JC ' SON t HINGHAM PUBLIC LIBRARY Your Community Resource Center r orewor d Hingham High School is an integral unit, but composed of component parts. Academic studies and extra-curricular offerings found here are exceeded by few schools of comparable size. This yearbook will attempt to record our in- terests and the people who participated. To the students and teachers of Hingham High School (without whose efforts these activities would not be possible) we respectfully dedicate this volume. We indeed envied the Senior ' s superiority but soon a few of our Frosh class acquired recognition to make the rest of us feel a little more human. Later in September we elected Alice Beale. Fran ' ' Dennis. Rosemary Bonanno. and Dick Binney to lead us through the year. Bunky Kehoe. Frank Barbuto. and Bill Yafides won the honor of being the only frosh to win varsity letters, while Eleanor Roose made the girls ' honors. As we look upon the assembly efforts of our class we remember the minstrel show before the student body. Among the highlights were the cracked voice of Jack ' Lombaro calling, or should we sav bellowing, for his beloved Chloe and Lester Lamm ' s inspiring I ! I recitation of The Charge of the Light Brigade. Sylvia Hurlock and Carol Peterson, just to men- tion two. kept our marks up to all As (includ- ing Latin i . Three more Frosh girls. ' Gert Gould. Irene Dunn and Cindy Downer, became famous as regu- lars on the twirling line. Most of us survived our Freshman year and in September of 1948 we returned as Sophisticated Sophomores to strut the hallowed halls of H.H.S. Manv Sophomore girls were admitted to the second field hockey team and Eleanor Roose and Bert Lafford held the softball team together. Yito Xardo made a name as an up-and-coming end on our football team. Other names becoming better known in the pigskin circle were Bob Da ' is. Bill Yafides. Bunky Kehoe and Bill Eaton Little Jimmy Papasodero won a reputation as a capable team manger. Doc Blanchon brought glory to the class as the only Sophomore to make the varsity basketball team. Frank Barbuto. Sally Chipman and Bill Yar- rell were the class officers during this year. Of- As in the years past we returned to our future alma mater for another year in the continuous search of knowledge. This year we were Juniors and, be- lieve it or not, upperclassmen. We put on a Prom — one of the best in the history of any Junior class in the memory of H.H.S. Shirley Terry was crowned queen with Reg Con- nolly, Fran Dennis, Cindy Downer, Susie Ed- wards, Gert Gould, Pat Holt, Barbara Johnson, Joan Loney, Jane Palmer, and Mary Ellen Vigneau as her attendants. Bill Eaton led the grand march as our President, with Bunky Kehoe following as vice-president. Peg Connolly kept our notes straight and Carleen Madsen was the keeper of our finances. Charlotte Frost and Sylvia Hurlock made the varsity field hockey team while several others follow- ed close behind as second squaders. This year we heard two more names, Dick Powers and Payson Averill. mentioned in the foot- ball world. Guess what — we ' re SENIORS and what a wonderful feeling it is. We consider the Juniors human, the Sophomores are coming along, but as usual there ' s no hope for the Freshman! Our football team ably captained by Vito Nardo and Robert William Vafides. Esq., had a very successful season. Enfield, Connecticut, took Wey- mouth ' s place as our Turkey Day rival. Bob Davis and Bunky Kehoe captained this game and did a wonderful job as did the rest of the kids. In con- nection with football you ' ll remember we mentioned three Frosh girls who were twirlers, well, this year they are the Big Cheeses. Gert Gould is Head, Cindy Downer, Assistant, and Irene Dunn. Assis- tant to the Assistant. Another honor bestowed upon our great class came when Sylvia Hurlock was awarded the D.A.R. Good Citizenship award. Bill Taunton walked away with the election of the represe ntative to Good Government day to be held again this year. Blond and freckled Payson Averill keeps the Chief Executive ' s chair well dusted, assisted by Bunky Kehoe. Janie Palmer is our secretary and Jack Neville banks our $8.53. Its been a wonderful four years but about over now as we close this chapter in our book of life to start anew. Only Time can tell what the future holds. Best of luck to you and you and you. Its officers are the President and Vice-President, elected by the student body, and a secretary who is appointed by the faculty