The story of Hillwood High School added another long chapter, and one that will not be fully written for “many years, for the story is a story of people and what they did and learned. The band leamed to play old songs in new ways. Western Kentucky lent us their enthusiastic fight song. The foot- i A ball team floundered about in search of the victory it so rae! . hay well deserved. The boys fought valiantly, and not with- 3 . out reward, on the basketball court, while the girls moved on relentlessly toward victory and possible cham- pionship. The student body reached an unprecedented enrollment, necessitating the erection and use of portable b | ed es ' Mi ‘yk ee gee sy) classrooms. The faculty also increased in number, al- , an : Beiter though marriage hastened the retirement of one and - gladdened the hearts of all. ey, or: He ; - But 1967 was not unique because of events that will dim a in our memories and require pictures to recall them. It ye a af was the year to be remembered for what it taught the . x , eae! _ characters of the story. It taught them that people were Ae hs real and to be valued ontheir own merits. It taught them that victory and defeat were both transient causes, here today but gone tomorrow. 1967 taught the characters in $ its story, above all, to be proud of themselves and of ! each other. It is the vision of their standing proud in the wake of the past and on the brink of the future that will remain indelibly in our memories. Even less often comes along the teacher who so affects his students naturally and with no conscious effort to do so. The TOPPER Staff and the Hillwood Student Body, in recognition of such a unique individual, with pleasure and gratitude dedi- cate the 1967 TOPPER to Miss Lucile Mason. adi sila ce RO a aan yy . 7 Miss Mason began at Hillwood as an eighth grade core teacher. Since then she has taught seventh and eighth grade arithmetic, as well as first and second year algebra. Through the years she has encouraged her students to do well both in the classroom and in regional and statewide competition, and the great majority of Hillwood's success in such contests is di- rectly attributable to her encouragement and assis- tance. The Student Council not only had its begin- ning, but also has grown in influence and activity, under Miss Mason's unselfish and indefatigable guidance. What will really stay with us, however, is not an itemized tabulation of her inestimable contributions to us all, but rather a keen sense of the spirit she generates. Somehow we will all try harder, search longer, and stand prouder for having lived and worked with Miss Mason. oe Bs hie “ he pee: oui VE ee 0 12 e? This year the English De- partment conducted two special classes—one an Advanced Place- ment course for college-bound seniors, and the other an experi- mental team-teaching group. Miss Henegar taught the former, and Mrs, Arfken, Mr. Wakefield, and Mrs. Thigpen led the latter. Each year the Math Department selects repre- sentatives from algebra, geometry, and ad- vanced senior math to compete in local, regional, and statewide competition. The overal l strength of the department is attested to each year by the great number of contest winners from our school. This year for the first time students enrolled in high school mathe- matics also had the opportunity to compete in a nationwide examination designed to provide for the teacher and the student a criterion for comparing the standard of his work with that throughout the country. | 95 Social Studies Department ' Mrs. Mary Ann Joseph Mrs, Katherine Mrs. Jeanne William Miss Linda James Charles Mrs. Elizabeth Abernathy Durham Fanning Hinton Kennedy Kinnard McDonald McKinney Reed The most popular elective subjects at Hillwood are the social studies. This fact is attributable to the variety of course offerings, all of which are vibrant and contemporary in nature. Eurasian and American histories are taught in the seventh and eighth grades, and civics, world history, American history, government, economics, sociology, and psychology are offered to high school students. Emphasis is placed upon the relationships existing between the men and movements of history and their contemporary counterparts. The Foreign Language Department at Hillwood offers to high school students the opportunity to pursue Latin, French, and Spanish for four years each. French and Spanish are also offered to eighth grade students on a limited basis. The Foreign Language Department encourages the students partici- pating in its programs to further their cultural exploration by ex- tending the classroom experience to club activities. The cheers bring courage and hope to the team. Win or lose, the cheers are a source of encourage- ment to the pride in the school. Positions of honor belong to the cheerleaders. When they cheer, they have a feeling of warmth inthe yells because they love the school and the school spirit which they help generate. The cheerleaders may well be referred to as the crutch of all sports events. The Topper Cheerleaders for 1966-67 were led by Kay Henry, Captain. Carole Nixon The Varsity Basketball Team was coached by Mr. Jinnette and Mr. Zapp, and it was composed of five juniors and five sophomores. The boys performed to the best of their ability against seasoned opposition, Captain Neil Ander- son led the determined team to victory over Joelton, but defeat was theirs in other games. If experience is the key, the basketball team of next year should have a better record. 