'Meg we SOCIAL STUDIES, exciting to every stu- dent, is divided into three study sections. Sophomores venture into the past and cover a detailed development of civiliza- tion from primitive man to modern man. Juniors get a deeper insight into true citizenship with studies geared toward understanding our way of government. In addition to the standard courses, special courses have been introduced in the SCIENCE DEPARTMENT in recent years. PSSC lPhysical Science Study Committeel Physics in- troduced as a pilot course three years ago will eventually be used in instructing all students enrolled in physics. A. course similar to this approach was introduced irvthe area of Chemistry under the heading ot Chem Study Chemistry. It placed stress on laboratory experiments an'd demonstrations. Both courses were geared tor the college preparatory student interested in the scientific field of study. Local Plants and Animals was introduced two years ago in the Biology section, providing students with in- formation, experiments, and a chance to discuss local plants and animals seldom tound in mainland texts. Field trips were taken to collect plants and animals found on the Big Island. Faculty Welfare Comm.
