Hilton Central School Hilton, New York 1964 H iltorial Hilton Central School at night Contents Seniors Senior High Junior High Faculty and Administration Sports Shadows As shadows come and go, so do people. Some are great and tall, others plain and small. When the objects drift away, the shadows still remaing and when people drift their separate ways, invariably something is left be- hind. Mathematics problems and Latin phrases are never completely erased from the blackboard. They are merely removed to make room for following students, who will, in turn cast their shadows and drift their separate ways. A 4 H J N E Nineteen sixty three was a year marked with tragedy, in Hilton, our own flag was lowered twice in mourning. The sorrow of a nation found its way into every home in Hilton on that infam- ous November dayg only a month earlier, a more personal loss sorrowed a whole village, for there was a man . . . whose name was John. John Fitzgerald Kennedy John William Collamer '6We dedicate to you, . . . Within our school system, the class is a main unit. Every student identifies himself with his class, and like an indi- vidual, a class begins to take on the personality of its members, until each one is distinct and characterized. Like a person, this unit forms cus- toms and qualities, and even finds its own friends. In our freshman year, Mrs. Fowler, when we began to see the insignificance of the being of a Hfroshf, you were there, as an advisor, and for most, a patient teacher. During our sophomore year, you were a friend to our class, a term not always too widely applied, and you offer- ed again to help advise, us. We remember all this. Because you have helped all of us, and because you have given so much to the individuals of our class, We dedicate the 1964 Hiltorial to you, Mrs. Fowler, with the many thanks we will never really be able to express. We sought. . . We cheered We lost. . . We won 3 5 5? if E E E Q 5 22 3 'E 5 2 E F Q Lf 3 5 5 G L, A Q 5 Seniors Shadows on Stage. . . All the world's a stage, the curtain falls, and proudly the seniors of the Class of '64 march from a high school stage. We leave not empty handed, however, for we carry diplomas, those symbols of long and hard workg we smile as if one, and all eyes are aglow with the knowledge that the world .awaits us. The play came off beautifully, and the reward was the looks of pride from those close to us. Several times we forgot our lines, but there was always someone to remind and guide. And so we turn for the last time, leaving shadows, now cast as memories, where once we played the leading roles. Harris The band at the freshman dance. Sophomore Year Once we became sophomores our outlook seemed much brighter, for we were no longer Hlow man on the totem pole for now the little freshmen were beneath us. Mrs. Fowler, our freshman advisor, stepped up with us and Mrs. Shumanski and Mr. Wojnowski also joined the ranks. As head of the class, Linda Metherell wielded the president's gavel with Marti Heffron as vice-president, Peggy Green- well as secretary, and Ruthie Efing as treasurer. Since we now had a bit of experience on our side, we successfully put on our dance entitled Hernando's Hideaway with the dance centering around our giant black spider and his web. The biggest highlight of the year was the 4'Spring Festival which we hoped would become a class tradition. After our success with the projects of the year, we felt that we were well prepared to become juniors. Freshman Year Our freshman year was one of trial and error. You might say that we had to test our new status. Often times we would suffer little indignities from the upperclassmen, but we always came back for another try. With a little prompting from our patient advisors Mrs. Rowley, Mrs. Fowler, and Mrs. Crosby we finally got through the year. Our four able officers were ,lim Bigler as president, Gary Cannan as vice-president, Lee Anne Hendershot as secretary and Linda Metherell as treasurer. We really put forth a good deal of effort on class projects. The theme for our dance was Carousel and the en- tire gym looked like a big merry-go-round. Despite all beliefs our play came off beautifully. Lastly we had the job of brightening up the school at Christmas time which we did with snowmen and picture style Christmas stories. Feature of Hernando's Hideaway. A Year in Shangri-La Our junior year was darkened by a small catastrophe beyond our control-- We had no junior play. We remedied this condition by a memory-crowded evening in Shangri-La, our prom. Peggy Creenwell and Toby DiLella replaced the king and queen of '62, Diana Anderson and Chuck Mance. Agnes Marafioti, Sugar Stockmeister, Donna Kuhn, Linda Metherell, Becky Fallon, Dan Allen, Tom Rundell, Jim Bigler, Ron Hendershot, and Bill Schmitt were court members. On October 9, 1963, we initiated what We hoped would become a tradi- tion--a ring dance on the day We re- ceived our class rings. Our class officers were Scott Lane, president, Dan Allen, vice-president, Peg Greenwell, secretary, and Doreen Lambiase as treasurer. Mrs. Smith and Mr. Frasch served as our capable advisors. Un Class Day, as We replaced the outgoing seniors, We felt joy and a bit of sadness. Now We were seniors, and this was our last year in Hilton. Junior Prom King and Queen Peggy Creenwell, Toby DiLella Junior Prom Court. P C6 Senior Class resents Twel th Of Never Couples at tables during band break. Kenny Unwin and his orchestra pro- vided the music for our Senior Ball this year. Toby DiLella, serving as Chairman of the dance, along with all the other members of the planning and decorating committees, worked many long hours to insure the success of the dance. The at- mosphere was set with a variety of ab- stract designs and a large golden sundial in the center of the dance floor. Lasting from nine until one, the ball was a success and provided many lasting memories for those who attended. A letter from the family. Caryalides in Athens. Tom Rundell A Summer In Athens How many people will ever have the opportunity to have a second home, second country or second people? I Wish everyone could. Perhaps it's the hardest thing in the world to put a real feeling into just plain black and white. Even though the sun shone, and the sky was always the most beautiful blue in Greece, the day I had to leave a dark gloom swept into my heart, knowing that these good-byes would be forever. I had to gather my strength, knowing that the world goes on, to face a future like the horizon, - con- stantly there, and always much more to be seen. Of course, visiting another land, another people, a