Page Thirty-Se Hingham High School C ass Criistory The United States had been at war one year when we. 116 strong, invaded the corridors of Hingham High School on September 9. 1942. The mighty seniors ' ' had little confidence that we would ever graduate when they saw us slink in. with our faces shiny and our new pencil cases under our arms. But during our four years we proved our worth, not only in the class rooms, but on the athletic fields and in the service of our country. As September wore on, we held class elections and Archie Bjorklund became our president and Johnny Bacon, his able assistant. Pat Mills was elected secretary and Connie Jewett handled the finances. Fall came, leaves were burned and the cheerleaders dusted off their two megaphones. The football season was on and all eyes turned toward the Bronze Freshman. Art Allum. who. by his speed and fortitude, gave strength and encourage- ment to Hingham ' s eleven. We had a good season that year as we lost but one game to Abington and tied Weymouth 0-0. Yes. we had brought with us good football material. The seniors strutted through the corridors, and we envied every nod of their cocky heads and prayed fervently, Please. God. will we ever be seniors? e studied town government with Mr. Scott and were exposed to Shakespeare in our English classes. Mrs. Bullock had our dramatic club doing nursery rhymes in pantomime which added to the upperclassmen ' s doubts as to what would become of us. Art Allum proved himself to be an all-round athlete by making the Varsity basketball team in his freshman year. During the spring John Kain. Billy Hall. Harold Doe and George Lombardo joined the baseball squad. When school ended in June, some of us settled down to a lazy summer while many took extended courses throughout the sweltering months under a program known as Summer School. The following September found us marching off to school again, but now we had lost our bewildered look and some of us had grown two full inches ! es. we were sophomores and according to tradition, the in-coming freshmen were regarded as strange beings created in an off-moment. Danny Kimball and Frances Bonanno replaced Archie and Pat in office, while Johnny and Connie retained their positions as vice-president and treasurer. (We were still looking for a hand-out.) 2-A edited a newspaper in Mr. Webb ' s English class entitled The Student Prints which was baptized by the sweat and carbon smudges of its editorial staff. Football season arrived. Landis. Keenan. Smith. Michelson and Bacon com- peted on the gridiron, adding power to the team and showed promise for the coming years. We scored more points than did any other South Shore team against ey- mouth in 1944. Ten of the boys answered the call to arms. Six donned the blue garb of the Navy. Harold Doe followed in his father ' s footsteps and joined the fightin ' marines, along with Monty Ozan. who distinguished himself in the Pacific as platoon leader and expert rifleman. So the Air Corps wouldn ' t be slighted, George Barbour joined its ranks. Phyllis Butler. Betty Cronin. Tilda Allegra and Ruth Nelson made the second team in field hockey but were aiming higher for the Varsity next year. Alice Balch and Robert Delorev hit their way to tennis fame. Page Thirty-Eight Yearbook 1946 The following September we were juniors. Already we tilted our chins a little higher, for now we were well on our way to the top. Letters came from our classmates in the services. They were on the offensive now, and we were very proud of the job they were doi ng. Mr. Higgins took over our English instruction and introduced check sheets as receipts for our book reports, thus making it impossible for us to lend a helping hand to overworked students, less fortunate than ourselves. The navy cry, Hubba-hubba echoed and re-echoed throughout the building, gaining new significance as it gathered momentum. Our Prom was a gala affair. Ten girls were chosen by the Juniors to represent their class, in the crowning of the class queen. Connie Jewett, one of the ten, was elected queen and she reigned on a flower-bedecked throne. The other girls were her ladies-in-waiting. The seniors graduated with high honors and we left school in June hopeful of our last year. The day dawned bright, that September in 1945 as we sauntered into H. H. S. with our heads high and our chests out. The lower classmen gazed upon us with envious eyes and if we became conceited, please forgive us. We swarmed into 22 which was to be our haven and stopped short! Miss Fowler was no longer there as detention master and in her place was Mr. Thomas. Could he ever swing a wicked gavel ! ! Extra marshals were needed to direct traffic OUT of 22. The Teen-Can re-opened under the able leadership of its new president, Frances Bonanno, and her hard-working staff. When the class presidency changed hands, a female took over the office. (Ann Stuart really did a grand job too.) Billy Linscott became vice-president, Frances Bonanno, secretary and Edith Nickerson treasurer. Assemblies started and the lower-classmen stood to pay respect to us. Johnny Bacon was our Student Council president and Dick Delmonico was his assistant. A new merit board, to help students offset their demerits, was organized under the leadership of the freshman heart throb, Dick Delmonico. Somehow it was one of the most popular organizations! The Hingham Locomotive was the cry which ushered the eleven on to the gridiron this year, right into a successful season in spite of a serious injury to Landis, our hard fighting backfieldman. Al MicheLon inspired his team on to victory against some of our toughest opponents and the boys really loved him for it. To pick out a few stars would be impossible for the whole team practiced together and fought together, was defeated together, only to win more victories, together. The hockey girls, although quiet and unassuming, deserve loud applause for their excellent sportsmanship. Again, to pick out the stars the whole team should be named. Now we have concluded our high school daze. But in reality it is only the beginning, for we are standing on the threshold of a new era. Some of us will make our voices heard above the crowd, some of us will write new chapters in the history of our country already stained with the sweat of our forefathers, the blood of our grandfathers and the tears of our fathers. The rest of us will strive with all our might to make you proud of us, Hingham High School. We ' ve walked the halls of Hingham High, And we have learned our lessons here. A door, by the years unfastened, Swings wide to all our visions clear. As now we don our shining armor, We leave our sports, our studies, too, To enter into wider spheres, That summon the brave and the true. For each must play his role alone, Each in his own constructive way; May ideals formed at Alma Mater, Guide and lead us every day. We promise not to lack in courage, And to ourselves we shall be true. We ' ll hold the faith you gave to us, As a flaming torch with brilliant hue. We shall take our places in the world, With the great and those of power; Most will play a minor role, Some above all men will tower. So, with keen joy and a singing heart, We now advance to a bright, new day. We feel the grip of your fine strong hands, Your wishes speed us on our way. Now ours is all the world to conquer, May the grace of God enlighten our eyes, And may the Class of ' 46, Be blazoned in gold across the skies. The Merit Hoard, meeting weekly, consider each pupil ' s case, keeps all the records for the procedure, and keeps the school office informed of the merits earned.
