I js , MIIME IS The days and weeks seem to have flown by as we look back on the 1964 school year. Whether we were Sopho- mores, Juniors, or Seniors, the year was composed of incidents that will re- main forever in our memories. As Hill- toppers leaf through the IDYLL, the pic- tures will recall times of admiration, relaxation, and tradition, that is, IDOL, IDLE, and IDYLL MOMENTS. Playing on our emotions, IDOL MO- MENTS remind us of those occasions filled with happiness and ecstacy when we were in the limelight, as was Mr. Clarke when he presented a one man singing performance. Or, of the des- pair we felt as we passed the library and acknowledged in mournful silence the flag flying at half-mast after the death of one of our IDOLS - the President of the United States. IDLE MOMENTS include those times of forced relaxation and anticipation as the J.V. football team, along with the spectators, awaited the execution of the next play. IDYLL MOMENTS bring re- collections of the pride that we had for Hilltop as we viewed the front of our home away from home around which most of our activities were centered. They also summon to mind the mirth and enjoyment of the traditional field events of Tournament Day and the mud-slopped faculty members. Remembering those IDOL, IDLE, and IDYLL MOMENTS creates other emo- tions that can stem only from the high school years spent at Hilltop. 1 Dill Ulf MIIMIE TS DYll With every passing day another segment is added to the history of Hilltop High School, and all of the students who are encompassed by its activities are the authors. In the chapter entitled 1964 there are three divisions: fly the events that are classified as IDOL MO- MENTS, C27 those IDLE MOMENTS, and C35 those classified as IDYLL MOMENTS. Because this account of the passage of the year is written by students, most of the anecdotes concern them, but the stabilizing effect of the presence of the administration can always be felt. Even stuffy writers recognize the presence of IDOLS and the MOMENTS when these people bask in their good fortune. The Homecoming Queen and her court are certainly to be counted among the most widely honored of all IDOLS produced by Hilltop. Other ones that cannot be forgotten are the J.V. Cheerleaders and their frolicking attitude that adds to the spirit present at all J.V. games. Waiting patiently for the end sheet picture of the annual to be taken, the band, Lancerettes and specialty groups listen for directions from their IDOLS, the band director and Lancerette captain. IDLE MOMENTS, necessary after term papers, critical essays, and debates were due, were often spent at the sports events in which Hill- top's teams participated. Members of the teams were able to enjoy moments of relaxa- tion, especially when something other than the action on the field momentarily caught their eye. Included within the many IDYLL MOMENTS cited by HiIltop's historians, the traditionally outstanding half-times presented by Hilltop's marching units are among the most important. Offered as a review, or resume', of the IDOL, IDLE, and IDYLL MOMENTS contained in Hill- top's history, l964, the authors wish to as- sure everyone that these are only a few of the innumerable moments. This spirit that can't be extinguished is what keeps the name Lancers smudge-free. Hill- toppers can stand up proudly when answering the question, What school are you from? The intelligence, con- trol, and fun that the students exemp- Iify is reflected in their IDOL, IDLE, and IDYLL MOMENTS. Kid stuff is never allowed to ruin the activities, rather, they are supported by those who understand that the greatest enjoyment comes from that which is motivated by mature, sophisti- cated people. This mature attitude is recognized in their choice of IDOLS and the MOMENTS in which they choose to pay homage to those placed on the pedestals of public acclaim. The pleasures gleaned through partici- The newly formed Sophomore boys' club, Squires, sells doughnuts to help swell their treasury. pation in Hilltop's IDLE MOMENTS clearly indicate that the presence of sophisticates doesn't put a clamp on merriment and joviality. Even the success and continuance of the IDYLL MOMENTS, those centered around tradition, are attributed to the dignity of manner that is possessed by the students who are thoughtful enough not to restrict or spoil the chances for student activities in the future. Because of these characteristics ex- pressed by Lancers, IDOL, IDLE, and IDYLL MOMENTS will be remembered with pleasure for many years. ...Ei The IDOL of all members of the football team, Mr. Sisk, takes a MOMENT to present the players for the big Home- coming Game with Castle Park. I S3 'I ' Talented