'66 Published by the Associated Student HIIIIUP HIGH SCHIIIII Chula Vista, California Janice Liebeck, Editor Volume VII Body Nv- I Rx 1 Q i 'Qin 2 As a mosaic is comprised of an orderly arrange- ment of parts composed into a unified whole, so too may we, the present generation, be described as a vast mosaic, A single member of our genera- tion alone and unexposed to the numerous influ- ences of today is similar to a solitary piece of the mosaic, broken and meaningless by itself. When this structure, however, produces a certain pattern or design, it acquires a special appeal, Likewise, our generation needs varied ingredients to trans- form it into a generation on the go, a phrase applied frequently to the younger set. To portray this similarity between the components of a mosaic and a generation, we have chosen as this yeor's theme, A Mosaic Of A Generation On The Go. 3 lluest for Knowledge Acting as the framework for the mosaic is the administration, the faculty and our own student leaders, These people serve as the impetus to set our generation in motion. By answering questions, expressing personal views, and promoting inquisi- tiveness among students, the administration aids us in developing our own ideas and beliefs. ln addition to school leaders, we have also selected as patterns young men and women in other facets of life as pace setters for this fast moving genera- tion on the go. ln the political spotlight, such fig- ures as Ted Kennedy and John Lindsey are spoken of often among the younger generation, leaders in the world of music, novels, and entertainment in- clude Bob Dylan, J. D, Salinger, and Herb Alpert. Personalities in both school and worldly life with drive and initiative maintain the tempo of this enthusiastic generation on the go. After the framework has been erected, the mosaic requires fundamental materials for its groundwork. Academics furnish these mosaic properties at Hill- top. ln the classroom, each individual becomes more informed in all aspects of life and thus un- ravels many answers to his own questions. Through responsiveness to this academic aura and the pursuit of questions of meaningful existence, we expose our mental alertness, curiosity, and aware- ness, characteristics of a generation on the go. This generation's participation in rallies, speeches, and political affairs vividly demonstrates these characteristics, Thus, another segment of the mo- saic is formed. Mui Satisfied in Classrooms As the mosaic must have color to attain aesthetic appeal, our viva- cious generation must be furnished with some diversion from the men- tal strains of classroom work, The brilliant and vibrant colors of the broken fragments ot the mosaic are symbolic ot the variety of activities available at Hilltop. Athletics, or- ganizations, and other miscellane- ous activities play a vital role in providing this color for campus life. The desire for challenge and adven- ture, a feature of this generation on the go, is satisfied by these di- versified activities. 6 Colorful Activities Enhance Student life Released from the seriousness of mental activity, this zesty new generation shifts its attention to young ideas and fads, Zany clothes, dances, and entertainment mark this new breed. Creating sen- sations with the younger crowd in the fashion world are such favorites as granny dresses, boots, bell bottom slacks, and paisley ties, To match this wild and exciting look is the entertainment of the current generation. The frug, jerk, and watusi orig- inated by this eager generation are danced to the music ofthe Rolling Stones, Sonny 8 Cher, and the Accents. Athletically, surfing portrays the perfect picture of a generation in motion, while, in the entertainment field, the familiar names of James Bond, the Beatles, and Batman have also left their impression on the younger set, Finally, the go-go craze has attacked almost everyone in some way and is very definitely a trait of this generation on the go. MW E i Vmz WM W'?ZW19W n ' zmwffwfrw tWWWWWWM?2MW ZWiL .www Although the foundation, basic materials, and sparkling and dazzling colors are now present, one element is absent-the artists. At Hilltop, each member of the student body, as a designer, con- tributes his own part to our school and benefits accordingly from campus life. Each person of the Sophomore, Junior and Senior Classes has his own artistic function in the realm of campus life. The seniors, the so-called big wheels