Senior Class History As we open our memory book to page one, wc look back into the year 1 1943, and find ourselves awkward little freshmen. Our class, wif Mr. Ott as the advisor, elected the following officers: President . ., ,Paul Buehrle Vice-President . Charles Yoder Secretary , , Dorothy Steinly Treasurer . , ,,,. . . , . ,Mary Moyer Turning' to page two, we find our summer vacation over and our sophomo year beginning. Charles Yoder Bravo! Our destination reached at least, and our little book holds priceless memories that none of us will ever forget. So I decided to fly East in my private plane Charlie Yoder's Sky Demon. Flying into New York City for some necessary supplies, I was surprised to see a girl who looked very familiar. I saw her to be Betty Grasse, who informed me she was now a hostess for Southwest Airlines. She said Betty Hinkle was also a hostess with the T. W. A. After refueling I left Glendale and started flying East. After landing at Philadelphia, I was surprised to see Elmer Ott checking the engine on an airliner. I talked with him and during the con- versation we decided to look up some of our old friends. First on our list was Ed Tice, who was now athletic coach at Northeast High School. Ed informed us that the Philadelphia Phils, with whom Jim Moyer was the star short-stop, were playing a championship game that afternoon. Ed obtained permission to go with us from the principal, who we recognized as Paul Buehrle. After talking to Paul for a short time we called a cab and we were greatly surprised to find Richard Johnson driving it. He informed us that business was thriving and that he enjoyed his work. Upon arriving at the entrance of Shibe Park we discovered among the other sport enthusiasts were Mr. and Mrs. George Clemens fthe former Grace Moyerl. George told us he owned a large chicken farm in Hilltown Township. Seeing the large gathering we all went into the grandstand to get the choice seats. As we took our seats the umpire yelled Play Ball. The game proved to be one of the most interesting ball games I have ever witnessed. Jim turned out to be the hero of the day, having, hit a triple to drive home the winning run and Win the National League Championship. After finding our way to the dressing room, we waited for Jim to come out. He was greatly surprised to see us, and to make the reunion complete he asked us all to join him at dinner. Jim told us he was taking us to one of the best restaurants in the city which was owned by Dr. William Novicki. On the way to dinner we passed a beauty salon and Ed told me it was owned by Shirley'Spanninger and that Doris Mahoney was one of her employees. We decided to stop a few minutes to talk to them, we asked about some of the other students and Shirley informed us that Mildred Kulp and Beth Ann Loux were also in the hair dressing business in a distant city. Shirley also told us that Mary Moyer was head nurse in one of the hospitals and that Marion Stover and Dot Werner were also nurses, but since we did not have much time left we did not have time to see any of these girls. Once in the restaurant we were surprised to find Lois Mood as a waitress. She told us that Bill had several Doctor offices and that the restaurant was just one ofhis sidelines. After finishing our most delicious meal Ed and I decided to fly to the Doylestown Airport and visit the rest of our former classmates in that vicinity. When we landed at the airport we found Ted Koljeski working on different airplanes, so we ask him to check up on ours while we were gone. We then borrowed a car and Ed suggested we visit the farms of Earl Wismer and Ed Ede. When we got to Ed's farm we found Merrill Yoder was working on his farm making cabinets. We had a long talk together and Merrill informed us Dorothy Barndt and Louise Loux were both married and lived up state. He also told us that Doris Moyer and Ray Harley were married and had a big farm. 17 We checked over our list of classmates and discovered that we had founf out what they were all doing and seen all the ones who were in the vicinitl so we decided to fly back to our work. I took Ed back to his coaching at Higl School and I went back to my work at Republic Aircraft to think about th pleasant time I had talking to all my former Hilltown High School classmate: 15 15 SQ: IMAGINE 1. Shirley Spanninger not talking. 2. Charles Yoder not knowing the answers. 3. Doris and Ray not going together. 4. Jim Moyer driving at a reasonable speed. 