majorettes enjoy an IDLE MOMENT of relaxa- tion during a strenuous half-time practice. Future IDYLL MOMENTS. such as winning a trophy for excellence, are created in behind the scenes rehearsals. Dill Ulf MIIIVIIE IS DYLL All aspects of life at Hilltop are included in IDOL, IDLE, and IDYLL MOMENTS. Often an incident can be categorized into more than one of the divisions. The pep band is sym- bolic of this. As it performs at a basketball game, the members become IDOLS for those inspiring members of the band who want to join this elite group of top band members. The pep band also has its IDLE MOMENTS as it relaxes and watches the thrill and ex- citement of a Hilltop basketball game. The pep band is a traditional feature of home basketball games and therein lie its IDYLL MOMENTS. The same MOMENTS, IDOL, IDLE, and IDYLL, can also be applied to classroom ac- tivity, such as in one of Mr. Haught's math classes. Without the direction of the administration, little would be done to improve the physical and mental state and outlook of those who pass through this establish- ment of learning. The capable direction of the administration, which provided Hilltop's IDOLSQ the acquired traditions estab- lished by the administration, furnishing Hilltop's IDYLLSQ and their recognition of needed mo- ments of relaxation as Hilltop's IDLE MOMENTS made our three- year stay at Hilltop mean much in memory's eye. Standing out prominently in our memories of Hilltop's administra- tion will always be the IDOL, IDYLL, and IDLE MOMENTS. The images captured on this page will help us remember such symbolic events. IDOL MOMENTS, treas- ured forever because of the help of our understanding coun- selors on the first day of school and the dignity of the office of ASB. President at the most im- portant assembly of the year, will never be forgotten. IDYLL MO- MENTS, or moments of tradition, will be kept fresh through remem- brances of our principal's Home- coming hat and A.S.B. election posters that exemplify the tradi- tional competition for trust and honor of ASB. offices. Of course. there were also pleasantly relaxed IDLE MOMENTS reflected by fac- ulty cheering on their co-workers during a Tournament Day compe- tition and three important people resting from the strenuous labors of keeping Hilltop's marching units the best in the area. Each student has had some connection with at least one facet of the administration: each student will he forever grateful for its kind assistance. MR. FRED N. MAHUNIEY PRI CIPAL Mr. Fred Mahoney, characterized by his affable smile and his friendly and warm personality, has experienced another fruitful year at Hilltop. Through his trust and inspiration, he encourages admirable conduct among HilItop's stu- dent body. Although directing the faculty and per- forming administrative duties take up most of his time, he always has time to get to know many of the Lancers. He always has a kind word or sincere greeting for everyone. All Lancers will remember him as that warm-hearted gentleman with short white hair and twinkling eyes who ex- emplified the traditions ofa true Lancer. Since an idol is one to be admired, Hill- top students in years to come, will look back upon Mr. Mahoney as a leader of dignity, integrity, warmth, and kind- ness. MRS. lil DYS HARTZELL GIRlS' VICE-PRI CIPAL Hilltop High School owes much to Mrs. Gladys Hartzell, a very capable and in- dustrious woman. Charged with the responsibility of coun- seling the Lancer girls, lVlrs. Hartzell has helped them become better citizens through her understanding guidance. As Girls' League advisor, she has given the girls much of her time. Her leader- ship has helped in making their activi- ties this year the most successful in the school's history. Devoting great energy to the California Scholastic Federation, Nlrs. Hartzell has also aided this organization in its activities. This energy has also been exhibited in her work with the scholarship program. Taking an interest in eachSenior's need of college advice, lVlrs. Hartzell has helped many to make the right decision about college, as well as helping them obtain needed scholarships. R. RUBIERT GEYER BUYS' VICE-PRINCIPAL Assisting the Lancer boys in their schol- arship and athletic endeavors is lVlr. Robert Geyer's major task as vice-prin- cipal each year. lVlr. Geyer sets up specific qualifica- tions for all boys participating in any athletic activities. Although he is a very busy man, he always has time to watch his boys in their fight for victory at games. A part of lVlr. Geyer's character is his sense of fairness and humor in dealing with the Lancer boys. ln encouraging high standards, he demonstrates a strong firmness whenever necessary. His calmness in meeting responsibility is clearly shown in his efficient admin- istration of the vice-principal's office. 