advisor. Its duties are to make recommendations to the principal to help solve problems concerning the student body and the school. They also serve on committees. Faculty advisor for this group is Mrs. Helen Henderson. William Eaton is President, Frank Barbuto, Vice-President, and Patricia Holt, Secretary. ASSEMBLY COMMITTEE Worthy of a great deal of praise and deserving of much credit for such splendid work during the past school year is the Assembly Committee of 1950- 1951. Their efforts to bring pleasure and enjoyment to the student body have been recog- nized by all. Each person on the committee should receive merit for his achievements, but especially Mr. Redmond, the able advisor, who is always ready to donate his knowledge and time for the students, and Susan Edwards, the chairman of the group. If it were not for this ambitious group, which is always fulfilling ideas for bringing entertainment and instructional discussions to the students and faculty, just think how monotonous the school routine would soon be. The students appreciate the efforts of this fine group. SENIOR MARSHAL BOARD The chief duties of the Marshal Board include traffic super- vision in the corridors, the relaying of messages by means of the loud speaker, and keeping order in the cafeteria. In addition, the marshals aid the student body to enter the auditorium in an orderly manner, help to enforce school regulations, and assist visitors. The Marshal Board this year has been under the capable supervision of Captain. Gerry Goodman, assisted by three Commissioners. HONOR ROLL The High School Honor Roll in- cludes all students who have received no mark less than B as a final mark in a major subject while in high school. As an incentive to the students, this group is taken on several trips each year to interesting local points, the Art Museum, Court House, and the State House. These trips are made on school days. All students participating are ex- cused from that day ' s work. Seniors, who have been on the Honor Roll for four years comprise the Senior Four Year Honor Roll. Hing- ham High School also has a National Honor Society. Students are elected to this organization on the basis of scholar- ship, leadership, character, and service. These students are recognized by col- leges and universities throughout the country as outstanding young men and women. Miss Doris Cushing is the faculty advisor of this Society. HINGHAM HIGH FOOTBALL With coach Art Radvilas and the new assistant coach, Ernie Dorr, making sure their boys were in top shape for the first game of the season, the Big Red whipped Rockland and Abington 26-6 and 21-7 respectively. Upon meeting Braintree also un- defeated, Hingham encountered its first defeat. As a result of the game many injuries occurred. Kehoe, Nardo, Allegra, Jen- kins, and Wylie were missed greatly in the game with Wellesley, and besides that, Bull Vafides was switched from tackle to fullback to try to produce a victory. Hingham was defeated in the attempt 31-0. With still most of the regulars missing from the gridiron, all Hingham could accomplish at Plymouth was a 6-6 tie. Then with most of the regulars back, Hingham won three straight ball games. The first in our path was Whitman, which we took in the last three minutes on a pass, by the score 12-7. Then Stetson of Randolph toppled before us 13-0. Hingham had to be at its peak Turkey Day facing the 1949 Class B Champions of Connecticut, Enfield High. With conditions ideal the hard fighting Big Red walked off the field with a 13-7 victory, with Co-captains, Bob Davis and Bunky Kehoe, and Vito Nardo, Bill the Bull, Vafides, Payson Averill, Dick Fratus and Jack Neville carrying much of the burden. F. Allegra, R. Shannon, C. Spirito, J. Lynch, E. Smith. J. Jenkins, D. Baltucci, E. Callahan. L. Mack, R. Wylie, K. Elliott, A. Hornstra and T. Sargent played well for the Big Red. Hingham should have the same if not a better football season next year, with such veterans as Allegra, Shannon, Lynch, Spirito, Smith, Jenkins, Elliott, Mack, Baltucci, Webb, Sargent, Tusher, Callahan, Wylie. and Hornstra returning to the gridiron. 1950 FOOTBALL RECORD Hingham 26 Rockland 6 Hingham 21 Abington Hingham 6 Braintree 26 Hingham Wellesley 3 1 Hingham 6 Plymouth 6 Hingham 12 Whitman Hingham 13 Randolph Hingham 13 Enfield (Conn. ) Wins ... 