Wylie, Mr. Radvilas, Coach, B. Bunting, P. Murphy, P. Averill, L. Richardson When Hingham embarked upon its football season, the team was riddled with injuries and the future was indeed discouraging. The spirit and determination which the team displayed under the able leadership of Coach Arthur Radvilas, soon abolished the feeling as our Hingham boys played sensational football. In the opening game, we opposed Rockland and bowed to her in a 13-6 defeat, a heartbreaking loss in the last few seconds of play. Fate again dealt a hard blow to the Big Red as we lost to Milton in our second game of the year. Both these games were played without Bob Hall, one of our outstanding senior gridsters. His return seemed to bolster the spirit of the entire team and Hingham walloped Abington 19-0 in the ensuing game. Again Hall sparked the team to a surprising victory over Braintree, 25-19. Hingham, with a rosy future in store, began its fifth game of the season with Wellesley, but hard luck struck again when Bob Hall broke his ankle. The team, in spite of its loss, played a fine game, but it was unable to overcome powerful Wellesley and the Big Red again was de- feated. JUNIOR VARSITY FOOTBALL 1st row L to R: G. Gent, P. Richards The team quickly recovered to win its next two games from Stetson High of Randolph and Whitman. A pass from versatile half-back Laurie Richardson to outstanding Vito Nardo in the last 30 seconds of the Whitman game made Hingham victorious. On Thanksgiving Day, Laurie Richardson, George Achille, Don Rohrer, Bob Fraser, Jimmy Costa, Jocko Atwood, and Danny Valentino played their last football game for the Big Red . Bob Hall who is also leaving the gridiron this year was unable to participate in this final game of the season with Weynaouth. Although Weymouth defeated us 28- 12, the team gained a moral victory, since it was the only team to score two touchdowns against the mighty Weymouth gridsters. Hingham High should have an outstanding football season next year with such veterans as Nardo, Eaton, Vafides, Powers, Kehoe, and Lynch returning to the gridiron. To Coach Radvilas, the graduating team leave their best wishes for success in the future and also their hope that the football season of 1949 will remain in the memories of many forever and that their spirit and determinations will be a shining example to teams of the future. Cartmill, P.Averill, J.Kelly, S. Bonanno, Mr.Fieger, Coach Hingham had a spectacular basketball season this year, winding up with twelve wins and three losses. The team traveled twice to Boston and returned each time with a victory, defeating Wakefield at the Gardens and St. Mary ' s at the arena. In the old Colony League, Hingham finished second as runner-up to Rockland, with a record of eight wins and two defeats. In one of the most exciting games of the season Hingham beat Rockland in their second clash of the year. Hingham was paced all season by co-captains Jack Mulcahy and Jocko Atwood. Mulcahy, a constant scorer, was an outstanding player on the South Shore, finishing in second place in point average. Atwood cleaned the backboards at each game and also contributed many points toward victory. Doc Blanchon, a junior, was paired with Mulcahy to complete the forward positions. Eaton, Hall, Nardo, and Valentino also saw much activity in both forward and guard positions. To finish up the season in a blaze of glory, Hingham has accepted a bid to the South Shore Tournament where they are considered a favor- ite. JUNICXl VARSITY BASKETBALL 1st row L to R: W. H. S. opened her mighty doors to the class of the half century. We were filled with childish( ?) fear s of senior s, mar shals, and teacher s. These illusions were removed however, when we found a co-operative student body and faculty. When we learned to distinguish ourselves fronnthe other students, elections for our officers were held. Final returns showed: Bob Hall, president; Ann Loring, vice-president; Sally Wolcott, secretary; Jocko Atwood, treasurer. Our activities started with a bang , when a number of our il- lustrious classmates became members of various sports teams. The Freshman Dramatic Club, under the direction of our be- witching Mr. Spink, produced the annual Christmas play for the sus- picious upper-classmen. The performance was a success and we were no longer treated as outcasts. Under the capable leader ship of the Executive Board, we staged the event of our year, the Freshman- Sophomore Party. In the enter- tainment provided, potato races were the hit of the evening. We entered our second year with a worldly-wise air. We were sophomores, the upper realm of lower classmen. We gave the fresh- man condescending glances now and then, only bowing three times to the seniors rather thanfour. Our ship of state sailed smoothly along with Bob Hickey as skipper, Ann Loring first mate, Joan Bouve log keeper, and John Atwood purser. Commander John T. Higgins as ad- visor kept u§ on a straight course. Dr. Harold A. Rice was our new Principal, Dr. Anson Barber our Superintendent, while handsome Mr. Radvilas, and charming Miss Healey became members of the teachers ' staff. We were introduced to John Webb and his cohort, Mr. Shakespeare. Aside from learning how to pass papers correctly(attention one, two, pass), the sophomore class printed The Soph-Isticate , which paved the way for the offi- cial school paper. Our year was not without social events as the Sophomore-Fresh- man Party, at which Bob Hickey and Joan Tubman led the grand march, proved a huge success. We also journeyed to the big city to be thrilled by Anthony and Cleopatra , and amused by The Mikado , Our sophomore year ended a great success. We waved a fond farewell to our years as lower classmen, and started to climb the straight and narrow path to our junior year. The year of 1949 deposited in Hingham High School a junior class that displayed unusual talent in many ways. Our class officers for example boasted Bob Fraser as president, Pete Magner as the veep , Joan Bouve as secretary, and Jocko Atwood as treasurer. The fall athletic season produced such stellar performers as Laurie Richardson, Bob Hall, and Jack Mulcahy; the girls from the hockey team, Judy Mitchell and the Twins , running a close second. The athletic season was operating in high gear by the time the basketball season started. Such top performers as Jack Mulcahy, Jocko Atwood, supported by Laurie Richardson, Bob Hall, and Dan Valentino represented the junior class contribution to the hoopsters. The big social event of the year was the Junior Prom held at the New South School on April 29th. The main event of the evening was the crowning of Lucille Christie as Queen. Bob Fraser.as class president had the honor of crowning and escorting the Queen. The Teen Can selected in its usual fashion a King and Queen from each class. Our Royal Couple was Carol Supple as Queen and Bob Hall as King. --And so we pass on through the portals of the Senior Class. Well, here it is, our final and best year at Hingham High School. It seemed only yesterday that we entered these halls. We, as sen- iors, were determined to make this year full and memorable, and did so to the best of our ability. We had a new Principal and were very pleased to find Mr. Redmond in that position. He has shown a genu- ine interest in all of us, and consequently we express our thanks and appreciation to a wonderful leader and associate. The football team, determined to make this season the best, did a grand job in representing our school. It encountered hard luck when Bob Hall, Don Rohrer, and Danny Valentino received injuries, but managed to close the season with five wins and four losses. We ' re proud of you, fellows. The basketball team did fully as well, losing only four games. Seven of the cheerleaders have cheered their last games for H. H. S. but will always have mennories of exciting times. The boys ' baseball, hockey, track, golf, and tennis teams, as well as, the girls hockey, Softball, and tennis teams fought for the glory of the Maroon and White. Our shy, cute, Louise Forrest surprised all with her vivacious role as Judy, in Junior Miss . Perky little Carol Supple led our band with the necessary zip, vim, and vigor. Ann Loring, a true representative of what every girl should be, received the D. A. R. Good Citizenship Award. Bob Fraser was our student council pres- ident, John Dyer our class president, Peter Magner our vice-presi- dent, Joan Bouve our secretary, and John Atwood our treasurer. It was fun while we were here and we are all going to miss you, Hingham High.
