Let little Alice in Wonderland celebrate all the Happy Unbirthdays she wantsg we like the real honest- to-goodness kind. And while we have not baked a cake or served ice cream, we of the Echoes Staffhave takenit upon ourselves to give our readers an Anniversary Edition. The members found work a bit easy at first, but later on-- oh! my! Information was gathered for each of the seniors and various activities written up in an individual style Qinimitable, they call it.J Everything and everybody was discussed. Photo- graphers were out to get the best pictures--cameras clicked to catch the students unawares. Group pic- tures were scheduled, and November 6 found Mr. Blankenberg traveling from room to room, peeking from the big black shawl--not trying to hide his camera but only himself--calling the short ones down front, and directing others to stand in a certain place. Activities similar to these continued until March 8 when the last material was submitted to meet the final deadline. Hinckley Public Schools are serviced by four privately owned buses. The bus drivers are left to right: Mr, Harry Christensen, Mrs, Harry Christensen, Mrs, Marie White, and Mr. Virgil Pennington, L S Don Wahlgren, Janitor Nancy Mullis, Pat Herrmann, Nancy Houtz, Lourene Bastian, Debbie Voss, Hilda Wassmann, ,, X g BS 'L g wi, 5 , . 7 fe, 'aa 4 c are 2 , . ifiwi 3, ' Eohool days, school days Good old golden Reacllnl 'nl lrltlnl Taught to the to oy stick IW8S l'5'-6 ,lo e omeau You were gl gal You wrote on my slate 'I love you so' When we were a couple of l-side. OUTSTANDING ACCOMPLISHMENTS DISTINGUISH SENIORS Diamonds in the rough! The seniors like to think of themselves as being just that when they entered the Hinckley High School four years ago. The class of '54 .has been very active since the time they were considered green freshmen until nowwhen they are often times referred to as dignified seniors. With sixteen credits earned by May 28, when the diplomas were handed out, they looked back at their last year--the best class in the history ofHinck- ley Community High School. Qlfyou don't beleive it, ask themll Six ofthe mem- bers earned a place for themselves on the First Semester Honor Roll, with four receiving straight A's. As underclassmen each member could be found doing his share in band, chorus, octettes, athletics, cheerleading, speech work and in the many clubs in school. As freshmen and sophomores, as well as when they were upper- classmen, a number of the class members were chosen to go to the State Music Contest. Outstanding work was done in speech by Betty Jandt and Debbie Voss, by Pat Herrmann, Marlene Haagensen, Diane McKirgan, Betty Jandt, Roger Petschke, Don Rimsnider and Deborah Voss, inmusicg and several of the boys were active in athletics. Marlene Haagensen was the representative to the Illini Girls' State in 1953. After the class election in the spring of 1953, Paul Bastian emerged as President and Nancy Mullis, the leading lady in the class play, as Vice Presi- dent. Donald Rimsnider was elected to corner even the most warymember for any bills due or overdue, while Diane McKirganwas asked to keep the records. Two of the major activities in the beginning of the senior year were taking a community census and preparing a community calendar. A short time after the opening of school, rehearsals started for the class play Shirt Sleeves which was presented October Z2 and 23 to a record audience. Besides the class play, activities centered around music contests, speech contest and athletics. Pat Herrmann, Hilda Wassmann, Debbie Voss, Nancy Mullis and Lourene Bastian, did outstanding work on the Yearbook and Paul Bastian, Stanley Michaelson, Don Rimsnider and Ronnie Williams, were mem- bers of the Varsity team. Debbie Voss, an honor student, was chosen as the D, A. R, good citizen girl, the award being presented at the graduation exer- cises. Magazine sales during the first semester netted a profit which was used to finance the class trip in May to New York, plans for which were begun in the early part of the school year, under the supervision of Mr. Hillman the class advisor, as the final activity of the senior class as a group. Just to mention a few of the high lights of the trip, there was the boat tour of the island, a visit to the United Nations, to the Statue of Liberty, to the Empire State Building and last but not least a visit to several studios where shows were being televised. In Philadelphia, a tour of the historical buildings of Constitutional Convention days will long be remembered. Now they are leaving Hinckley High School. Today, however, they feel they are gems , requiring a little more polish perhaps, taking their places with the other alumni and hoping each member will be a shining example ofthe grad- uating class in the year of the diamond anniversary. 