5 Losses 2 Ties 1 VARSITY BASKETBALL - : :ng Left to Right: R. We started the season well with a victory over Brunswick. Maine, at Bos- ton Garden. We then won two straight ball games at home. Suddenly we went on the down grade losing five ball games and finishing in fourth place. Hingham was paced all season by captain Doc Blanchon who was one of the outstanding players on the South Shore. Vito Nardo was injured during the middle of the season and didn ' t play at all the last part of it. Lynch, Urbati. Cartmill, Eaton and Averill all played well for Hingham. GIRLS ' VARSITY BASKETBALL An inexperienced but enthusiastic group of girls completed their basketball season with a record of nine defeats and one victory. However disappointing this record may be. the girls can be proud of the competition they gave opposing teams: there was many a close and thrilling game. At the beginning of the season the team defeated Cohasset 31-26. The following are the outstanding games of the season in which the girls were defeated but played fine basketball: Duxbury 33-27, Abington 27-22, Rockland 31-28. and East Bridgewater 28-26. Being the first girls ' basketball team to be organized for some years, this team has laid the foundation for future girls ' basketball, which, judging from some very good Sopho- more and Junior players, is very promising. Eleanor Roose captains the team, and Miss Marion Stallwood is the coach. GIRLS ' VARSITY SOFTBALL Seated. Left to Right: C. Dunn. S. Richardson, C. Peloquin. S. Parsons. S. Finegan. E. Roose. R. The football season started later than usual, but before we could do anything, we needed money. Mr. Redmond headed a group to study the problem; we approved the resulting proposal. Student Activity tickets paid for our activities, and the extracurricular program proceded. The first game, with Rockland, saw our first win. We noticed a refreshment stand at the games, and we spied the new majorette squad. The latter practiced twice a week through the school year, and delighted the spectators at football and basketball games. During this season, the girls worked hard to make the field hockey team a success. The activities started to roll. ' The Late Christopher Bean started rehearsals and the Juniors worked on the Carnival. On the evening of No- vember 18, the result of months of work was apparent in Agricultural Hall. Our Thanksgiving Day rival, Enfield High School, was a good football squad, but. . . .not good enough to down our Hingham team. Turkey tasted just fine to our fellows after the last-minute win for which they fought to finish the season full of glory. The following week the basketball team started practicing. There was something new in this, because they were practicing at the Armory, where all the home games were played. The ice hockey team proved to be one of the best on the South Shore, despite the lack of ice. The girls ' basketball team had a disappointing season: however, this was the first squad in several years. The Rifle Club, a new addition to the activity scene, became one of the clubs in the National Rifle Association. The Senior Prom was one of the social highlights of the year. At about this time, our funds were depleted. Leading citizens of the town worked with Mr. Redmond to arrange a Sports Night. That night was one that will be remembered for a long time to come! Meanwhile, the regular functions of the school went about their busi- ness. The Student Secretaries kept the mimeographs rolling; the Assembly Committee conspired to give us wonderful programs: the inimitable Marshal Board maintained justice and a certain amount of tranquility in the halls: and the Pre-Drivers ' Course turned out a group of excellent hot-rod artists. . . . only kidding! With Spring come birds, flowers, grass, trees, and a hum of activity on the athletic field. On the tennis courts we observe Miss Poole and Mr. Ricci coaching their teams. This year, Mr. Ricci found himself with a new team. The girls are becoming accustomed to winning seasons. On another corner of the athletic field the boys huff. . .puff. . .and win races. The baseball and softball teams swat the balls with fury (and success) . Another sport that we must not forget is golf. Our group of Bobby Joneses do well for H.H.S. The last months of the year are a rush of elections, proms, parties, and goodbyes. The Junior Prom showed again the initiative of next year ' s Seniors. The year closed with the Senior Activities — the Banquet, Reception, and Grad- uation. The building closes now, and so does this book, until September, with a new cycle of activities.