154 , Pam Smith ee Linda Wilson Row one: Manager Robert Lipman, Neil Anderson, Kenny Miller, Barry Bryant, Lee Moss, Dave Lankford, Manager Bill Merrick. The girls'team was composed of sixteen seventh, eighth and ninth graders. Coached by Mr. Pryor, the girls posted victories in their first two clashes against Donelson and Central and lost to Hillsboro. They snapped back to win the next eight games, winning over Glencliff, Washington, Litton, Overton and Lipscomb. The season's record was one of which we are proud, and their skill should prove helpful as they move on to join varsity teams. 156 Dinka Tatum Row one: Lee Terry, Joy Inman, Ellen Kendall, Nancy Nancy, Barge, Beth Bandy, Cathy Curtis, Brenda |Choppin, Vicki Ross, Jane Terry, Lee Castles, Cindy Tarkington, manager; Shari Follis, manager; Kathy ‘Suiter, Susan Hollins. The dynamic team began the season with wins over Donelson and Central, and their teams did not fail. They posted six more victories by defeating Hillsboro, Glen- cliff, McMurray, Lipscomb, Litton and Overton. Their ninth opponent was the mighty Washington Freshman Team, which had a three year winning streak. The Toppers fell, but were back in form for their next game in which they rolled over Bellevue. Coached by Mr. Bandy, the fourteen man team had one of the finest records ever accumulated by a Hillwood basketball team. nanan: Row one: Charlie Cox, Bill Lashlee, Joey Runion, Jeff Hunter, Mike Regan, Webb Brewer, Steve Jones, Chuck ‘Boerger, Johnny McCabe, Keller Chapman. Partial credit for such spirited activity and loyal devotion, while due in large measure to the spontaneous reaction of the student body itself, must be attributed to the combined efforts and cooperation of the administration, the cheer- leaders, the athletic teams and the student council. In an all-out endeavor to engender enthusiasm for the Topper's first season in the new AA Western Division, the Men's Club sponsored a highly successful and well-received Watermelo: Cut, featuring the introduction of varsity and freshman football players, members of thi cheerleading squad, and officers of the Men's Club. This idea was initiated to bring about greater school spirit in the students. The first day was designated as Peng TER “JeyVere Pe e588. tr - Hello Day. Students and faculty members wore heart-shaped name tags. The next day was entitled Extra-Nice Day. Valentines ordered by the boys Monday were delivered to the girls during the classes. On Wednesday, everyone participated in Appreciation Day. '' The students taught the classes as teachers put on an assembly. 'Reverse Day was held on Thursday. This time the boys received singing Valentines from the girls. Another feature of this day was the girls waiting on the boys, by carrying books, lunch trays, and everything else. The final day was known as ''Topper Day. Everyone was to be quiet in the halls and lunchroom, and then raise the roof'' at the pep rally. Although there was some noise in the halls, the day cer- tainly served its purpose as the cheerleaders led the stu- dent body in a very enthusiastic pep rally that afternoon. The week was formally ended at the combo following the basketball game Friday night. However, due to the overwhelming support of the teachers and students, it is hoped that Heart Week will become a part of Hillwood's tradition. Assemblies Under the direction of Lynne Myer, Hillwood's assemblies were better than ever. Throughout the year, we had many different kinds of performances, including speakers, con- certs, and a one-act play put on by the Forensic Depart- ment. The annual Christmas Assembly was highlighted by the singing of Christmas carols by the choir. The presentation of the baskets for needy families was held also. This worthwhile project, sponsored every year by the Student Council, helps underprivileged families enjoy a Merry Christmas. Colonel Huffman spoke tothe Senior High concerning the patriotism of young Americans during the Veterans Day assembly. Later in the year, a demonstration was put on for the boys by Fisher Body Company. Many of the inno- vations in car designing were shown, including a demon- stration