19 3,43 Librarian 43 Yearbook Staff 4. Ability to interpret maps and familiarity with place geography are two skills stressed by Mr, Wood, He is discussing these skills with Milan Shifflette, Barbara Jacobson, Marilyn Manson, and Carol Davis, All youth need an understanding of scientific principles concerning man and his world, Glenn Zeiter, Milan Shifflette, Nancy Fouts, and Roger Petschke have set up an ex- periment in Physics to determine the mechanical advantages of the systems of pulleys. Mr, Saddoris is instructing Ieryl Morsch, Judy Bowker, Carla Haag- ensen, Jerry Larson and Carl Wass- man in the use of the Bioscope, an up-to-date method of teaching the study of living material. Because of the ease and speed of Bioscopic projection, more material can be shown and studied in a few weeks than was formerly done in months. May I have this dance?' is what one might have heard Toby Watne ask Linda Wahlgren in the one-act play given by the Speech Class at Christmas time, Margery Whisler, Robert Anderson, and Shirley Pennington seem to be enjoying the dance, too, This course in Algebra has been designed to give training in mathematics as a part of general educa- tion. It is of definite value to the student who wishes to continue further work in mathematics, Left to right -- Jeryl Morsch, Becky Freundt, Gerald Zeiter, David Engel, Learningto play an instrument at Hinckley High School lays the foundation for a critical appreciation and enjoyment of music. Mr, Wight is directing Irene Barr, Bette Richards, Clare Wilson, Robert Dwyer, Ronald Reingardt, and Donald Rimsnider. The ten best-dressed women for 1953 have been chosen, but these girls, Margery Whisler, Linda Biehl, and Linda Palmatier, under the dir- ection of Mrs, Charlesworth, are making plans as to who will be the best-dressed in 1963, 3' r Q Left to right -- Row 1: Marsha Patterson, Charlotte Mullis, Ronald Reingardt, Nancy Fouts, Sandra Palmatier, Miss Barrett. Ronald Reingardt Vice President The members of the class obtained Junior classification with a total of eleven credits. Nancy Fouts moved into the Presidency on class election day. Ronald Reingardt took over the functions of the Vice Presidency while Sandra Palmatier promised to keep the minutes and Charlotte Mullis the money. Miss Barrett was appointed to smooth the troubled waters. On Cctober 8, the first event of the year tookplace--the choosing of the class rings. These rings were received on December 2.4, and considered one of the nicest Christmas presents by the students. Most of the activities and talents of the class were di- rected toward the class play and the promg however, this did not prevent the members from participating in other extra- curricular activities including, baseball, basketball, track, and clubs. Several of the members took active part in both the instrumental and vocal organizations, with four of its members being in Boy's Octette and two in Girl's Octette. Juniors, indeed, but worthy of the name. 26 SOPHOMORES RETURN FOR SECOND YEAR The Sophomore class entered the school year with seven- teen members. Jerry Larson, the band's capable bass drurn- mer, led the class as president. Robert Dwyer, a member of the varsity basketball squad and the boy's octette, was elected Vice President with Nancy Thomas, Secretary, and Becky Freundt, Treasurer. Mr. Leslie Saddoris was class advisor. On October 2, they went social as agroup--sponsored the first all-school mixer by entertaining and initiating the Freshmen. Though underclassmen they proved their mettle by par- ticipating in numerous extra-curricular activities. Several of the group went out for baseball, basketball, and track, and at the same time maintained membership in clubs and other organizations. Eleven of the class participated in the Dis- trict Solo and Ensemble contest in Geneva. As a class they feel they have had a very pleasant and profitable year, nevertheless, they are eager to take the next step when they shall be considered upper-classmen. MOST INTELLIGENT EVER ARE THE FRESHMEN Ronald Klein President John Voss Vice President Scholarship was no problem forthe Freshmen. At least that is what the First Semester Honor Roll indicated. They took their classes right in their stride and placed seven mem- bers on the honor roll in the first semester, thus earning the highest class average with one member making straight A's. Eight of the members went out for basketball with Dean Petscke winning a place on the Varsity Team. Nine mem- bers played in the band. Maybe they were green , but surely no dumb, The greenness soon wore off, however, and after initia- tion by the Sophomores, they knew they had arrived. At the end of each year the classes meet to elect officers for the coming school year. Popular choice for President was Ronald Klein, who is active in athletics. John Voss was elected Vice President, Toby Watne, Secretary, and Eugene Kupperschmidt, Treasurerg thus shutting the ferns out of any office. They are Freshmen now, andnot only have they arrived but they have come to stay--a place is already made by them--a place putting in a powerful bid for recognition. 