Foltz Oh the road is wide And the road is long And some will be weak And some will be strong But travel we must And no returning. But there ' ll come a day The road will divide Here a mountain path There a highway wide And so we must choose And no returning. Oh some will climb up The tortuous way And some will plod down ' Long the broad highway But journey we must And no returning. And some will borrow And others will lend And some will linger To lift up a friend But onward we press And no returning. See those dancing feet So blythe and so gay Not a mark they leave As they go their way Yet they gaily pass And no returning. Those resolute steps So firm and so strong Leave a well marked path As they move along As forward they go And no returning. And each in his way Is striving to find The goal of his heart And his peace of mind At the journey ' s end And no returning. v a — ra I ! Housman After hard weeks of practice the 1951 Big Red football squad gave promising outlooks to their coach, Art Radvilas , and assistant coaches, Press Barry, and Ernie Dorr. Although the Harbormen were handicapped somewhat by the lack of size they managed to balance this by their speed. The opening game was all that it was expected to be, a hard fought bat- tle, but Hingham bowed to Winthrop in a 20-6 defeat. Despite the loss things looked bright. It appeared that Hingham had finally shaken off the injury jinx of the past two seasons. This did not hold true for long, as the Harbormen soon lost the services of Eddie Callahan for several weeks, to top the list of injuries. The second game followed the same pattern as the first, and Hing- ham again tasted defeat by North Quincy ' s 7-0 victory. The list of injuries increased more as the season progressed--Jimmy Jenkins, Camillo Spirito, Ken Hubbart, Henry Kelly, Frank Allegra and Dick Wylie were sidelined at intervals. After the first two games Lady Luck changed her course as Hing- ham won over Abington 13-0. On a Columbus Day encounter Braintree de- feated Hingham 27-13. The next four games showed what the Harbormen were really capable of doing as they won over in succession; Wellesley, Plymouth, Whitman, and Randolph. The season was brought to a close by the Thanksgiving Day game in which this year issued forth a new holiday rivalry between Hingham and Rock- land. This was a close, thrilling, terrific but heartbreaking loss as the Har- bormen were overcome in the last few minutes of play to suffer a 26-20 de- feat. The main factor in this last game was the spirit displayed by all the boys on the squad. With this game the 1951 football season was concluded and the high school football career came to an end for Co-Captains Dick Shannon and Frank Allegra, as well as for Jimmy Jenkins, Eddie Callahan, Henry Kelly, Don Baltucci, Leo Mack and Dick Wylie. Throughout the season Foster Webb, Jack Lynch, Bob Thomas, Gene Smith, Dick Kehoe, Phil Houseman, Art Hornstra, Wayne Young, and Charlie Lersch gave outstanding performances, giving the Hingham High football pic- ture a bright hue for promising results in 1952. The start of the season gave hopes of a Hingham basketball team going to the Tech Tourney; but these hopes were shattered as the season neared its close and showed a record of 9 wins out of 14 games, placing Hingham in 4th place in the Old Colony League. The active players, Jack Lynch, Bob Thomas, Skippy Urbati, Bill Fibkins, Jimmy Jenkins, and Paul Sargeant played what proved to be an excit- ing series of games this season. The Junior Varsity teamed promising future basketball players who came up this year with an undefeated season. It looks as if Hingham will have no worries in the future in regard to a good basket- ball team. JUNIOR VARSITY BASKETBALL 1st row L to R: R. Kelley, T. Burr, S. Olsen, J. Zona, J. Gillen, J. MacLachlan FIELD HOCKEY A spirited and enthusiastic group of girls composed the 1951 Field Hockey Team. Although the record stands with 2 wins, 2 ties, and 9 losses, the girls never lost enthusiasm and gave the teams good opposition. The team was coached by Miss Marion Stallwood and captained by Mary Fraser. The opening game was played with Foxboro on a wet and muddy field. The girls were able to hold Foxboro to a 1-1 tie. The next three games were with Canton, Braintree, and North Easton, who were victorious over our girls. In the next two games Hingham defeated Randolph 5-0, and also were victori- ous over Braintree 2-0. The next exciting game was with Walpole, the cham- pions of the Hockamock League. Hingham played good hockey and tied Wal- pole 1-1. In the following games our girls were defeated by Canton, Hanover, Walpole, and Scituate. With the experience that the underclassmen gained this year, there is good material for next years team. f Jfin Ao JUNIOR VARSITY FIELD HOCKEY 1st row L to R: G.Stevenson, K. Martin, N. Maynard, J.
