OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS DISTINGUISH SENIORS Diamonds in the rough! The seniors like to think of themselves as being just that when they entered the Hinckley High School four years ago. The class of '54 .has been very active since the time they were considered green freshmen until nowwhen they are often times referred to as dignified seniors. With sixteen credits earned by May 28, when the diplomas were handed out, they looked back at their last year--the best class in the history ofHinck- ley Community High School. Qlfyou don't beleive it, ask themll Six ofthe mem- bers earned a place for themselves on the First Semester Honor Roll, with four receiving straight A's. As underclassmen each member could be found doing his share in band, chorus, octettes, athletics, cheerleading, speech work and in the many clubs in school. As freshmen and sophomores, as well as when they were upper- classmen, a number of the class members were chosen to go to the State Music Contest. Outstanding work was done in speech by Betty Jandt and Debbie Voss, by Pat Herrmann, Marlene Haagensen, Diane McKirgan, Betty Jandt, Roger Petschke, Don Rimsnider and Deborah Voss, inmusicg and several of the boys were active in athletics. Marlene Haagensen was the representative to the Illini Girls' State in 1953. After the class election in the spring of 1953, Paul Bastian emerged as President and Nancy Mullis, the leading lady in the class play, as Vice Presi- dent. Donald Rimsnider was elected to corner even the most warymember for any bills due or overdue, while Diane McKirganwas asked to keep the records. Two of the major activities in the beginning of the senior year were taking a community census and preparing a community calendar. A short time after the opening of school, rehearsals started for the class play Shirt Sleeves which was presented October Z2 and 23 to a record audience. Besides the class play, activities centered around music contests, speech contest and athletics. Pat Herrmann, Hilda Wassmann, Debbie Voss, Nancy Mullis and Lourene Bastian, did outstanding work on the Yearbook and Paul Bastian, Stanley Michaelson, Don Rimsnider and Ronnie Williams, were mem- bers of the Varsity team. Debbie Voss, an honor student, was chosen as the D, A. R, good citizen girl, the award being presented at the graduation exer- cises. Magazine sales during the first semester netted a profit which was used to finance the class trip in May to New York, plans for which were begun in the early part of the school year, under the supervision of Mr. Hillman the class advisor, as the final activity of the senior class as a group. Just to mention a few of the high lights of the trip, there was the boat tour of the island, a visit to the United Nations, to the Statue of Liberty, to the Empire State Building and last but not least a visit to several studios where shows were being televised. In Philadelphia, a tour of the historical buildings of Constitutional Convention days will long be remembered. Now they are leaving Hinckley High School. Today, however, they feel they are gems , requiring a little more polish perhaps, taking their places with the other alumni and hoping each member will be a shining example ofthe grad- uating class in the year of the diamond anniversary. 19
