L n the Beginning 1917 .-,-- . n n«nttMflttfVte_ ■■., a 5 ' « i □ht : i . ■lit Hinds — Two Histories Hinds Junior College has two histories, that of a high school and that of a college. The main grounds now occupied by Hinds, were trampled by students for the first time in 1917 when the old home site of J. R. Eggleston, captain of the Confederate ironclad Merrimac, became a County Agricultural High School. The idea had been conceived even earlier than this, when an Act of the Mississippi Legislature of 1908 provided for the establishment of county schools of agriculture. After this act was passed, a movement was started immediately for the establishment of such a school for the boys and girls of Hinds County. From time to time, various ideas as to the location and scope of the school were proposed, but it was not until May 31, 1916, that the task of building an agricultural high school for the county was under- taken with the determination to provide a school as good as the best in the land. Attractive bids for the location of the school were presented by the enterprising citizens of Clinton, Edwards, Utica, and Raymond. After considerable deliberation, the County School Board selected Ray- mond for the site of the new institution. In addition to Raymond ' s bid, the County issued bonds in the sum of $75,000.00 to erect and equip the four handsome brick buildings and principal ' s home. The school was founded with the expressed purpose of providing educational opportunities at low cost to students willing to work. It was part of a state-wide agricultural high school program and primarily for rural students. £ $ 4$£A $$ Dormitory B — the first dormitory for men The original college dining hall ; - r-- st; ?• £ £ The original Administration Building - ' ■ ,. ■■:: :■ .■;■■■;■: ' ' ■■:■ : •.: :- --. Southerland became the President in 1918. He resigned to accept a position as President of Mississippi State College for Women in 1930. In 1930, G. J. Cain became President of Hinds Junior Col- lege. President Cain resigned in 1938 to accept a position with the Mississippi State Department of Education. G. M. McLendon became President in 1938. The next 27 years became known as the McLendon Era . McLendon retired in 1965 at the mandatory age of 70. Dr. Robert M. Mayo became the college ' s fifth pres- ident in 1965, after serving as Vice-President for six years. That is what the firm of Carter-Horan and Chapin of Baton Rouge, La., have tried to answer so that the college may begin to plan now to meet the needs of the college. In a detailed 101-page report entitled The Compre- hensive Plan for Hinds Junior College, the com- munity planning group, aided by a committee ap- pointed by President Robert Mayo, have posed needs and problems during the next 19 years. The projected enrollment for the 1986-87 academic year shows that 3718 students will be registered in academic and technical study, while 800 will be vo- cational students, and 500 will be engaged in health occupations studies. This would be a grand total of 5,081 students. The Carter-Horan Chapin plan advises that this assumption would call for 333 faculty members and on-campus living space for 2,706 students. New con- struction projected would call for 25 academic build- ings, 14 residence halls, one field house, and a base- ball stadium. Other needs given special attention in the report in- clude recommendations for a tree planting plan, a new walk and parking system, and the selection of an over- all campus color scheme. 31 TABLE OF CONTENTS THE EAGLE Dedication 34-35 Faculty 36-51 Organizations 52-83 Activities 84-113 Sports 114-145 Vo-Tech 146-159 Classes 160-183 Features 184-199 Dubious Achievements 200-203 Editor ' s Message 204 Index 205-208 33 Dedication We are proud to dedicate the 1967-68 EAGLE to Mr. A. Under the guidance of Executive Editor, Jack Coppen- barger with News Editor Judy Johnson and Columnist Ed Payne filling the spot of Business Manager second semes- ter, The Hindsonian strived toward another year of ac- curate and frequent publication of the facts. Frequency became a resounding word in the PR office as the early Thursday deadline for the newspaper to hit the campus, rolled around too soon for everybody . . . Fresh- man Charles Harris was Chief Photographer, who stood up admirably as Sponsor, Ralph Sowell, Jr. studied the photographic results and at times, with a gleam in his eye toward perfection, flipped the pictures on the floor with the reasoning of let ' s lighten that, or not enough contrast. Along with Sowell, Staff Advisor Bob Hodges co ntributed opinions on policy and expounded the views of the ' boss ' on how to keep the paper from being shut down. Sports Editor Danny McKenzie kept sports fans jump- ing with humor and news from the turf, hardwood ' n cinders side of the paper . . . Gayle Beck, as Feature Editor, supplied students with interesting stories of hap- penings on the campus . . . and then there was the news staff. We. the staff, hope you will consider it one of your most cherished possessions in the years to come, as you think back on your days at Hinds Junior College. In this book, we have tried to capture the fun, humor, and good times experienced by all this year. The 1968 EAGLE is a tribute to the year which has passed, to the events which have been enjoyed by all and to those students who have moved on. I wish to express my deepest appreciation to all who have helped make this yearbook possible. Without the help of Ralph Sowell, Sponsor; Charles Harris, Photographer; Bob Hodges, Advisor; and a very capable staff, the 1968 EAGLE would not have been com- pleted. Thanks to Campus Security for letting us in the dorm at 3:00 A.M., after working to meet the final deadline. Thanks to various sponsors for helping us set up pictures and re- takes. A special thanks to the entire student body for their cooperation and support. It is the hope of the staff that you will find some pictures in this yearbook that will bring back fond memories. The staff is proud of the 1968 EAGLE because of many long hours spent working on it. We hope you will share o ur feelings of pride. Thanks again to all who made the 1968 EAGLE possible. I appreciate the oppor- tunity I had as editor and I hope we have captured some of the highlights of your year at Hinds. Best wishes in the years to come. 204 Student Directory SOPHOMORES Abbott, Eugene. .Vicksburg Abies, Robert. .Vicksburg Acton, Kenneth. .Jackson Acy, Roger. .Jackson Ainsworth, Phyllis. .Jackson Ainsworth, Diane. .Jackson Alderman, James. .Jackson Aldrich, Dixie. .Florence Allen, Frank. .Jackson Allen, William. .Jackson Ammons, Robert. .Jackson Amnions, William. .
