ? ' uptcon. President D. ( f (4ton By PAT HARRIS and SHERRY HILLIARD September 6, 1950 arrived and we, the class of ' 54 found ourselves entering the portals of Hingham High for the first time. At first we felt like a ship, lost at sea, but soon we found our course and settled down for four glorious years. Time for elections came and Ken Hubbart was elected president by an overwhelming majority. Assisting him was Charlie Lersch, followed by Pat Harris to keep the records straight and Dick to bank all our money. Graduation seemed years away, but we didn ' t care. We were having too much fun. Janet Scully, Rosanna Murphy, Pauline Cappella, Beth Johnson and Pat Harris became regulars on the smart new majorette squad. We put on a Christmas Assembly under the direction of Mrs. Ruth Soper. Frosh boys who became reserves on the varsity football team were Ken Hubbart, Gerry Ruggles and Wayne Young. Those receiving varsity letters for the girls were Babs Nash, Nancy Decker and Margot Olson. The Sophomores gave us a Sock Dance in the gym and in return we gave them a square dance that went over with a bang. As our second year began, our ship seemed to be sailing fast with Ted Hunter as skipper, Virginia Esau, first mate, Pat Harris, log keeper, and Babs Nash, purser. We welcomed in the freshmen with a square dance. There was an event of importance when our class advisor. Miss Ruth Lovell, became Mrs. Ruth Soper. We found it quite hard to refrain from calling her by her maiden name. Ken Hubbart, Phil Housman, Wayne Young and Ray Townsend shared the spotlight on the football field while our Soph girls were right behind them with honors in basketball and Softball. Toward the end of our second year, we found our Soph girls trying out for cheerleaders. Those elected were Betty Bardsley, Kay Kearns, Lou Leary, Barb Spencer and Sherry Hilliard. We finished the ' year with a party at Duxbury Beach. Remember Mr. Ricci ' s flashy swim trunks? How could you forget ! Well, we returned to H.H.S. in the fall, with beautiful tans and a feeling of superiority. At last we were upper classmen ! Now we could scorn the freshmen, tolerate the sophomores and be treated with consideration by the seniors — what a feeling ! Joe Martino, Ken Hubbart, Sherry Hilliard and John Elmore guided our ship through the third quarter of its journey. The football team was great with some of our boys to help them win. When basketball season approached, we found three of our boys in there shooting the way to the championship. Spring came and we as Juniors attempted our first big project, the Junior Prom. Through a big storm, we fought our way to Hull Memorial School to make it a big success. The event of the evening was the crowning of our pretty queen, Joan Chaplin, who was kept from fainting by her attendants, Rosanna Murphy, Mary Jane Barbuto, Mary Cotter, Eileen Burke, Bunny Sealund, Barbara Spencer, and Sherry Hilliard. In June, Julie Harris was selected to attend Girls ' State and John Templeton, Joe Martino, Ted Hunter and Ken Hubbart went to Boys ' State. Ken was elected Governor and later in the summer he went to Washington to attend Boys ' Nation. Congratulations Ken! Our Junior year came to an end to find many of us collecting a good burn on the sands of Nantasket Beach. With the crisp autumn air and the turning of the leaves, our illustrious class once again entered dear old Hingham High. Somehow, things were different. We were mighty Seniors ! We thought back on the time that we were Freshmen and how we stared at the Seniors, who to us, seemed old. Right through our Junior year we had always held sort of an awe toward Seniors but now we were Boss. To lead us down the last mile, we elected Joe Martino, Charlie Lersch, Sherry Hilliard and Ronnie Downer as officers. Ken Hubbart and Bruce Waugh kept the business of the school up to date, as President and Veep of the Student Council. Football season was with us again with Ken and Phil leading the squad as co-captains. The team enjoyed a successful season. They were cheered on to victory by our peppy cheerleaders, Lou Leary, Barb Spencer, Kay Kearns, Sherry Hilliard and Captain Betty Mighty Mouse Bardsley. During the half, the spotlight turned on Beth and Pat as they led the band and majorettes down the field. Other seniors who had made the squad were Carol Melanson, Connie Shaw, Ginny Davis, Katy Powers, Joan Barilaro, Janet Rice, and Bunny Sealund. The girls ' field hockey team, captained by Babs Nash and Huck Murray, won the Hockamock League championship. The varsity H-Club sponsored the Harborman ' s Hop and also a Hobo Dance. Each was a success. Congratulations Jacket Club ! Basketball season found Ken and Charlie as co-captains of a very capable team. We were able to gain win after win with the noble aid of Tom Burr, Charlie Harris, Joe Martino and Jim Gillen. The Marshal Board ably captained by Phil Housman kept everyone in line. Dick Kelley and Joe Martino shared the problems of the Social Committee and did well. Something new was added this year. Under the direction of Mr. Redmond and co-chairmen Paul Calvi and Babs Nash, we had a New Year ' s Ball. The decorations were fabulous and every- one helped to make it a huge success. We were proud to send Wayne Young to represent H.H.S. in Good Government Day. Sherry Hilliard received the D.A.R., Good Citizenship Award, given to an- outstanding senior girl. Pat Foster was president of the Dramatic Club. Under the direction of Miss Evelyn Brega and Mr. Phillip Swanson, the club presented a three-act play called We Shook the Family Tree. Now we have come to the end of our voyage, having spent four wonderful years in H.H.S. We have had the pleasure of many friendships with students and teachers. Many of us feel sorry that we will not have the pleasure of attending the new high school, but we are honored to be the last class to graduate from dear, old Hingham High School. k 4 .4 ■ ' J I ' V JUNIOR