Besides devoting one whole day to the Victory Corps even the school work has been planned to help win the War and the peace. In the World History classes the teachers have supplemented the textbook material with current events because, after all, what is happening today will be world history in years to come. Great stress has been laid on American History, and in the senior social studies classes the students are taught to analyze the economic, social and finan- cial problems that will come after the war. Our Health program hasn't been overlooked either. In the physical education classes there is special instruction in communicable diseases, also all the students who planned to work in the cane fields as part of the Victory Corps were given physical examinations. Physical education really isn't what it used to be because besides giving up time for lectures on diseases the boys have also had to give up their play periods to go and work in the school Victory Gardens. Under Mrs. Moir's direction those students that were interested in Dramatics have given tl many programs for the service men. In fact the Senior Play cast really went on tour all over the island to give the play for the service men. In the Commercial Law classes the students learn to study and understand the military rules, regulations and the orders. In the Salesmanship classes pupils have been given as much practical information as possible so that they'll be able to fill the places left by the thousands of men being called up for military service. The typing classes have really done their share by typing miles and miles of reports for the Victory Corps, and for out-of-school o1'ganizations in connection with the war effort. The girls in the Vocational classes, because food conservation was and still is quite important, have been learning how to preserve fruits and vegetables that they didn't preserve before the war. Besides that the girls have made slippers for the Red Cross, supplies for Puumaile and in other words they've been ready every time they were needed. Down in the Physics classes, Mr. Villers has tried to give us as much practical information as we need to fit us better for military and other types of service, and the students that take Chem- istry have been taught many things about our everyday food that have made them more appre- ciative of our rich and varied menus. Anyone who has heard our band knows how terrific they are. They're really strictly solid. How wonderful it would be if they could play a concert for the Hilo High boys in the service! They've played for all kinds of war-inspired acti- vities. Every War Bond Drive program features the band, and all the Victory Corps programs do, too. But the musicians haven't limited themselves to school activities alone. They've also helped out in town whenever they were needed. The art classes under Mrs. Anita Carter have done a good job, too. They've made Christmas post cards and ash trays for Service Centers, painted posters for practically every drive or pro- gram the school has had and they've also made innumerable War stamp corsages and leis.
