Papasodero FOOTBALL SQUAD OF 1948 At the outset of the season, Coach Arthur Radvilas, former Stough- ton High mentor, was faced with a squad as green as the late summer foliage. Although handicapped by size, the Big Red offset this disad- vantage via speed and Coach Radvilas ' determination to have both phys- ical and playing perfection. The season was inaugurated by a well-earned 13-0 win over Rock- land High. But as fate would have it, the good fortune turned to bad and the H.H.S. gridsters lost the next four in a row to Milton, Abington, North Quincy, and strong Wellesley. The open date of October 30th was filled by Sandford, Maine and the filler proved a feather in Hingham ' s cap to the count of 14-13. This was it; this was all the now-seasoned squad needed for that lacking last-half surge. The following wins over Whitman and Randolph were just reminders to the South Shore football fans that the Big Red of Hingham was truly a great comeback team. The comeback trail was possible only through the realization of real team play. Co-Captain Charlie Michelson was a bulwark in the Hingham line, and he was justly rewarded by the Boston Traveler ' s Fred Foye in his All Scholastic Team of 1948 as its center. Jack Chase was at long last hitting his potential pre-season billing. Ray Myers, Gerry Pyne, Pete Lincoln, Wally Richardson, Ed White, Bill Antoine, Tom Delmonaco, and Dick (Killer) Murch were all senior par- ticipants who were to play their last game on Thanksgiving Day. As for that last game of the season well, ' nuff said. The football picture at H.H.S. is indeed bright, with players like Hall, Nardo, Richardson, and Mulcahy returning. So, Coach Radvilas, the senior squad members leave with you their memories, hopes, and determination so that the football season of 1948 won ' t be reminiscent of a burned-out candle, but like the great sport stuff which will never die. Hall, Mr. Fieger, Coach 3rd Row. . .R. Burroughs, J. Blanchon, Managers BOYS ' BASKETBALL---1949 This year ' s basketball team did a fine job. Ten of their games were victories, only five defeats. The most outstanding players, if one can pick them, were Hank Hayes, playing left forward, and Dickie Lind, right forward, a co-ordinated team; there was center Ray Myers, al- ways on the ball, too, with his height and ability to get under the basket for rebounds. Big Red Mulcahy will be one of the anchors for next year ' s team. The 48-49 Varsity reached the semi-finals of the Brock- ton Tournament, but tough luck lost them the finals. However, as an all-round year, climaxed (or anti-climaxed) by the Senior-Faculty game, it was a great success, an undefeated Junior Varsity Team com- ing up to take their place as one of the best in the South Shore League. A 2 to 1 triumph over previously undefeated North Quincy, and a 2 to 2 tie with potent Brockton High were the highlights of an otherwise mild season. An all-senior starting lineup, in the so-called H.H.S Water-Winged Sextet consisted of Ed White (G), Gerry Pyne (L.D.), Jack Chase (R.D.), Don Smith (Co-Captain and C), John Catrambone (R.W.), and Skip MacLean (Co-Captain and L.W.). Coach Bill Cronindid a splendid job while under obviously adverse conditions and it ' s hoped that the South Shore League Crown will be captured by Hingham High in future years. In spite of the many cancellations and the injury of their coach, they carried on under the able direction of their Captain, Barbara Burbidge, and wound up the season with 4 wins, 1 tie, and 5 losses. To pick out the stars the whole team should be named. However, special mention should go to the departing Senior stars Barbara Burbidge, Captain and left half, Gail Downing, right half, Lucia Peirce, goalie, Mary Jane Clark, center half, and Eleanor Enos, left wing. I ' m sure they will never forget the fierce battles on the field and the various assortment of resulting black eyes and broken bones. They certainly did their best to live up to their slogan fight fiercely. 2nd TEAM FIELD HOCKEY Kneeling (left to right) . . . C. Frost, S. Hurlock, A. Ber- gan, J. Bushey, J. Baader, B. Conley, P. Delmonaco ' lit m V r B BF ■ Mm x - 8 CONTEMPLATION by CAROL BRADFORD FIELD Life leads onward to our future With a smile and plaintive tear, We are clothed with all the blessings From the hearts of friends most dear, O ' er life ' s pathways we must wander Where the hand of fate may lead, Some may climb and some may falter We shall help with word and deed. With the gift and power, God gave us Hope, and courage, both so proud, We shall strive to touch and gather Silver linings from each cloud. Though our partings may cause sorrow Friendship ' s ties will e ' er be strong, Dreams of childhood days dissolving Mem ' ries dear will round us throng. Smile and say a prayer together Past and future we ' ll combine, Greatest vision to remember GRADUATION- - 49 HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF ' 49 by Betty Papasodero and Carol Field Loud was the clatter one September morn some odd four years ago, when a group of ambitious (?) freshmen set foot into the myster- ious corridors of H.H.S. Freshmen usually are not the most active group in the school but we set a pace and commenced to build it. The Freshmen Dramatic Club did us honor by presenting the traditional Thanksgiving play. As we grew accustomed to the routine