5. A handful of heirs met on a stormy night in a weird Creepy Castle, to hear the reading of an eccentric will, and to hunt for the precious star-sapphire. Bridget, the comical Irish housekeeper, warned all to leave, for anybody who remained all night in Creepy Castle-Dies Laughing! The heirs refused to budge-and then ghastly things started happening. The place was fairly littered with spooks-including a phantom cat! Portraits sobbed real salt tears! Typewriters were manipulated by invisible hands. The ghost girl gurgled and groaned, The devil-monster clanked his chains! Somebody disappeared- somebody was strangled--somebody Dies Laughing. And at the end we learn not a soul is actually murdered--it's all a hoax which was being played on a Certain Party to cure a phobia, and how that Certain Party turned the tables on his tormentors left the audience in stitches! Truly, You'll Die Laughing! was the most spine-tingling farce, the most rib-tickling thriller we've come across since Hector was a pint-sized pup. Z? The following members took part: Marie Yoder, Arlene Drace, Dorothy Bishop, Charlotte Yoder, LaRue Maurer, and Edna Yoder, Frank Grasse, William Glick, Samuel Stover, and Richard Burkhardt. It was a long, hard struggle to make the year book successful, but it was a privilege to make this dedication to the senior class. 22 SOPHOMORE CLASS Sophomore Class Report With much chattering and chuckling, fifty-two bright-eyed sophomores assembled on the first day of school. Immediately the class became organized under its advisor, Miss Grasse, by electing the following officers. --President .. . , . Donald Wismer Vice-President Charlotte Spanninger Secretary . . , , . . Leon Iles This year we were all looking forward to that certain day in October when the Freshman class was on the receiving end of these hilarious traditional initiations, and we could sit back and enjoy it. One of the first activities of our class was a skating party at Menlo Park, which was well attended and enjoyed by all. Another feature of the year was the magazine d1'ive and what a pleasure it was to eat the ice cream prizes awarded for being tops in salesmanship. We are also looking forward to a trip to Shibe Park in Philadelphia to see a professional baseball game. When basketball season approached, we had Jeryl Haberle, Kenneth Weisel, Leon Iles, and Marvin Landis striving for key positions on the squad. These fellows also showed their skill on the baseball team. Charlotte Spanninger, Dorothy Smith, Lorraine Parisi were the girls representing our class in basketball and baseball. Since our class is well repre- sented in sports, the outlook on future winning teams is promising. Since we have been in the same room for the past two years, we are working hard to move into the next-the Junior Room. :sz FRESHMAN CLASS i l 4 Freshman Class Report We were rather shaky when prep:1rations for the Hallowe'en Party began, for it was time for the annual initiations. After the horrified looks had passed from our faces and the party ended, we considered ourselves members of the student body. Activities during the year consisted of a roller skating party at Menlo Park. also a few of our boys and girls have tried their luck at basketball and baseball. We are all working for the honor of receiving a school letter. During the year the following' class officers were chosen with Mr. Weisel as the advisor: President .. . The work of the patrolnien consists of carrying' messages back and forth to teachers and keeping order in the buses. At the end of the school term two patrolmen are chosen to go on a tour to Washington. These two were chosen by the entire school. Charlotte Spanningel and Harley Moyer were the two who were chosen. The A. A. A. Club sponsors the trip for the patrolmen. SHOP CLUB Each Monday at one o'elock the Shop Club meets at the agricultural building under the experienced supervision of Mr. Frisbie, the agriculture teacher. Since lumber could not be obtained the boys were taught to tie various knots and to use them properly, Some of the boys practiced welding, while the others learned to sharpen different tools such as saws and drills. ti '2 HOME ECONOMICS Standing-D. The Home Economics Department of this year is again under the leader- ship of Miss Jeanne Riebel. At the beginning of the first semester we preserved foods for use in the cafeteria. After completing this activity we began making clothing for our wardrobes, such as dresses, blouses, skirts, housecoats, and pajamas. We also made the girls' basketball suits and the cheer leading outfits of which we are very proud. The cafeteria was opened the first week of December, under the leadership of Mrs. Alice Cassel, with an average of eighty-five lunches served daily at twenty cents each. We started our second semester by studying housing and home furnishings, nutrition, foods, and good grooming. A number of field trips were taken to various industries in the community. The senior, junior and sophomore classes were very fortunate in going to the Pennsylvania State Fair, at Harrisburg. This trip was enjoyed by everyone. 