I-HLTON N Y PFQOUDLY PQESENTED BY THE O OS HQLTON Supervising Principal, Lewis Markham and Valerie Marx, Student Council President. KNOWLEDGE MAY BE GAINED FROM BOOKS, BUT THE LOVE OF KNOWLEDGE IS TRANSMITTED ONLY BY PERSONAL CONTACT. -Henry VanDyke g To gain something we have to give something. From your teachers and fellow students who have given to you, you have gained. Be proud of your knowledge, be generous with your knowledge, be creative of new knowledge, inspire and stimulate others by your love of knowledge. No greater gift can you give to others than this love of knowledge. lt means security for America, it means your success as a person, it means your future happiness, it means the preservation of our civilization. Directed by Miss Durrant with Sandra Smith acting as student director, the play centered around Miss Letty Madden and her inhibitions. On the advice of her doctor she attempts to answer her impulses and does so by shoplifting, roller-skating in the cellar, keep- ing company with a suspected thief and taking on a decided love for per- fume. All this worries her sister Agatha, her brother Adolph and his daugh- ter Julia immensely and they call upon a detective for aid in their hour of need. Naturally, all ends well and happily, Adolph is found to be the actual crook, Letty gets her man, as does her new-found friend Miss Norris. Agatha's three hat-making friends are relieved and the dizzy maid receives a chance to answer her calling-that of trying ballet dancing. Tryouts, rehearsals and actual performances are over and our thespian careers are ended. However, none of us hold any qualms for it had con- tributed in making our Senior year all the more enjoyable. No sooner had school begun last fall when time for the Sophomore Hop rolled around. They chose to have a record hop with Nick Nickson playing host and a theme of Sleepy Hollow Hop. This was a fine choice which resulted in an evening of fun long to be remembered by all attending . The soccer, basketball, tennis and baseball teams found much of their power stemming from the men in this class while the junior varsity cheering squad included three girls from this class. Next came the Sophomore play, a one- act comedy directed by Mr. Lester. This class has enjoyed its first two years in high school and are looking forward to P 'd ,WW N, F kl' Ad . . . . Last spring Hilton Central High School held its first 'tapping' cere- mony to welcome the charter members of Hilton's newly-organized chapter of the National Honor Society. The solemn ceremony impressed its audience as each new member was 'tapped' and walked to his place on the stage. When the fifteen selected students were all seated upon the stage, it was explained to them and the audience what an honor it was to become a member of the National Honor Society. The qualities for membership were discussed- leadership, scholarship, character, and service. The assembly closed with the feeling that perhaps a new trend had been initiated at H. C. S. to place more emphasis on students' scholastic ability. This winter the new members were 'tapped' to fill the place of those who were graduated. The results of this ceremony were anxiously antici- pated by all students. Guided by the Society's advisor, Mr. Joseph Pasquarella, Hilton's chapter of the National Honor Society is paving the way to gain more at- tention for those students who excel in leadership and scholarship. jbogicaf QQLK Seated Mr Vovolo Domshrooder Knlght Pettufer Standmg Eustos Wombwell Anderson Mnkel Absent Meyers Beordsley St John Stondmg Mr Loughheod G Doles Boose J Doles Gormley Woodoms Coe Cosmcn Foley Wrlluoms Seated Tolhurst Rundell Cooper Pmchord I 0 1 n X I X04 dw mum? Each member gave at least one period of time helping Miss Seaman by filing, shelving, alpha- betizing and many of the other numerous duties of a librarian. The members planned and participated in several activities. The Book Fair was the largest project under- taken and they also held a faculty tea and presented an assembly on books. The members learned an efficient way of running a library while helping the librarian with her many duties. Miss Seeman ..f.ia '1f... ... ...e 'i . This year started rather slowly for the choruses with practices scheduled during after school hours. Sports, clubs, and other activities consumed the time of many people wishing to participate in chorus. After some shuffling, rehearsals were reslated for noontime and the do, re, mi's were again loud and clear. Soon preparations for the All-State Music Festi- val had to be readied. This is an annual event and this year Hilton Central played host to the cream of high school musicians from our area. We were fortu- nate to obtain fine directors for the chorus, band, and orchestra. This extravaganza was quite an undertaking for our music department but with the aid of the en- tire village andthe H.C.S. staff things went perfectly with the resulting performance a decided success. With this behind them, the chorus could settle back to normality once again. Mixed chorus composed of guys and gals from the Sophomore, Junior, and Senior closses met three times weekly with the Boys' Chorus meeting on Friday's and the Girls' an Wednesdays. Freshman girls were permitted to join Girls' Chorus this year also. Because of the slow start and short practice sessions, it was