Numerical growth has not, however, overshadowed musical growth. The senior band has made remarkable progress in the types of music it performs and in the manner in which this music is played. For the first time this year the senior band attended the Monroe County Instrumental Festival, and its performance there received excellent comments from everyone present. It was worth while waiting until this year to make the county debut, because this fact enabled our band to do so with skill and confidence in their ability. The peak of the musical season was again reached at our own Spring Concert, where the fruit of the years labor was in full swing. Three major musical works were performed. The Walls of Jericho, a difficult overture featuring the en- tire trumpet section. Plantation Memories, a southern rhapsody, and Ballet Egyptien, featuring the clarinets and woodwinds, all these brought enthusiastic applause. No band concert is complete without the lighter side, thus several marches by Sousa and Fillmore added to the atmosphere of the bands performance. As an added treat, the Village Band, a small ensemble, performed as the bands of old. Rounding out the program was a fine performance of several Strauss waltzes, which always seem to please any audience. Looking back over the past few years, it is clearly evident that the effort and ambition of the senior band have paid big dividends and they make the future seem bright with musical promise. 59 77 def Jia aww' Seated Arnold Dunbar Germeroth Beehler Iaynes Blau Hamlm Kluth Adams Pntman Schultz Rentkcrt Wallace Masters Jaynes Standmg McMann Chase Albano Nix Guenther hE organxzatlon plctured above our J un1or Band IS the prxmary reason why the semor band has progressed so greatly durmg the past four years Th1s group of young mus1c1ans furmshes the semor band wxth experlenced lnstrumentallsts, chlldren who have rece1ved the1r baslc tra1n1ng 1n ensemble playmg, students who are ready and eager to challenge the1r older cohorts when they take the1r place 1n the semor band Thls Jumor mus1cal group has not been overshadowed by the sen1or band, and the1r progress IS equally evldent Competmon here IS keen, and ambmon hlgh because these students realxze that tlme spent here 1S the most effect1ve means to obta1n1ng that coveted pos1t1on 1n the semor band Just as long as the Jumor band IS well stocked w1th amb1t1ous mstrumentallsts both thls band and the semor band can rest assured of an ever mcreasmg proflcxency and mus1cal standards g- Y 60 rf' ' ' S Q,l O, l T UNLIIIIIQ1 ILTUN ?'XQ?1XS?fXS?N8?w?w 3 N . 9 D MV' ' xi' WV'-Lf: l 2224 ' -.ft X nfl?