different way, made home a much better place to be. I guess I really never realized the blessings of being an American in the land of the free, the brave, the wonderland where hopes and dreams can become reality. Mrs. Klock, Giorgio, Mr. Klock, Barry. Barry and George shoot pool. Our WF air Exchangf-39' ---Giorgio Mancuso A year ago America was still a dream for me, but through the American Field Service I could finally realize it. I had the opportunity to travel all around Europe with my family since I was a child, but all I knew of America came from my mother who came here as an exchange student several years ago. I live in Rome with my family which consists of one older sister, my mother, my father and my little dog. My mother Works in the American Embassy in Rome, my father Works in the Cities Service, which as you know is an American company, and my sister is studying to be an interpreter. Score, score, score! chanted from the pep rally to the last minute of the game. We live in a small towng we have a small school, though it grows in hundreds every year. We cross class lines-in our clubs, in our newspaper staff, in our open dan- ces, and in our friends. We're from Hil- ton. We're a small school of about 1200, probably a small shadow of the Hilton of the futureg may the spirit of Hilton always be the small-school spirit of Hilton 1964. 5'We,re from Hilton l Seated: Ralph Palumbo, Pres: Sharon Germeroth, Treasurer: Nita Visser, Vice-Pres.: David lervolino, Secretary. Marching Band The marching band, under the direction of Mr. Charles Lucie, has shown excellent promise and ability in the short time that they have been organized. Testimony to this is the trophy awarded last summer to the band at the Caledonia Fair for the best performance by a marching band in the competition. Last summer also the band proudly represented the Hilton Volunteer Fire Department in the Firemen Parades held in this and surrounding counties. The all-girl color guard and the major- ettes added to the appeal of the band. The Hilton Central School Marching Band has all the ingredients of a cham- pion group. The guidance and instruction of a capable director, the industry and enthusiasm of talented students, plus the color and gaiety of the majorettes and color guard, equals an organization that deserves the praise and support of everyone in the Hilton Central School District. The aims and objectives of a student council should reflect the needs of the school as ex- pressed by student leaders, other students, the faculty and administration. Among other things, a student council transacts business, enacts rules, and represents the general interests of the students, so as to maintain a higher standard of social living and create a spirit of mutual under- standing and cooperation between the student body and the administration. With these things in mind, our Student Council undertook a number of projects during the yearg these projects were in the interest of the entire student body. The Student Council functions under the guidance of its advisor, Mr. Brenon Caton. HONOR SOCIETY, Row One: Mr. Bellinger, John Doell, Nancy Shi-rtz, Diane Camp, G. Ricotta, T. Burger, N. Visser, M. The members of the National Honor Society are chosen by the faculty from the ranks of the sophomore, junior, and, senior classes. The first qualification is a cumula- tive scholastic average of 8596 or above. Each candidate is then judged on his accomplishments in the fields of Char- acter, Leadership, Scholarship, and Service. During the year, the society includes in its itinerary various service projects, not the least of which is a volunteer tutoring service available to all students desiring help in academic subjects. Taking its name from a delicate blue flower found in the mountains of Germany and Switzerland, the Enzian Society is composed of students of the sophomore, junior, and senior year who have obtained a cumulative scholastic average of 90W or above. One of the purposes of the society is to promote cultural appreciation. In order to do this, the members often take in plays and concerts being performed in the area. PRESS CLUB Row One: T. The Board has many functions, one of which is to pro- vide adequate facilities in order to attract new teachers to our school system. This year eighteen new faculty members have been added to the school staff. The Board members meet many challenges throughout the school year. This year there were two defeats on the proposal to build a new Junior High School. After a committee was set up to investigate this matter further, this proposal was passed. The Board meets the first and third Tuesdays of every month. These meet- ings are open to the public. However, the board may call closed meetings, in which voting cannot take place. The Board members' occupations vary from a Kodak worker to a local busi- nessman. This enables the Board to be better informed of our changing world. 'Education is a continuous process. Judging right and wrong, good and bad, always with an unbiased viewpoint, time has left a shadow on the fields where Hiltonls teams have com- peted. Our trophy case gives evidenceg but there is more to it than that. The crimson and the white have always been proud colors for any athlete to wear. They stand for, and always will, a spirit of good sportsmanship and fair play. Sports are necessary, for physical and mental fitness go hand in hand. So the game begins with a hand shake, and May the best team win. 08 Junior Varsity practices Dan Curran at bat Last spring, Coach Tolhurst led his boys to a fairly successful season. The team was weakened by the loss of several lettermen, and as a result last spring was a building year. This year they expect a much more powerful team with the addi- tion of the new members of the much more successful Junior Varsity team. The Junior Varsity was coached by Mr. Spross. The team encountered its strong opponents in the beginning of the season, and expected a more victorious season's end. School spirit is not a color, an unde- feated team, nor the newest of beautiful buildings. Spirit is the untangible feeling that can only be present within a group composed of people who simply like each other, and who are proud of themselves. We have taken this opportunity to give Hilton Central a golden yearbook. A yearbook should be a word and picture record of the school year. The colors on this book will not tell you the color of your teams' uniforms, nor anything else you may associate with uspiritgl' the color only reflects what we feel to be the real spirit of a growing school within a growing community.