28 Q9 j Tfyxlw fo + 1 Y ei 1 f WM? ,vm f at Mm- I R l foidixgn o: g of Q o o 34 A AWN. WHY READ? If one were to ask students Why do you read? many would reply, We H read because we have to. That is true, of course. It is true for all of one's life. No one can get a- long in our society without doing an immense amount of reading. The skilled laborer and professional worker today DEPEND on books, trade magazines, bulletins, etc. Therefore, ifeducationis to represent permanent gain for the student it must guide him toward self-dependence in reading. To be able to command the services of books, to acquire familiarity with magazines, bulletins, and pamphlets is the purpose ofthe library which offers material for both study and leisure-time reading. The librarians, Lois Miller, Lourene Bastian, Nancy Mullis, Carla Haagensen, Hilda Wassman, Gail Abell, Laura Matter, Jacquelyn Chamberlain, and Paul Bastian, are ever ready to lend a helping hand. SENIOR CLASS PRESENTS SHIRT SLEEVES The Rand family had inherited their fortune and had never realized what economy meant, Then over- night, they were brought face to face with poverty and were threatened with the loss of their home. Margie Scanlan, the scorned daughter-in-law, succeeded in reviving the hopes of the family, This was the gist of the domestic comedy, Shirt Sleeves , presented by the Senior Class on October 22 and 23. MUSIC-THE SPICE OF LIFE This is the theme of the members of the Mixed Chorus, and they try to provide spice as thoroughly as possible. Every Friday at 12:30 music begins to trickle out of the music room. Forty-eight voices produce music of a delicate tone quality and blend. Several newcomers strengthened the sections which suffered from gradu- ation last spring. The Music Contest in the spring is a source of much worry, but the usual success and praise follows the Annual Spring Concert before an audience in the Gym. GROUP SINGING LIGHTENS SERIOUS SIDE OF SCHOOL You have to know your do-re-mi's to belong to these groups of singers. Every Monday and Thursday afternoon at 12:30 one can hear the Girls' Chorus in the music room--practicing for the Christmas Concert, the mu- sic contest or the spring concert, striving for perfect harmony and voice blending. Perhaps it's the two hours of practice per week that does it, but when those students sound out Forever and Ever --it's music. This was a year of many activities for the Girls' Chorus and Girls' Quartette. The first place at which the Girls' Quartette showed their vo- cal talent was the Pure Milk Association's annual meeting, while the Girls' Chorus was not heard until the Christmas Concert. After the Christmas Concert, the Girls' Chorus started to practice for the Illinois High School Association Music Contest. As a climax to the year's activities, both choruses participated in the Spring Concert which was held on April 2.5. J 35 Ready? Iwant clear sustained tones. So many new members were added to the band during the school year that there was a shortage of uniforms in the spring. The group com- posed of over sixty-seven members rehearsed on Tuesday afternoons at 2:30 and on Fridays at 3:30. The 1953 summer season included marching in the International Lion's Parade in Chicago and the Mardi Gras Parade at Riverview. Engage- ments during the year included participation in the Hinckley Homecoming in August and in the entertainment at the Sandwich Fair in September. It was also one of the bands selected to march in the DeKalb College Day parade. 36 Petschke, Toby Watne, Ronald Reingardt, Donald Rimsnider. The massed band, consisting of 170 members from Hinckley, Som- onauk, and Big Rock, gave three concerts during the year. The first concert was given in Somonauk in December with Mr. Fabish as the guest -director. The second concert was given in Big Rock in January and the last concert, in Hinckley on April 10. A pep band was organized which played at most of the home basketball games. Nineteen soloists and nine ensembles, entered the District contest at Geneva, while the band entered the contest at Genoa-Kingston. A concert was given on March Z, so the public could hear the contest pieces. Many won first place at District and went on to State Contest at Charleston, Illinois on April 30 and May l. The spring concert was held in April which ended the school-year activities, but many activities are planned for this summer. The general opinion seems to be that Mr. Wight is a swell direc- tor!
