Redmond for the four full years of our high school career, dedicate our yearbook to him, our beloved principal. Whenever we, who now leave the familiar halls of Hingham High, look back to our high school days, Mr. RecTmond will be foremost in our thoughts; as the man who so quickly gained our respect and admiration, and who always will be thought of as a friend and ad- visor to all. To you, Mr. Redmond, we give our sincere thanks and appreciation for the friendly inter- est you have shown in all of us — and in all of our activities. May your stay in Hingham be a long and happy one. Magnuson as executor of this will, and since Mr. Magnuson is skilled not only in executing wills, but extracting tardy athletic equipment, we feel that these requests will be earnestly and faithfully carried out. First — We bequeath to our successors, the Class of 1954, the great honor and dignity which is an attribute of the Senior Class. Second — We bestow to same successors, all momentary visions of excellent marks, all nightmares and tortures brought on by failures, term tests, and college board exams. Third — We compound and bequeath to all unfortunate students our autographic ex- pertness in signing notes, excuses, and report cards. Fourth — We beneficiently donate from financial profits derived from our social activi- ties, the following needed accessories: 1. — An elevator substantially reinforced to transport 1st floor inhabitants to the 4th throughout the day. 2. — An adequate amount of T. N. T. to gently open lockers when all other methods have failed. 3. — One pencil sharpener for all rooms. 4. — All-scholastic teams for each sport. Fifth — To the midget freshmen, we gratefully donate the upper book shelves in the lockers, which we are now accustomed to, although a ladder had once been necessary. Sixth — To Mr. Redmond we leave many, many thanks for just being himself and the principal whom we all respect and admire. Seventh — Lyn, Bev, Butch, and Kay leave an extra supply of ' enthusiasm for the football and basketball games of next year, and also a supply of patience for planning all the rallies and settling the bus situation, to the Juniors and newcomers. Eighth — Digger and Joanie leave their uniforms and boots to anyone who can fill them. Ninth — Carole and Bev leave the work on future yearbooks . . . PERIOD! Tenth— To Kenny Hubbart and Sherry Milliard, Florence and Foster leave their going- steady ways. Realizing that we quickly approach the end, we ask on this day in June in the year of Our Lord, one thousand nine hundred and f fty-three, at the Hingham High School in Hingham, Massachusetts, that these directions be executed immediately and with the greatest skill. With nervous torch, we blaze this, our most famous signature, THE CLASS OF 1953 Witnessed ivith unbound pleasure by The Faculty A Freshman, (It) Ourselves ACTIYITI E ve v W Kl ' l S cv- vjt ART CLUJ oOTE ' A ' - ' ■ft U, Tl • le .p ' OtA- 9- C«ffcr SENIOR EXECUTIVE BOARD First row, left to right: R. CLASS HISTORY By Betty Anderson and Peggy Ayers Early in September, 1949, a befuddled group assembled before the portals of H.H.S. We, the entering freshman class, were viewed with suspicion by the upperclassmen, horror by the faculty, and sympathetic understanding( ?) by the sophomores. However, we soon forgot our fears of teachers and the Marshal Board, and were represented by various members of the class in many school activities. We elected Angelo, Sweeney, Kay Sullivan, and Jack Lynch to guide our ship of state through its first year on the sea of knowledge. When football got underway, Jack Lynch and Sweeney made a name for themselves as gridiron standouts. Bob Thomas and Skippy ' Urbati showed much promise on the basketball courj:, while Gene Smith won several awards for his prowess on the track. When Softball season rolled around, Marion Biddle, Betty Catrambone and Anna Papa- sadero gained fame as the only freshmen members of the varsity team. After the sophs treated us to a Hobo Dance we returned their kindness by inviting them to a social held in the gym. At this affair, certain members of the class established them- selves as lives of the party. The advisors who helped us through our first year at H.H.S. were Miss Ruth Poole and Mr. John Samuelson. We started our sophomore year with a bang by electing Sweeney , Pres.; Angelo, Vice Pres.; Beth Bigelow, Sec; and Dick Spratley, Treasurer. Mr. Theodore Ricci and Mr. Richard Woodward guided our able Executive Board in its many activities. We, enter- prising sophomores, condescended to invite the Frosh to the outstanding dance of the H.H.S. social season. As a new floor had just been put in the gym, a sock dance was held, with prizes awarded for the most artistically decorated socks. Arthur Hornstra and Foster Webb became regulars on the varsity football team, while Florence