of the school, can communicate to the underclassmen the thousands of adventures experienced, and the juniors and sophomores can profit from their knowledge and achievements, Likewise, through experimentation, questioning, and endless searching, underclassmen prove themselves to be valuable members of the student body. As in the medium of mosaics, the quality and intricacy of the final design is depen- dent upon the people who paint this permanent picture, so the unique and individualistic aspira- tions of each member of this provocative genera- tion adds variety and interest to the spectacular and impressive pattern finally formed. These artists personify themselves as they construct a likeness of a generation on the go. Mosaic K Generation Un The Ge Symbolic of the energy, vigor, and zeal ot this active generation, the mosaic is now completed. The mural we behold is representative of new innovations in art forms and the intermingling of the diverse characteristics of an animated genera- tion, Because each piece of the mosaic in its own perspective forms the entire portrait, the image depicted is one ot vitality, spirit, and action, Finally, we witness A Mosaic Ot A Generation On The Go. llnderclassmen 94 Seniors I2 Sports 140 Student life 62 Organizations 176 Faculty 124 Advertising 202 Just as the artist is to the painting, so are the students to the Hilltop Mosaic. They are the instruments which create the activities and accom- plishments of the school. And by creating these activities, the students also formulate the qualities of the generation on the go. The Seniors are the most experienced of the artists. We have had three years to develop our talents and the training proves very valuable as we prepare to enter the adult world. Sen- iors exemplify many ofthe qualities of an artist as we create the lite of the school. We have the initiative to be- gin a project and the patience to com- plete it successfully. We have the creativity to come up with new ac- tivities. We are beginning to have the insight necessary to see problems and correct them. .-W.-5 -s-i -f-, . -c.- - .... .mmlimlso-'ni-nm:m'+M'ssm Seniors Pain ft 2 r ir, ti 12 4 1 .v he Future 5, aw iw... at A v ,lim ,gli-9-S ,E M ,Y Qs And, finally, we have the overall en- thusiasm and interest necessary to complete our functions as artists in the Hilltop Mosaic. As we fulfill the qualifications of the artists, we also create the characteris- tics of the generation onthe go. These some qualities of initiative, creativity, insight, and enthusiasm can be ap- plied to our generationas we actively live from day to day. Seniors are con- stantly on the go, decorating for dances, rushing to Variety Show re- hearsal, working out afffootball prac- tice, or just plain studying. Through all of these various activities created by the Seniors the vibrant qualities of our generation on the go emerge, As Seniors prepare to leave high school, we look back on the accom- plishments of three years, and realize that, as we have been growing, we have added a great deal to the Hilltop Mosaic. 52 fd YQ W 5 Wi ei 2 F 5 Y l Fx Q Hz Q z 1 Qi' 5 A Q E l 3? Many hours were spent in cre- ating their drills, These precision routines, performed to many popular tunes, astounded the crowds as well as entertained them. Although they are a non-com- petitive unit in parades, they made each trip with the other Marching Lancers. At each function they con- tinually exhibited excellent performances and are well-deserving of recognition. if It?wat?Qiggezizmimfi 7 qggiziifimiitcdgw. ,Qi fiwM,fii., . fiszwi ef evmimswfwiwagisfwfzwrzzfi ,, ,W A,,. .i.,M,..5,,Y Z A ,,,, W. The Marching Lancers worked diligently outside of school preparing their weekly eye-catching performance for the spectators at both basketball and football half- times. Her flowing blond hair and sparkling blue eyes radiated her beauty to those around her. Danned in her pale pink crepe empire gown with a shocking pink bodice, her face 90 glowed as she was named Home- coming Queen for l965. Tears of happiness trickled down her face as she graciously received her crown and traditional red roses. Around campus, Charlyne always has a friendly smile for everyone. She is a straight A student and has been an active member of CSF. She is also an enthusiastic member of the Latin Club, S Club, and Eru- dites. Charlyne was truly an elegant Homecoming Queen in every sense of the word, Her beauty and charm