In the foreground are the twen- ty-nine typewriters, upon which We fumblingly typed our first words. And standing in the center of our picture is Mrs. Lucille Pester, head of the Commercial Department, advisor for the Stinger and Waukeen and comforter for countless catastrophies that have occurred with those darn stencils! ,mr l Because of your devotion in all of these causes, and for your help in Senior Problems and Office Practice, the Waukeen Staff takes great pride in dedicating to you, our advisor, the 1958 WAUKEEN. This is the fourth annual you have helped get to press, Mrs. Pester, and we of the 1958 staff know we are with the other three staffs in saying a great big hearty, THANK YOU . Many loyal followers of Hilmar gridiron teams agreed that this was one of the best squads that has been produced in Hilmar. The most out- standing factor was the phenomenal play put on by the defensive team. They gave up an average ot 97 yards a game! The final statistics showed Hilmar had gained a total ol 2,762 yards during the season. The standouts in the line were Frank Salles, Terry McSweeney, Robert Rosa, Darwin Miller, Fred Figley, Robert Ramos, Bud Sorenson, and Don Borrelli. The ground attack was led by Toe Louro who had a spectacular 7.3 yard average and Cliff Brown who had a credible 5.2 average. Theron Pace led in the passing department with 568 yards. Brown passed for 309 yards also. Bill Smith, Wade Lamb, Dudley Peterson, Bob Olson, Tony Alameda, Henry Martig, Ioe Ferriera, Marvin Kindberg, Louro, Brown, and Pace were the main backtield men. The yellow-jackets placed tour players on the All- Conference Team, Terry McSweeney, Frank Salles, loe Louro, and Theron Pace. Pace was also selected as the Outstanding Back of the League. Except for some bad breaks and hard luck, it was felt that this year's team had the ability and potential to take the championship. Better luck is hoped for next year. By winning ll and losing 3 league games the team compiled the best record of any previous season. Cliff Brown, with his high scoring, sharp defensive play, and leadership abilities led the team throughout the season. One major asset of this championship squad was in the rebounding depart- ment. Dave Summerlot, Vern Bengtson, Terry McSweeney, and Robert Rosa, were the big men on the backboards averaging about 35 rebounds a game. The second important factor was Hilmar's shooting ability. Most of the shots were taken by Cliff Brown, Bob Olson, and Theron Pace. Brown had a l8.6 points a game average which topped the league, while Pace was the third highest scorer in the league with a 14.9 average. Brown set a league record for an individual in a single game by scoring 38 points against Newman. At the end of the season Brown was placed on the Valley All-Star Team. Pace was chosen to be on the All-Conference Team. The team was well-balanced with sharp shooting, strong rebounding, and good defensive play.