PROM - .4 • •, • • ' • . • 1  -w l -. The Hingham eleven was defeated by a powerful North Quincy squad by a score of 32-6. The following week Hingham eked out a 6-0 victory over a stubborn Canton team. The Green Wave of Abington next fell victim to Hingham by a score of 9-7. October 17, marked the turning point of Hingham ' s football season. On that day we were defeated by a powerful Braintree team, after a gallant effort by a score of 18-12. However, the team improved greatly after this game and went the rest of the season without suffering another defeat. During this period, we defeated Wellesley 18-6, Plymouth 27-0, and played a 13-13 tie with Enfield, Connecticut. On Thanksgiving Day, we defeated Rockland in a spectacular game by a score of 25-20. The season ' s record was five wins and two losses and one tie. Abington and Whitman fell under our hoof but we in turn were jumped on by Plymouth. With five games left we defeated three teams — Rockland, Middleboro and Abington — and lost to Wareham and Whitman. The highest score made by Hingham was 93, as opposed to Middleboro ' s score of 62. Among the heart-breakers were the one point loss to Whitman and the three point loss to Wareham. Hingham had a good season, losing five out of thirteen games. i I JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL First row, left to right: W. Lincoln, D. Briggs, J. Bancroft, F. Ward, J. Halliday, H. Arkell, P. Payne. BOYS ' TENNIS Last year ' s tennis team cjid a splendid job of winning all of the six games they played. Because of this, they were undefeated champs of the South Shore League. The team consisted of: Paul Vonckx, Alden Briggs, David Leahy, Alex Horniman, Peter Sterling, Ted Hunter, and Edward Doherty. The leadership of the team was in the capable hands of Peter Sterling and Edward Doherty with Mr. Swanson as Coach. ICE HOCKEY TEAM First row, left to right: J. Ashworth, R. Worrick, P. Housman, W. This was the first year that our hockey team has played its entire games at the Boston Arena in the South Shore League. With one year ' s experience behind them, next year at the arena ought to show even greater improvement. This year four members of the squad were chosen to play on the South Shore Hockey All- Stars. They were: Jimmy Kehoe, Billy Doyle, Pete McKee, and Jimmy Doyle. We hope that next year even more will be chosen. I VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY First row, left to right: J. Schofield, A. Magner, P. SCORES The 1953 hockey team did a good job by winning eight of their sixteen games, they lost three games and tied three. The Junior Varsity didn ' t do as well as the Varsity team but they are improving. They won three, lost three, and tied four. The Girls ' Softball team of 1953 also did a terrific job because they won all of the ten games which they played. They also won much popularity for their team and Hingham High School by being named the champs of the Hockmock League. The Basketball team, although a good team, has much room for improvement. They had 8 losses, and 4 wins. R. Ryan J. Phillips R. Murray J. Linscott D. Cochrane M. Sealund P. Houseman C. Lersh A. Hornoman G. Sharkey J. Greenberg J. Beck P. Jenner P. Foster D. Kelley L. Savoy I Gu€ss Who? 5 €i TOM cutd ' ye tcuKCHt By Virginia Esau We, the Class of 1954, having within our grasp the pinnacle of achievement, graduation from Hingham High, and being collectively of one sound mind and many sound bodies do here and now draw up our last will and testament. After having spent four years within this great structure of superior education, we have accepted the teachings as no other illiterate class had done before us. Every under-classman who finds his name on this list has the realization of every dream, to be a beneficiary in the will of the Class of 1954. We bequeath the following: To Mr. John Redmond, we leave the verification of good results from his loving leadership and his influence on the youth of Hingham. To Mr. John Carnes, we give thanks for his guidance and help during his ficst year as assistant principal. To the Class of 1955, we leave the prestige and responsibility that goes with the title of Senior. We leave to the Class of 1956, a free photograph of any Senior for their scrapbook of stars and heroes. We leave the Class of 1957 a giant bottle of vitamins to bolster them on their road to graduation. Kenny Hubbart leaves his many achievements and honors to any Junior with the superhuman strength to bear them. Joe Martino leaves his brain to the American Medical Association. Joan Barilaro bequeaths her vocal cords to any one with the style and personality to make the best use of them. Pat Harris and Beth Johnson leave their uniforms, whistles, routines, and hard labor to Marilyn Scully and Frannie Perry. Julia Harris and Paul Calvi leave their laughs to anyone with the enthusiasm and wind to execute them. Janet Scully bequeaths her golden strands to anyone with the time and patience to take care of them. Tommy Burr leaves sure shots (for the basket) to David Muncy. Tony Messina leaves his pizzas to Bill Macri. Rosanna Murphy, Virginia Esau and Joe Fee leave Baker ' s ! Barbara Spencer leaves her secretarial reports to anyone who is able to do the work. Barbara Nash leaves her athletic ability to Gail Stevenson. Ronnie Downer leaves his golden trumpet to Gabriel, no one else could handle those notes. Pat Foster bequeaths her acting to Helen Hayes ! Howie Foster leaves his love for Brockton to Nita Rosenblum. Betty Bardsley leaves her cheerleading captaincy, bus lists and tickets . . . Mary Cotter leaves her art ability to Elaine Kessel. The kids down the Harbor leave their mud flats, clams, and forks to the muscle men of the Junior Class. Sherry Hilliard bequeaths all her odd jobs to Joan Henningsen. Masy Jane Barbuto, Joan Chaplin, and Pat Harris leave the hours of work on the yearbook to Phyllis Benjamin, Barbara Brady, and Carolyne Whyte.