impossible for the choruses to present as great o Christmas program as in previous years but some help was given to them by Elizabet Lonberg, our Swedish exchange student, in singing songs from her country in an assembly preceding Christmas. Diane Damschroder, Bonnie Beardsley, Sharon Rowley and Karen Schmitt kept up their fine quartette with assistance given by Miss Ball in helping them with different numbers. In the Spring the chorus and band combined to present the annual evening of musical interpretation. Miss Geraldine Ball directed the choral groups this year and the students in them indeed benefited from her knowledge of the musical arts. The Athletic Association Council, now in its third year, is a group that does more for the school than is often known. Consist- ing of representatives of the administration, faculty, student body, and physicial educa- tion department, the group has as its aim the mental and physical improvement of the participants and spectators of all school sports events. The objectives and purposes of this or- ganization include the promotion of inter- scholastic sports and good sportsmanship, the President W - - , , Vice-President , . , Secretary-Treasurer raising and apportioning of funds, and the securing of adequate protection for partici- pants of all sports. The Council also has charge of eligi- bility rules for students interested in school sports and the organization of pep assemblies throughout the Year. The Athletic Association Council hopes that each year its efforts will bring about better sportsmanship and greater student participation in the many and varied events of our physical education program. as Jay Heise , , Mr. Wright . . Gates, Ryan, W. Gates, Hickey, Hunter, Chase, Stoner, Slater, Brucker, Dales, Mr. Eckler, Foulkrod. Absent: Haslip, As the 1958-1959 basketball season started, skeptical observers, recalling the suc- cess of last year's Cadets, looked on with disapproving eyes. Tsk, tsk--too bad you lost Gates, Boothby, and Crowley - there was a team! But Coach Eckler and his team of seven new recruits to five holdovers went on to show them all. Yes, Bob Gates has graduated but Dick was here to show the same spirit and fight his older brother had demonstrated. His back- board skill was Perhaps even greater and his scoring equal to that of Bob's. Jay Heise was there with the skill and endurance that made him stand out as a ball- player. Jay, playmaker of the squad, shot few baskets that didn't give with the old swish. Brad Chase's allround adeptness at the game cannot be overlooked. Completing the start- ing lineup were Doug Brucker and sophomore Steve Slater who did fine jobs . Due to wrist injuries, Bill Gates Canother of the basketball playing clanl and Jim Hawk- ins were unable to see much action until the second half. The remainder of this top notch squad was composed of Fred Haslip, Mark Stoner, Denny Ryan, Bill Hunter, and Terry Hickey -all in all four Seniors, four Juniors, and four Sophomores. This team seemed not to have a single star but rather many. Games were seldom when two or three players' scoring laurels didn't break into double figures. Perhaps it was this and the remaining factor that the Cadets played as a team that aided them at any rate. Those initial skeptics were soon eating their words and H, C. S, again had a successful season. This Year's varsity was cheered on by six Junior and Senior young ladies with much pep and grace. Chosen by a group of teachers and students early in the fall, they soon were busy learning the cheers and creating a gen- eral feeling of high enthusiasm among the students. ln October the squad journeyed to Canaseraga for a Cheerleading Clinic where much was gained along the line of improving their school yells. Composing the squad were Seniors: Jus- tine Hemmerich and Audrie Unterborn, Bon- nie Beardsley, Sharon Rowley, Nancy Becker, and Sharon Maggs all Juniors. Audrie and Tina were co-captains with Donna Catlin serv- ing as substitute. A mascot took the form of five-year old Debby Kelly whose antics often had the crowds oohing and ahing. Uniforms consisted of red knee-length box pleated skirts, white turtle-neck sweaters with each girl's name on the collar, and red and white fur balls on the sneakers. All in all these girls accomplished much through creating enthusiasm at the weekly games, assisting at pep assemblies, and pro- moting good will between school systems. With a Yea we salute them. The yearbook staff of the l959 HILTORIAL is very grateful to all of those who gave their time and effort to insure the success of this year's HILTORIAL. We especially want to thank Mrs. Dorothy Crosby, our advisor, who gave her help whenever it was needed. It is not a simple thing to put out a school yearbook-filled with those things that make a school yearbook memorable, It becomes even more complex when both the staff and advisor are new recruits, having never before tackled such a task. Each year further improvements and additions on the book itself do not lighten the load. But somehow, through co-operation, work, and time, when the yearbook is finally put to press and all the struggles and problems have been worked out, it is pleasant to look back and say that it was worth while - that each person gave his utmost to make the i959 HILTORIAL one that will be remembered in the years to come.
