It was an experience well worth reserving in the bound pages of this nineteen eighty-one Hindsonian. With temperatures lingering in the 90's and 'l00's, we began the year with great enthusiasm, knowing that every aspect of our school life was going to be a challenging experience. And so, it was. Our experiences were unique and unlike any we have encountered. The year began with a continuation of preparations for our school's evaluation. This, we looked forward to with high hopes. When finally the committee came, every segment in the operation of this great institution was appraised and given good and excellent ratings. We were proud. Across the year, in academics we experienced the challenges of being prepared to lead fruitful lives in this highly technological society. There was the addition of a physics course into which many students flocked. Many students took advantage of the newly instituted Upward Bound Program at Utica junior College and found it most rewarding. It was easy to boast that being located in the proximity of a junior college was part of what made the hindsonian experience unique. Seniors who lacked less than three units to graduate were permitted to take college courses, while at the same time completing required high school units for graduation. In athletics there were great accomplishments. Those which we will forever cherish. Though there was disenchantment which came during the latter part of the football season, we never thought of ourselves as underdogs. Our team, championship-bound, had its hopes destroyed when a dispute surfaced within the athletic association. The girl's softball team was a first in the athletic department this year. The team played many games on and off campus. It was a struggle to build a great team. The basketball, baseball and tennis teams labored well, though affected by the scars of the football team. Our experience would not have been complete without the dedication of our faculty, staff and administration. They, too, were a part. A part of that which we will always cherish 1 The Hindsonian Experience. ,i my ,., it LOL' if 'WE' 'T 'i 'I' 'lf I O I f 'Q,- ss A,... 441.6 , 1 f 53, , Jw , lg: F A lfv, Contents Gpening . . . 2 Student Life . They were right, and it made a BIG difference at each game. Spirit built week by week, until it exploded at the Port Gibson game. Then we knew we had a chance to win the gold ball. Nobody could convince any player, coach, or fan that we weren't terrific. And the next week after we romped Port Gibson, silence filled the air. Whispers echoed everywhere. We pondered our fate. We had been suspended by the Athletic Association as to be placed on probation january 1. It was a shock to all of us. But, nevertheless, we had a good year. It was all a part of the Hindsonian experience. I7 THE SEASCDN OF ALL SEASQNS The Bullpups started this season trying to accomplish a goal which they set several years ago. That goal was to become the West Riverside Athletic Conference Champs. After a good season in 1979, and high expectations for 1980, the Bullpups were met with bitter disappointment after realizing that they would not be able to fulfill their dreams. Nevertheless, the Bullpups had a remarkable season that probably will be remembered as the season of all seasons. While every player played an important role, there were some who played akey role. Leading the offensive unit was Perry Marshall, quarterback, who set a school record of throwing ten touchdown passes this season. The running backs were jerry Vaughn, Clayton Kimble, joseph Robinson, and Aaron Frazier. UlC's Program Offers Rewards Many students took advantage of UlC's Upward Bound Program, which offered them countless and rewarding experiences. Each Saturday students were exposed to activities that aimed at improving their academic and social performances. Mathematics, science, and English courses,as well as music, drama, art, and career awareness constituted the specific areas of concentration. However, recreational and cultural enrichment activities were also a part of the program. Along with activities on campus and in jackson, a three-day trip to Biloxi was planned for the summer months during which time the students were hosted at a banquet honoring their achievements. Hinds County AHS participant Cornelius Foster placed second in the State Scholar's Bowl comprised of Upward Bound students. This made him eligible to participate in the National Scholar's Bowl in Atlanta, Ga. Cornelius, spending four days in Atlanta, represented the program well. He said the competition was great. All participants saw the program as a medium through which they achieved beyond their expectations. They look forward to next year's continuation of the program. Granted that a picture only grabs half a split second, we, the staff, have dared to capture all our experiences along with their significance and glory. As editor of The Hindsonian, I feel very proud of having shared in putting together this account of our experiences. For me the task was quite a challenging experience-one that will pay dividends. I wish to express my sincere thanks to the staff for its hard work. Next, a special thanks goes to our advisor Mrs. Hampton and our photographer Mr. Robert Anderson. It was with all our efforts that this book was completed. I am sure the staff joins me in hoping that this book will always rekindle the memories of a glorious year behind us. Alverno M.