'J MK ,..,,,,. , ,VV S A W I X ,WW . ,V iff u , ,,..,, .. -. . These men spend many hours working together making plans to better our schools. As a result of their efforts, under the leadership of Mr. Rindone, our district has come to be known as one of the best in San Diego County. MR. JOSEPH RINDONE, JR. Superintendent Hilltop's faculty, the guiding instrument, has proved exceptional. Terry has shown outstanding ability in scholarship and also in extracurricular activities throughout his high school years. During Terry's three years of hjgh school, he has played varsity football, baseball, and bas- ketball. He is Vice-President of Hilltop's Key Club and the Lance Sports Editor. This year Terry received the Optimist Club's citizenship award and the Elks Foundation Youth Leader- ship award for the Sweetwater Union High School District. ln order to thank everyone for such a success- ful year, Terry sends a special message to the student body. I would like to express my ap- preciation to all those who have helped make this year an outstanding one, and one which l will surely remember for the rest of my life. llS.B. VICE-PRIESIIJIE T P T BURUNDA Serving next to the President this year was Vice-President Pat Borunda. Much credit is given to him in helping make this year a very successful one. A.S.B. Vice-President must know everything that is going on. Pat was ready to assist the Presi- dent with his duties in case of conflicting circumstances. Hilltop's Vice-President is an active member of the N.F.L. and the C.S.F. He is also a member of Hilltop's Key Club and has participated in varsity swimming and wrestling. This Lancer has exemplified ideal conduct, for which all Lancers strive, during his year as A.S.B. Vice-President. .S.B. SECRET RY LYNN IW SHIT This year's A.S.B. Secretary was always on the go. There were minutes to be taken, corre- spondence to be written, and certain records to be filed. As busy as she was with all her other activities, Lynn was always ready to take care of her responsibilities. During Lynn's years at Hilltop, she has partici- pated in many activities. She has served as a Senator, a Girls' League representative, a mem- ber of Lancerettes for three years and a Lieu- tenant this year. Lynn has shown much interest in school activi- ties and in her position as A.S.B. Secretary. L i HOW THE WEST W S l0ST Hilltop's gym doors were opened on March 12 and 13 in order to allow the public to view the tremendously successful '64 all-school Variety Show. How the West Was Lost, was definitely one of the best pro- ductions in Hilltop's five years of Variety Shows. Under the capable direction of Susan Rockar and the faculty advisors, Mr. William Demos and Mr. Charles Schanke, the show seemed quite professional. Over one hundred students were involved in the performance, including the stage band, vocal ensemble, talent acts, cast, and production crew. During the four weeks of exhausting rehear- sal preceding the performance, each participant devoted time, effort and energy to produce the best show yet. The script, written by Senior Pat Stirnweiss, told a western but def- initely humorous tale of talent. The story began when Hal Smith was shot through the hade. Lester questioned the alibis of all suspects and finally proved himself worthy of the Marshall's badge when he dis- covered Mac Millan was the killer. 51135, , . 2 un, 5 Er T i Q ill W? Never again will there be anything like the Senior year. Much hard work and late hours were routine requirements for Seniors to main- tain their places as the leaders of Hilltop. The purposeful class of 1964 filled these established posi- tions and made the class one that will not easily be forgotten. Some IDOL, IDYLL, and IDLE MO- MENTS of the Senior year have been captured in these photo- graphs. IDOL MOMENTS typified by a Senior boy wrestling with a little boy at the Senate Christmas Party, and the Seniors rising to salute the flag, black-draped in memory of the Seniors' greatest Idol, the late President, will never be forgotten. IDYLL MOMENTS symbolized by the traditional Sen- ior basketball game and the an- nual Toys for Tots drive made the year seem typically Senior. Just as everyone has moments of re- laxation. so did the Class of 1964. IDLE MOMENTS. including just arriving at school and the football team resting on the Senior lawn at a surprise lunch pep assembly complete the picture of our Senior year. All Seniors can never forget the joys, sorrows, privileges and work of our last year: all under- classmen look forward to becom- ing a part of the memorable Senior year. ..