of flexible glass. On Wednesday of Heart Week, an assembly was given to demonstrate the talents of various faculty members. The acts included Mrs. Reed playing the piano; Mrs. Crowell accompanying Miss Daniel, who sang two selections; and 168 two groups of the men teachers. Mr. Kennedy, Mr. Zapp, Mr. Durham, Mr. Pryor, and Mr. Shumaker dedicated a song to the Senior Class. Another group composed of Mr. McDonald, Mr. Jinnette, Mr. McKinney, and Mr. Pryor formed a combo. However, the women teachers were not to be outdone. Mrs. Blevins, Mrs. Daves, Mrs. Arfken, and Mrs. Thigpen joined together in an original song to the cafeteria, ridiculing the food. This assembly was highlighted by the Hillwood Jazz Band's rendition of the fight song, Go Toppers! Although they had only practiced together a few months, this group gave an excellent performance to the student body. The Forensic Club also demonstrated their talents to the student body in a one-act play entitled, ''The Refuge, by Paul McCoy. This play made its way to the finals of the Metro One Act Play Contest before losing. The cast of the play included Lynne Meyer, Tempe Marsh, Claire Frierson, Myron Schmidt, and Jeff Wray. National Honor Society Installation On March 14, the National Honor Society held its annual induction ceremony in a senior high assem- bly. The new members were selected on the basis of scholarship and leadership. A new feature was added this year, as ribbons were presented to thirty-six freshmen and sophomores with high grade point averages. The purpose of this award is both to recognize their accomplishments and to encourage underclassmen to strive toward superior grades. In his final address to the student body, Mr. Hicks challenged the students to work up to their full capabilities, never wasting or abusing their talents. He used the examples of Frog Williams and Ronnie Medlin, both former Hillwood students who were motivated to excel in their chosen fields. Newly-selected members of the National Honor Society: Frances Marianne Barge Martin Norman Buchman Ellen Barrie Corenswet Marion Sue Cox Richard Gordon Heimberg Terri Lynn Hiers Barbara Edwards Paryarik 170 In their annual spring assembly, the Hillwood Chapter of the National Beta Club tapped thirty-one students for membership in this honorary service organization. These juniors, who were chosen on the basis of scholarship and leadership, represent the finest members of their class. Craig McConnell, Beta Club treasurer, presented a track and field chart to Mr. Dickerson. It will serve as a permanent recognition for those who excelled in gymnastics. Another innovation was the Beta Club Certificates which were awarded various students for excellence in a particular activity. The Beta Club vice-president, Carolyn Cox, announced that a scholar- ship will be given at awards night to a non-Beta senior whose out- standing talents are to be developed more fully in college. Later that night, the students cheered for the football team against the Franklin Rebels. 174 The highlight of the activities was the presentation of the homecoming queen and her court. The Queen, Linda Wilson was crowned by Captain Bruce Bancroft as the band played selections from ''The Sound of Music. Fol- lowing the game was the combo sponsored by the Student Council. Of these, approximately fifteen thousand are named finalists. This hig h honor was accorded two Hillwood seniors this year, Carolyn Cox and Melody Duggins. Another thirty-five to forty thousand receive Letters of Commen- dation. Hillwood students receiving this honor were Janice Johnson, Overton Lea, David King, and Jeff Wray. Although Melody has attended Hill- wood only two years, she has made many contributions to the school. This year she served as president of the Liaison Francaise, and as Organi- zations Editor of the TOPPER. After graduation, she will attend Furman University. Carolynhas also participated in many activities during her six years at Hill- wood. This year she was the Editor of the TOPPER, vice-president of the Beta Club, and president of the J.C.L. Agnes Scott College in Atlanta, Georgia, is Carolyn's college choice. Although the basketball team took up a great deal of time, Janice served as president of the National Honor Society. Community activities are of special interest to Overton. As a junior, he was the president of the Young Republicans Club. David has always been active in school events. He served as the Junior Class president and is a member of the Key Club. Forensics was Jeff's chief interest this year; he was the president of the Forensic Club. These students are to be highly commended for this achievement. 179 iiltiiean: NY A Backward Glance We HG FRANCES CAROLYN ADAMS National Honor Society 3,4; Junior Classi- cal League 1, 2; El Circulo Espanol 2, 3, 4; N.E.D.T.
