Aside from being the largest, we were also the noisiest, most spirited Freshman class Hingham High School had seen in a long time. Right off, we in- furiated the mighty seniors by not sitting up in the balcony of the assembly hall. And thereafter, we became their pet gripes, Hipping up and down the wrong stairs all the time. In the middle of September elections were held; Mike Bravo and Dick Crowley began their three-term presidency and vice-presidency; the lovely A. Adair became the secretary, and George Calvi, treasurer. Football was on and Bob Antoine made the first team. We all went out strong at the games, defying the cheerleaders, who tried to tell us that H.H.S. had no school spirit. We settled down; visited the fire station with Mr. Scott; and learned all about how to work the fire box; envied the high and mighty senior his sloppy jalopy, his woman, and first lunches; and looked forward longingly to the day we might possess such luxuries. Soon, however, something happened which was to change our whole lives and curtail all such dreams. The Japs attacked Pearl Harbor on Sunday, December 7th, an act which did more to solemnize and check us than a million menacingly announced demerits. A subtle change came over the school; Mr. Fieger, the boys ' coach, left to join the Navy; a demolition squad was formed by Mr. Scott; the first aid classes scoured around for victims on whom to practice their carries; some of our classmates left to join up. Jimmy McGoldrick left school to have his appendix out and the Freshmen English classes chipped in some money and bought him best sellers from the funny books section. During the spring, Tookie Ban) made first team in tennis and won his letter. School got out at noon in June and we flew down to Nantasket Beach or to the Red Mill in Paragon Park. The following September we were sophomores β€” upperclassmen, looking way down at, and scoffing at, the freshmen, as was our rightful privilege. Mike, Dick, and George were re-elected, and Lucille Handrahan became the secretary. Great things had happened to the high school during the summer; the office had been moved down to Miss Dickey ' s old room, where there was plenty of room for culprits. Military training was organized down at the armory for boys over sixteen. Pre-induction courses had been set up. Twelve of our classmates had left, to work in the shipyard or join the service. Hopper Flaherty came over to the better school from Weymouth to become one of our best football players. Miss Dickey struggled in anguish, trying to teach us the difference between Gothic and Corinthian architecture. The Geometry classes suffered five or six changes of teachers during the year. At the same time, we welcomed a few newcomers to the faculty: Miss Stallwood, our gym teacher, there- after called Bones, and Mr. Webb, who became our English teacher. He tried everything with us β€” once. Attempts were made to write news- papers in two English divisions. One of them, The H.H.S. Beacon, struggled to completion ; the other, 2B or Not 2B, was not to be. On Thanksgiving Day, we yelled our team onward through rain and mud to a glorious victory in Weymouth : 0-0. Howie Tinkham, Joe Menice, Dick Phillips and Rudy Caparrotta, coached by Mr. Cronin, helped the basketball team through to a victorious season. Mr. Webb worked hard with his sophomores in Room 31. And so did Miss Dot Titus and Phil Hunt down in 21. Together, the latter sold around $7,000 worth of bonds and stamps, witli Room 31 coming in close with $3,000. During the spring, one of our boys, who had been having a hard time settling down to his book s, quietly left school one day, forged his birth certificate, and joined the Coast Guard. A few months ago, Charles Robinson, seaman first class, twice decorated, and cited for Page Forty-Six Hingham Highway 1945 bravery by Admiral Nimitz, celebrated his 17th birthday on the eve of his fifth island invasion. Last year, our Junior year, we looked forward eagerly to first lunch and some food, But no, there must have been a misprint somewhere; we ate second lunch and had to like it. Our size had dwindled down to a mere 132; George Calvi and Murray Clark had left, the former to work, the other to join the Navy. Again we had to adjust ourselves to new teachers. The library had been made into a class room, shelves were built into the stud) hall for books. We were introduced to plump and amiable John T. Higgins, our English tea cher. We sat in breathless anxiety on the edge of our seats, as he tore up ninety per cent of our weekly compositions. During the winter, we went around singing Marzy Dotes, either swooning over, or hissing at, Swoonatra Sinatra. Mr. Abbott joined the faculty and taught physics, winning the adoration of man) anti-Sinatra Juniors. He also became the third basketball coach the boys had had so far. The Constitution and Mrs. Adams ' Forbearance were drilled into us, word for word, bit by bit, for three or four tortured months. Every week Mrs. Adams had us up on the stage yelling, WHHHY! WHHHERE! WHHHOA! (all spelled with an H) at the top of our lungs to some invisible person up in the balcony. We had public events in U. S. History. One Friday we discussed Child Delinquency and became so interested that a committee was formed to see if w r e could start a youth center in Hingham. The idea was good β€” we tried it β€” and it worked. With the expert leadership of Jeanne Mills, the help of Rosemary Murphy, Fletcher Patch, Vic Nosiglia, and Mrs. Henderson, the Teen Can was started the following fall. In June, elections