Brouillard starred in the Dramatic Club ' s production of Love and How to Cure It. Ruth Loring, Carole Butcher, Diane Barry, Peggy Ayers,- Carol Fardig, and Marion Biddle took the Civil Service test and became active members of the Senior Marshal Board. When tryouts for cheerleading positions were held, Bev Doherty, Carole Butcher, Kay Blowers, Anne Gallagher, and Lyn Chaffee were elected. It wasn ' t long before we reached the halfway mark. Yes, we were juniors; and how proud we were not to be regarded as underclassmen! This year, Sweeney, our Chief •Executive, was assisted by Bev Doherty. Rosie Capparotta kept the notes, while Anna Papasadero tried to keep our budget straight. Football arrived again, and we found our class gridiron heroes still holding their own. We had a good basketball season with Skippy Urbati as a real standout. We cannot forget that thrilling spook basketball game sponsored by the Varsity H Club. Remember the Junior Prom? Joan Sestito was the pretty Junior Queen. Yes, that night was certainly one to remember. After all. it was the first prom we ,as Juniors, had ever attempted, and we were proud. At Easter, we decided that we needed money for our treasury. Thanks to Pat Guinessey and her mother, we staged a successful fashion show. We were terrific models, weren ' t we, girls? Our many thank s to Ann Bruce, the narrator, and Leo Dauphinais, for with- out him we would have been in darkness. Remember the spring talent show? The Flappers will go down in history as H.H.S. ' s own chorus line. In June, Girls ' State and Boys ' State beckoned. Peggy Ayers and Betty Anderson were invited to Girls ' State, while Roy Smith, Gene Smith, Richmond Donaldson, and Fred Kaemphe attended Boys ' State. Angelo Zona and Gene Smith were elected president and vice president, respectively, of the Student Council. Our Junior year came to a close, and we said Hasta La Vista to old H.H.S. until the next year. As tne trees in fiont of H.H.S. turned to red and gold, our renowned class returned as mighty seniors. Each a little older, a little wiser, and much smarter. When class elec- tions were held, we elected Camillo Sweeney Spirito, Valerie Gilbert, Betty Anderson, and Roy Smith to guide us through eur last year. Pauline Hunter did an excellent job as president of the French Club. The play, The Pampered Darling, under the direction of Miss Brega, was the best yet. Our attentions soon turned once again to the gridiron, and we were proud to find Carol Fardig and Joan Sestito in the limelight as head drum majorettes. Let us never forget the highlight of our football season ... the Enfield, Conn. game. This event showed the warm hospitality of the Enfield people ... the football players can vouch for that. It was a most unusual day enjoyed by all. Our twelve senior football players played a successful season, as Captain Jack Lynch lived up to his reputation as a great ball carrier. The Turkey Day Game was a thriller for all. Our senior boys really played their hearts out to win their last schoolboy game, and came through with flying colors and a score of 21-6, over the traditional rival, Rock- land. They were cheered to victory by our peppy cheerleaders, captained by Lyn Chaffee. The Field Hockey team, captained by Marion Biddle, had a successful season this year, and the Hockey Banquet will long be remembered. We must not forget the Harborman ' s Hop, sponsored by the Varsity H Club. Con- gratulations to the Jacket Committee. The decorations resulted from the creative genius of E.J. Hamann and Bev. Doherty, assisted by Florence Brouillard, Marion Biddle, Peggy Ayers, Dotty Goodman, Betty Anderson, Margie Miller, and others. The Ice Hockey Team cannot be forgotten with Fred Fahnley, the senior boy in the spotlight. Gene Smith ably captained the Senior Marshal Bo rd, while Pete Sterling, as presi- dent of the Teen Can Committee, conducted many a happy evening at Agricultural Hall. We, at Hingham, were proud to have Nancy Bush represent Hingham High School in Good Government Day. Congratuations to you too, Marion Biddle, for receiving the D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award, awarded to an outstanding seionr girl. As years pass, the memory of our four happy years at H.H.S. will linger. We look back as we leave you with this thought in mind, Remember well these years, for they are the best years of your life. Hingham Memories By Peter Sterling In old Hingham, land of beauty, ' Neath the skies so clear, Sheltered is its proudest treasure, Alma Mater dear. We thy students will be loyal; For thy glory jight; Always keep thy name untarnished And thine honor bright. High school moments gone forever End these happy days, Now the call of life and duty Sends us on our ways. Yet our thoughts will, oft returning, Make us think until We shall see those happy moments Pass before us still.
