Each morning they arrive by bus, in jalopies, on motor scooters, and in family sedans. Some ot them walk up Waianuenue Avenue, and some of them ride in sampans. They stand under the palms and in groups on the wide verandas talking about their homework, laughing, and joking. Above, the flag flutters in the trade wind, and Mauna Kea is remote and majestic. IUST CALL AT THE OFFICE! MH. CHUN MRS. PUTNAM MRS. oDA THE SOPHOMORE AT WORK From Hilo Intermediate, Hakalau School, Kalanaianiole School at Papaikou and Olaa School on the Volcano road, came the Sophomores, six hundred strong. Enthusiastic, ambitious, they entered the palm-lined campus of Hilo High for the first time, some with misgivings and halting step but all with determination to make the most of the school days in l94l. The boys in gay aloha shirts and sailor mokus, the girls wearing new pinafore dresses and matching ankle socks, talked of the forthcoming year. Already they had begun to count themselves Hilo High School students when the first bell of the year rang and sent them forward to their eight o'clock classes determined to account for themselves as ably as possible. After an interlude of fun during initiation and an initiation dance to round it off, the Sophomore got down to business with a lot to learn and not much experi- ence to go on. ln English class he began by learning the fundamentals of diagramming and the trick of conjugation. After the advent of the new broadcasting system lulius Caesar with Mark Anthony's Friends, Romans, countrymen was listened to with eager ears. ln social studies classes the youth of today learned how the youth of Babylon, Assyria, Greece, and Egypt dressed, studied, and lived in general. With an eye to the future the wise Soph takes a course in typing or perhaps he builds himself a desk in shop, or a girl may learn to sew or cook in the modern manner with the latest of electrical equipment. The shy Sophomore of September has changed into a shrewd and capable student able to take over new responsibilities when he returns to school next year as a Iunior. SOPHOMORE CLASS OFFICERS Learning the responsibilities and en- during the trials of political leaders, these promising newcomers are the Sophomore Class otiicersp clear thinking and popular Hideo Luna, our president . . . jolly Hiroshi Qlcamoto, vice-presi- dent . . . He is no longer a brow-beaten, book-laden Sophomore but through his steadfast work now has made a place for himself in the school. He plays a prominent part in the School Day, perhaps taking part in debates, and oratorical contests. A Iunior has opportunities to be in playsg or sports may be his line and he battles the foe for the glory of the Blue and Gold, winning his letter and the school's honor amidst the blare of the band and the cheers of the crowd. This same gay and informally dressed Iunior of Hilo High is not so one-sided that only play appeals to him. His studies also interest him and absorb his school hours. In Iunior history class he learns the story of his country and its great men. Although his ancestors may have been Chinese, Iapanese, Portuguese, Hawaiian or, not uncommonly, all five, he studies the American Way of govern- ment. ln this same history class he attains a respect for the institutions and ideals of Americanism. Elsewhere he dreams and drudges over commercial law, Thana- topsis, equations, or the number of elements in the universe. Outstanding students, scholastically speaking, who made the Honor Roll dur- ing the first semester are, front row: Kiyoko Tomioka, Yukie Oshiro, Kazuo Nishi- kawa, Walter Matsumoto, Hiroshi Nagami. Row two: Hifuo Iwano, Takashi Makinodan, Sung Bok Kim. Not in picture: Roger Carlsmith, Takuzo lnouye. JUNIOR CLASS OFFICERS Glorying in a new-found leader- ship, anticipating new adventures, and accepting the challenges of a new year, the Iuniors have proa- ressed under the leadership of President Takuzo Inouye, Vice President Nobuto Iinbo, Secretary Chieko Shiqekane, Treasurer Ay- ako Saqawa, and Representatives Tayeko Matayoshi and George Kajiwara. YOUNG 50 ,km SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Three years of diligent study and ex- perience have turned the apprehensive Sophomore, and the carefree and jolly lunior, to the successful Senior. Perhaps these years have developed even more, the officers and leaders of these classes. Upon their shoulders has been placed the burden of handling nearly all the social functions, the distribution of tick- ets, the management of the finances, and collecting of dues. This burden is heaviest on the shoulders of the Senior Class officers. For the second consecu- tive yearTsuneo Shiigi is president.Vice- President Shigelco Izumo has proven her- self a top-notch assistant to Tsuneo. Lea- trice Yamagata and Chizuko Miyao as Secretary and Treasurer are indispens- able. Equally successful are Mary Lou Crawford and lohn Ross as our repre- sentatives. Three long years, glory and honor, challenge and charge . . . three years and a lifetime of memories! ,,'.n Mp, 6 ..,.a giffmi THE SENIOR AT WORK Very busy, indeed, is the School Day of the Senior with the problems ot world economics and government, the poetry of Gray, Goldsmith, Pope, Milton, and Shakespeare and a touch of bookkeeping, Woodshop, or Spanish. The flag committee has the duty of officially opening and closing the School Day by raising and lowering Old Glory. The honor point group spent many of their free periods recording all honor points credited to students. The athletic program was planned, the cheer leaders chosen, and money was appropriated for these activities by the athletic council. Concerned with budgeting and the auditing of the treasurer's books was the finance committee. It was the duty of the property committee to give the trophies their annual shine, clear the bulletin boards and in general care for all school property. The new standing committees this year have been: printing, reception, good English, vocational informa- tion, planning, program, and debate. 99 : Wffg :Z ' -53 -wz sgg ggf, . 2? if A zqk fv ,, 1-51 2 zggvw. THE SUFFERING SOPH Initiation, one day in the year when the class hours are not overly stressed, is a riot of fun for the unlucky Soph and the initiating luniors, eager to avenge the loss of dignity suffered in their Sophomore year. In this year's initiation, husky boys turned overnight into blushing but not too dainty damsels. Shy and pretty tenth grade girls came in bright neckties and handlefbar mustaches. On these pages we show the weary way of the initiate. Anthony cuts as neat a figure as any in his girlish garb. Lloyd enjoys a free shine at the expense of Douglas as others wait their turn. Howard offers Eric a little encouragement as a small but determined Sophie shows how he'll hold that line tif and when he becomes a mighty Vikingl. Eric's display of legs is not at all ladylike. From the flagpole to the street, these girls, under the command of the merciless photographer, are preparing to roll a peanut. iw , ,ri J Nah.. .8 N I .