33 AGRICULTURE Standing'-J. Moyer, E. Ede, E. Ott, T. Kolojeski, K. Beer Sitting- R. Johnson, E. Wismer, C. Frisbie The popularity of vocational agriculture among our boys is well indicated by the enrollment of forty-two students in this course. Under the supervision of Mr. Frisbie, the boys had a very successful year in shop and class work which leads to better farmers of tomorrow. In order to gain full credit each member of the agriculture course must have a project. He can choose a project like livestock, or garden and farm improvement. Our class was present at the Allentown fair and Harrisburg farm show where they saw many different types of equipment and exhibits which they enjoyed. This year the agriculture course joined the Future Farmers of America Organization on May 7, 1946. The boys were sworn into the club by the Emmaus Chapter. The purpose of the club is to bring the boys together and improve the Agriculture building and school grounds. 34 SPCJRTS W 1 C 0,55 3 42. gf' ani? Landis Hilltown's spirit, as displayed through the vigorous cheerleading of a small group of six girls, vanquished many of our rivals. New cheers as well as new motions for the old ones were popular whenever used. New style uniforms, blue jumpers and gold blouses, added greatly to the appearance and displayed an attractive combination. Elise Pischl, Joan Derstine, Elva Landis, and Lorraine Schmell working together with Alice Donnelly and Myrtle Smith, former cheerleaders, made the halls ring with cheers such as: Give-a-yeklg Lucky Starlg Zip-a-di-do-da, and urged the teams onward to a victorious season. 36 GIRLS' BASKETBALL The girls had their first basketball practice in November at Third Street in Perkasie with Hfteen girls anxious to display their ability and school spirit. Doris Moyer was elected our captain. This spirit was shown when they won their game with Doylestown High School. The girls tried their best to win the other games, but it seemed their opponents had the same idea. The high scorers for the year were Doris Moyer and Arlene Drace. The team looked most attractive clad in their new tunics, which the Home Economics Department made this year. Our opponents included Buckingham, Sell-Perk, Doylestown, Souderton, Lansdale Business School and Hatfield. 37 BOYS' BASKETBALL The Boys' Basketball season opened with twenty-iive eager basketball players who elected Paul Buehrle and lid Ticc as co-captains. With the skillful coaching' of Mr. Yoder the team had a successful season. Their playing spirit was shown when they won three out of four games with Nockamixon and defeated Lansdale Business School 23-14. Against Hat- field they showed their fighting spirit but lost 54-39, with Ed Tice, the high scorer, making twenty-two points. Other opponents which defeated Hilltown included Buckingham, Sell-Perk, Doylestown and Souderton. Ed Tice was high scorer for the team with sixty-seven points. Paul Buehrle second highest with forty-six points and Frank Grass third highest with forty-four points. The building of asphalt courts for basketball on the high school grounds has been a decided asset in developing future teams. 38 GIRLS' BASEBALL ' Our baseball season opened for the year '47, with the return of twenty girls from last year. The girls are looking forward to a successful season under the coaching of Miss Riebel. Although quite a few of our star players graduated last year, we expect to have a victorious team. We play many of the same schools as we do in basketball. The school has rented the field below the boys' baseball diamond as a diamond for the girls. This will enable the girls to do all the practicing they wish. 1 Identification of Baby Pictures Page 16-First row, top to bottom: Merrill Yoder, Betty Grasse, Charles Yoderg middle row: Miss Rieble, Mr. Yoderg right side, top to bottom: Roy Harley, Paul Buehrle, Mary Moyer. The pitching staff has been built up witlf the return of Elmer Ott and last year's players, Ray Harley, Jerry Haberle and Leon Iles. Among the infielders are Sam Stover with the Moyer brothers cover- ing the left side, and Buehrle, Weisel and Glick the right side 'of the infield. Among the outfielders are Novicki, Beer, Tice and some sophomores and fresh- men who haven't displayed their skill as yet. With this squad Hilltown should have an excellent season. Our baseball diamond has been enlarged by the purchasing of more land. This has not only increased the size of our playing field but it has improved the landscape and general appearance of our play- ground.