of the school, we were less inclined to wander into the wrong door of every classroom. Joan Bushey won glory as the only freshman girl on the Softball team while our freshmen boys set a precedent on the gridiron. There must be something mysteriously different about our class. Each year, as our class became more notorious, the school principals changed. During our freshman year, Mr. Roy Hill served as principal. Mr. Holland took charge in our sophomore year, and Mr. Rice in our junior year. Doctor Barber filled the position vacated by Mr. Porter- Shirley in our junior year. Within a few weeks, we elected Arvilla Reynolds, Charlie Michel- son, Jane Sturgis and BillAntoine class officers to aid in managing for the remainder of the year, the wanton subjects of the Freshman class. As Sophomores we knew our way around so well that we were in- clined to treat the incoming Freshmen with an air of superiority. It appeared (to us alone) that they were endowed with an extraordinarily low mental efficiency. Therefore we treated them accordingly, as was the habit of preceding classes, exclaiming as we did that we were now Sophomores. Our class officers, Earl MacLean, Joan Bushey, Jane Sturgis, and John Zullo, fulfilled their jobs in such a competent man- ner that they made every member of the class proud. Joan Bushey and Russell Dowd were elected queen and king, re- spectively, of the Sophomore class. Russell Dowd, a newcomer to H.H.S. , astounded the music festival audience, particularly the femi- nine population, with his rendition of Bless You. Anne Breen and Sumner Osborn, up and coming actors, displayed their ability in The Thirteenth Chair. The Bishop ' s Candle Sticks, a highly dramatic one-act play, in which Jane Sturgis had a small but important role, won a rating of Excellence in the Massachusetts State Drama Festival as well as in the New England Drama Festival. Then that glorious year began when we as Juniors became the lower half of the upper classmen. But with this joy came, for many of us, the first pleasant ? ? contact with theses. Already half of our toil and worry had terminated. Our new officers were: President, Jack Chase; Vice President, Gerard Pyne; Secretary, Joan Bushey; Treas- urer, John Zullo. Jack Chase, John Zullo and the two inseparables, aided in making that year the success that it was. The memorable event of the year was the Junior Prom. On the evening of May 7, 1948, sweet Nancy Cullinan, bedecked in a floral crown, reigned, with her ten ladies in waiting. Those poor unfortunates unable to witness the assembly spon- sored by the Junior Class missed the rare treat of seeing five junior boys display their talent in a song and dance routine of I ' m a Lonely Little Petunia. In the spotlight of sports we saw the J. V. Basketball team win 16 games straight. John Cooley won fame at the high jumping meets, breaking a few records, while Cliff Blair was no less famous at the shotput. Girls ' sports did not take a back seat in the world of sports and although the weather was not all favorable, the girls ' softball team enjoyed its season. The tennis teams, both boys ' and girls ' , had a successful season with Joan Graham and Bill Harrington as junior stars. Equally successful were the baseball, ice hockey, basketball, golf, and track teams. At another entertaining night at the Teen Can, Wally Richardson and Jody Beale reigned as king and queen of the Junior Class. Oh ! What a glorious feeling we experienced on that day when we entered the halls of H.H.S. as Seniors. Shall we say we strutted down the corridors ? Immediately upon settling down, we commenced to car- ry on our duties as illustrious seniors. Popular Pete Lincoln took his office of Student Council President. Gerry Pyne, Earl MacLean, Joan Bushey and John Zullo served as officers for the year. As co- captains of the football team, Jack Chase and Charlie Michel - son were staunch and true leaders. John Cooley continued on his way to become national champion of high school high jumpers. The fighting spirit which reigned within our basketball team was superior, victori- ous or defeated. The girls ' field hockey team did not win every game, but we are proud to say that it possessed a victorious spirit. The girls ' softball and tennis teams, captained by Joan Bushey and Joan Graham respectively, possessed the determination to make their season the best ever, as did the boys ' track, golf, ice hockey and baseball teams. The marshal board, captained by capable Hank Hayes, maintained law and order in the corridors of H.H.S. Many seniors were exposed to Macbeth and formally introduced to the Modern Problems of Today while others tried their luck at composing short stories. Pat Farrell, the attractive girl with the pleasing personality who led the H.H.S. band onto the field at the football games, and Pete Lin- coln, were elected Senior queen and king at the Teen Can. Jane Sturgis and Arlene Reed were star H.H.S. participants in a Junior Town Meeting of the Air in which they performed splendidly. Every one, students and faculty alike, was pleased when Joan Bush- ey was presented the well-deserved D.A.R. Good Citizenship Award. Even as we looked forward to the day when most of us say fare- well to H.H.S. we remembered the many happy days here, for all our trials and tribulations are compensated by fun and frolic.
