accept a position with the Mississippi State Department of Education. G. M. McLendon became President in 1938. The next 27 years became known as the McLendon Era . McLendon retired in 1965 at the mandatory age of 70. Dr. Robert M. Mayo became the college ' s fifth pres- ident in 1965, after serving as Vice-President for six years. Now in his third year, Dr. Mayo is Presi- dent of the state ' s largest junior college.

Five Presidents Direct Hinds Through 50 Years W. N. Taylor was elected the first superintendent of Hinds Agricultural High School in 1917. He re- signed in the spring of 1918 because of illness in his family. B. E. L. Southerland became the President in 1918. He resigned to accept a position as President of Mississippi State College for Women in 1930. In 1930, G. J. Cain became President of Hinds Junior Col- lege. President Cain resigned in 1938 to