were held. Mike Bravo was elected president of the Student Council and Eddie Rohrer came in second, as vice-president. On September 6th, 1944, 109 of us dragged ourselves into Room 22, now converted into a library with scores of tables, which, we were reminded immediately, were to be handled with great respect. Glancing around, we were instantly arrested by Tommy Woodbury ' s suave mustache. At a second look, we noticed that Ralph Davis had left ; he was in the Navy. In short order, we became acquainted with Miss Fowler ' s V-2 weapon, the gavel. Our opponents on the gridiron were lucky this year; they w on for the most part, although Mike and Bobby Antoine as co-captains worked hard with the team. Just before Christmas we decided to have our banquet January 24th instead of in June as is customary. A lot of boys are leaving before then and we wanted them to be able to attend. Bobby Antoine just left to join the Navy. Rudy Caparrotta finished in January and was drafted. Billy Mitchell ' s going to try to join the Navy pretty soon; Tookie Barry and Eddie Rohrer are accelerating until March; Mike Bravo ' s delayed greetings will appear in his mail box sometime in March, too. And now β€” after three years of 2nd lunch β€” of waiting breathlessly for the privilege of eating first lunch, we are, for the most part, eating third lunch! And so here we are β€” about 110 mighty seniors β€” only we don ' t feel like mighty seniors β€” and most of the freshmen don ' t think we are. We feel very little and insignificant in a world that has no time to let us enjoy an unhurried adolescence. As a class, our history is just about complete, but from our ranks there will come people who will share in the history of our country at home and on the field of battle. From this class will come men and women who will build a new world, a world built on the tenets of peace and security for everybody. Four years we ' ve studied here, and worked And played between these walls. It seems as if ' twere yesterday That we were freshmen, meek, And went around half scared-to-death β€” For just about a week! In no time, we were sophomores; Upperclassmen, bold and stern. Say, how we loved to pin a freshman Down, and watch him squirm ! Then we found that we were juniors; yes, And we were proud of it. We had some fun β€” and then began To settle down a bit. And now we ' re seniors β€” at the top β€” We won ' t be coming back Next year, to a new grade, new books, New studies that we lack. No, we have scaled the ladder ' s height And reached the topmost rung. Now we must loose our hold on this last Step to which we ' ve clung; And leave behind our carefree years Of sheltered, guided life, To make our way alone in this Huge world of w ar and strife. Our schooldays must be left behind. We ' ve had our sport and fun. We ' ve had our preparation β€” now our Practice has begun. Of course we won ' t forget these years β€” Good times ; the friends we ' ve made ; Exams and books and football ames β€” These memories will not fade. But we won ' t be sourfaced, and sad, And sit around and fret, And think about the good old days With bitter, grim regret. No, we ' ll still keep our crazy grins, And wear our loud-striped socks, And sing the latest tunes, and read The funnies, by the flocks. People may say we ' re children still β€” That we don ' t understand That these are serious times ; that we ' re An irresponsible band. But we won ' t mind. We ' ll listen, and Go right about our job, Doing our part to help in cleaning Up that Hitler mob. Some have already left to join The ranks of those who fight ; Others will join them soon, and all The rest will throw our might In there to help them on, to win The peace they ' re dying for, Where there ' ll be no more murder, hate, And greed, and no more war. And so, with eager, hopeful, and Courageous hearts, we leave Our studies, and go forth, new work, New lessons to receive ; Lessons not taught from books β€” no, these Are things books cannot give, Because only by living can We learn the way to live. We carry with us, memories Of these four years now past; And they will serve to spur us on As long as they shall last. And as we part, and to our friends And teachers bid goodbye, We want you just to know we won ' t Forget you, Hingham High. .And we desire that when we ' ve left, ( )ur class will stay alive In the hearts of all who graduate In nineteen forty-five. L irls cftetd uiocketi 7 he year 1944 proved a very profitable one for the girls ' hockey team. Amidst grand coordination and a great number of thrills the team fought its way to nine victories β€” among which was Newton, the State Champions β€” and only one defeat. Due to bad weather the team could not have their much longed-for revenge over this one defeat in a return game. Captain Barbara Lyon summed up the situa- tion in one statement, We lost, but we ' re not licked! The team, coached by Miss Stallwood and managed by Prill Downing, agreed whole-heartedly with their captain and wish only that the season were just beginning. Hingham, Rah! Rah! Rah! Hingham! The Cheerleaders this year, as in the past, have carried the wave of their enthusiasm until that great clamor for cheers and more cheers echoed and re-echoed at both football and basketball games. Co-captained by Billy Mitchell and Jane Conway, this group of peppy seniors has led the spirited Hingham cheers in victories and defeats. Even in the face of defeat these cheerleaders continued to fight for their team and school. Our congratulations to our swinging, jumping, kicking crew!
