Mrs. Putnam Retires This school session terminates twenty-nine years of service to Hilo High School for Vice Prin- cipal Sarah W. Putnam. Horn and educated in New England, Mrs. Putnam taught for two years in the East before coming to Hawaii. Her first year in the territory was spent on Maui, where Mr. Putnam was then teaching. Mrs. Putnam joined the Hilo High faculty in 1923 and in her time here has taught physics, ma- chine shop, science, bookkeeping, typing and of- fice practice. She had earlier experience in teach- ing American history, French, biology. algebra, and geometry. She surely knows the feel of classroom situations as well as the administrative angle. In 1928, she became vice principal. Her office handles school finance and attendance records, big jobs for a school the size of Hilo High, requiring the assistance of two full time clerks and numer- ous student helpers. ln addition to supervising these activities, Mrs. Putnam has been student council adviser and attended to myriad other del tails. Her mantle will indeed weigh heavily on the shoulders of her successor! In her many contacts with students over the long period of years, Mrs. Putnam has known and influenced a substantial portion of the popu- lation of Hilo. Order, accuracy, thoroughness are the qualities she has demanded of all whose activities she has supervised. A sense of indi- vidual responsibility, conscientious performance of duty, and initiative in attacking and solving problems are outcomes of her teaching and train- ing, gratefully acknowledged by Hilo High alumni, as maturity has given them deeper un- derstanding and fuller appreciation of a real friend of youth. l. Counsellors Shigeo Nakamura and Marv Gt-nung: 2. School Nurse Ruby Scott: 5. Librarians Robert lialtlwin and Marian Hall: -l. Caft-tt-ria Manager Vivian I.t-itlicail.