gracefully marked the close of an- other Homecoming year. Homecoming 1965 Homecoming this year brought about the usual thrills and excitement with the alumni assembly and tea, football game, and the Homecoming Dance, Graduate students were seen by everyone, touring their old campus and visiting their former teachers. Although the game with Castle Park was a loss for Hilltop, Homecoming itself was not hindered, The excitement was still there as students and alumni anxiously awaited the Homecoming Dance the following night. The Lancers enjoyed themselves thoroughly as they danced to the music of The Cen- turys. The end of the dance also brought to a close Homecoming l965, one surely to be remembered. Here, final plans are made with Mrs. Peace and Mrs. Guy for the day's schedule. 126 Mr. Fred . Nlahone Principal Through the years, the one thing that remains unchanged is the affable manner of our Principal, Fred N. Mahoney. His genial smile and friendly greeting are always present as he mingles with the student body. Mr. Mahoney's appearance at the Homecoming Assembly and other campus activities adds a traditional note of warmth to our campus. His interest in student affairs and his sense of propriety have a definite in- fluence on the character of our school. Although administrative duties are de- manding, Mr. Mahoney always finds time to know personally many of the students. A leader in community activi- ties, our Principal sets a shining ex- ample for all. Administration Aids Students and Facult . ldf' ' i' Mr. Geyer assumes a watchful pose during lunch hour Mr. Mahoney, Mr, Geyer, and Mrs. Hartzell often work together in deciding school poli- cies. They also spend many hours outside their office attending sports activities, banquets, scholarship programs, and meetings around the community. A football game would not occur without the support of Mrs. Hartzell, decked in Lancer green, Mr. Geyer down on the field pushing the boys on to victory, and Mr. Mahoney watching intently from his birds-eye-view in the press box, We are truly fortunate to have such an enthusiastic administration. 127 WD' Vice-Principals Set Standards R. RUBERT GEYER BUYS' VICE-PRINCIPAL As Vice-Principal, Mr. Robert Geyer devotes much of his time to the promotion of athletic activities. ln addition to this, he administers reliable counsel- ing and demonstrates firmness when necessary. ln- stilling his own sense of fair play into the boys, he always has time to lend a guiding hand. RS. GLADYS HARTZELL GlRlS' VICE-PRINCIPAL Vice-Principal Gladys I-lartzell's personal interest in her students is immediately apparent. Her heartfelt concern over the problems of each girl is shown in her understanding manner. In serving as CSF Adviser, Mrs. l-lartzell gives valu- able guidance to those interested in scholarships. The spirited bus ride to the Escondido football game, and the crushing de- feat that we handed the Cougars is still a fresh thought to be enjoyed. The disappointment of the Chula Vista games is reduced by the basketball team's going to the CIF game. The vitality and devotion necessary to bounce back after a loss with renewed spirit truly characterizes the genera- tion on the go. The sports activities at Hilltop also instill the desired quality of good sportsmanship within each student. This building of character is a basic purpose of athletics, and we mature as we learn to accept defeat gracefully. The first activity on the busy agenda of the Girls' League this year was the Big-Little Sister Picnic held in the lunch area on the first day of school. Each sophomore girl was introduced to our campus by a senior or junior Big Sister. Featured at the Girls' League Fall Fashion Show were the latest fashions from the Broadway Department Store modeled by girls from our campus. The Girls' League sold mums at Homecoming to help finance their projects. A large crowd of pleased fathers especial- ly enjoyed listening to Paul Lowe of the Charger Football Team, who spoke at the Dad-Daughter Chili Supper. All Girls Week which included a breakfast and Mr. Irresistible Contest was fun for girls and boys alike. Considered by many students to be the highlight of this year's Girls' League activities, was the Girls' League Semi-Formal. The theme of this year's dance was Mistletoe Magic. Due to the hard work and planning of the officers, the adviser, Mrs. Hartzell, and class representa- tives, the many activities were very successful.
