Once or twice in a lifetime there comes along a teacher who commands the respect, admiration, and love of his students. Even less often comes along the teacher who so affects his students naturally and with no conscious effort to do so. The TOPPER Staff and the Hillwood Student Body, in recognition of such a unique individual, with pleasure and gratitude dedi- cate the 1967 TOPPER to Miss Lucile Mason. adi sila ce RO a aan yy . 7 Miss Mason began at Hillwood as an eighth grade core teacher. Since then she has taught seventh and eighth grade arithmetic, as well as first and second year algebra. Through the years she has encouraged her students to do well both in the classroom and in regional and statewide competition, and the great majority of Hillwood's success in such contests is di- rectly attributable to her encouragement and assis- tance. The Student Council not only had its begin- ning, but also has grown in influence and activity, under Miss Mason's unselfish and indefatigable guidance. What will really stay with us, however, is not an itemized tabulation of her inestimable contributions to us all, but rather a keen sense of the spirit she generates. Somehow we will all try harder, search longer, and stand prouder for having lived and worked with Miss Mason.

Nineteen hundred and sixty-seven was a year unique in itself. The story of Hillwood High School added another long chapter, and one that will not be fully written for “many years, for the story is a story of people and what they did and learned. The band leamed to play old songs in new ways. Western Kentucky lent us their enthusiastic fight song. The foot- i A ball team floundered about in search of the victory it so rae! . hay well deserved. The boys fought valiantly, and not with- 3 . out reward, on the basketball court, while the girls moved on relentlessly toward victory and possible cham- pionship. The student body reached an unprecedented enrollment, necessitating the erection and use of portable b | ed es ' Mi ‘yk ee gee sy) classrooms. It ye a af was the year to be remembered for what it taught the . x , eae! characters of the story. It taught them that people were Ae hs real and to be valued ontheir own merits. It taught them that victory and defeat were both transient causes, here today but gone tomorrow. 1967 taught the characters in $ its story, above all, to be proud of themselves and of ! each other. It is the vision of their standing proud in the wake of the past and on the brink of the future that will remain indelibly in our memories.
