Today: New And Unique The school year 1973-1974 proved to be one unlike any other and it affected international affairs as well as those of Hillwood High School. The Watergate Scandal dragged on as new evidence was submitted and then accidently erased. Agnew resigned as one of America's most controversial Vice Presidents and was quickly replaced by an unknown, Gerald Ford, who received the normal Gerald who? jokes. The situation in the Mid-East came to a head as war broke out. Kissinger, the new Secretary of State, was again a familiar figure at the negotiation tables as he helped settle the dispute. The oil embargo to the United States was the supposed cause of the energy crisis as heat in homes dropped to 680, the speed limit dropped to 55 miles per hour, and Daylight Savings Time made going to school in the dark a reality. Long lines and high prices were common at gas stations and trucks emptied the streets for awhile in protest. Even the annual White House Christmas tree was dimmed as America saw less of neon holidays. Kidnaps broke out in an epidemic headlined with J. Paul Getty lll and Patricia Hearst as ransoms became almost impossible to meet and threats became reality. Streakers on college campuses became prominent and plans of an April Foolsl White House streak were discussed to persuade Nixon to lay bare the naked truth about Watergate. Consumer income topped one trillion, the best seller was The Exorcist, the number one song was Killing Me Softly, Billie Jean King brought defeat to Bobby Riggs in the most talked about tennis match of the year and Hank Aaron hit the top when he broke Babe Ftuth's record. On the 2 other end of the ladder, America's world renown Bed Cross went broke and she also experienced a paper and wheat shortage. Talks of the end of the world fizzled with the Comet Kohoutek, and Jesus freaks came to save Nashville only to be arrested. Tragedy came to country music stars in the death of Tex Ritter and the murder of David Stringbean Akeman, whose death became one of the numbers which soared Nashville into the most murderous year in her history. Magic Touch massage parlor raids hit the news just as did the monumental achievement in the frequency switch of Channels 2 and 8 before hundreds of viewers. Hillwood was also watched this year by evaluators. The Senior Lounge was almost done away with but was regained and appeared again second semester. Two faces are gone however, not to reappear. Coaches Graves and Whitmon went on to higher administrative positions in other schools, at Hillwood's loss. The first student broadcasting system WHHS, was an attraction which will return as was the Senior Variety show's tour to Vanderbilt's Children Hospital. The PTSA Flea Market brought interested purchasers while 50's day brought V interesting, duck-tailed dressers. The Varsity Girls! Basketball team went to the District tournaments led by Dianne Frierson who, earlier in the year, broke Hillwood's scoring record. David Scott and Hunter Bogitsh were added to the elite list of state wrestling champions and with them brought honor to Hillwood. This year never has been before and never will be again, truly it was new and unique - this school year 1973-1974.