-t. -. . .l-- ...slam As Mr. Green watches the Class of '64 receive their diplomas, he will be deeply proud of the class that he has so efficiently and unselfishly directed. He has worked with this class for three years, watching them grow and change. The Senior year has proved to be the most chal- lenging with preparing for the numerous Senior activi- ties, and the big job of obtaining information for Sen- 36 iors about colleges, college tests, and job opportunities, but Mr. Green's jovial personality has eased some of the tension. His jokes and friendly smile made us feel secure at needed times. lVlr. Green will be remembered by each Senior with admiration, respect, and affection. Because of his guid- ance the Class of '64 will be prepared to face the future with confidence. The rigors of leading the Senior class demand high- ly capable persons. The Class of '64 elected these people: Don Nlontell, Presidentg Russ Alsobrook, Vice-Presidentg Gail Dillion, Secretaryg and Nancy Kuebler, Treasurer. They eagerly accepted the chal- lenge and filled their positions well. The officers conducted Senior assemblies and aided in the success of all Senior activities. The Senior class, in cooperation with the Lance Staff, presented the successful '64 Variety Show. ln keeping with the traditions and responsibilities of being Seniors, the Class of '64 has been outstanding. These officers, with the enthusiastic support of every Senior, have made this class one of unparal- leled accomplishmentg an idol for incoming classes. i CARL BANDELIN NORMA BENDICKSON KAREN BROWN II.S.E. IIEE MEMBERS One of the highest academic honors that can be achieved at Hilltop High is to receive the California Scholarship Federation Sealbearer's Award. The Class of '64 had thirty-three students who accomplished this feat. The Sealbearer's Award is given only to those Seniors who have attained membership in C.S.F. for four semesters, including one semester in their Senior year. This award in itself is a great honor but it will never be ade- quate compensation for the time and effort put in so willingly by these Seniors. The future holds much for these award win- ners and there will be numerous rewards for them because of their superior achievements. Constantly striving to better Hilltop's name, students involved in activities have brought back numerous awards in forensics, journalism, and music. Unceasing dedication is required for members of the band, pep groups and, of course, the energetic clubsg personal sat- isfaction and genial memories are the rewards of participation in activities. The activities' capa- ble leaders, who supplied Hilltop's IDOLSQ important Lancer traditions preserved by the activities, furn- ishing Hilltop's IDYLLSQ and the relaxation found at greater pla- teaus of enjoyment, comprising Hilltop's lDLE MOMENTS, provid- ed an outlet for extra energy and also insured Hilltop's outstanding reputation. Symbolizing remembrances of Hilltop's activities are the IDOL, IDYLL, and IDLE MOMENTS on this page. IDOL MOMENTS, cap- tured by precise halftime routines and cheering for the team as led by an enthusiastic pep leader, will provide enjoyable flash-backs. IDYLL MOMENTS, emphasized through traditional pep club posters and doughnut sales so typical of all campus organiza- tions, will never be forgotten. And finally, IDLE MOMENTS, exempli- fied by enthralled students relax- ing at the Hootenanny, and rest- ing after struggling with a tuba in a pep band performance, will keep fresh memories of Hilltop's glory. Anyone involved will treas- ure forever the memories of amusement and achievement de- rived through participation in any one of the fabulous activities of 1964. Always thoughtful of oth- ers, Rosie said her first thought was how proud her parents would be. Denning a jade-green brocade floor-length formal accented with a scalloped bodice, Rosie was greeted enthusiastically. The voices she led as a cheer- leader were now directed at her. This attractive blonde has cer- tainly done her share in school activities. Active in the senate for two years, she served as Junior Varsity Cheerleader in her junior year and capably filled the position of Varsity Cheerleader this year. Homecoming spectators will long remember how queenly Rosie enhanced the excitement of Homecoming. The queen and her lovely court are captured with candid expressions of great joy. Rosie is seen at the height of her happiness, expressing joy, as most women do, with tears. The queen and her court are seen as they begin their reign over the Homecoming Dance. At- tracting many admirers, they lived up to their characteristics of charm and beauty. HUMIEIIUNII li 1963 PRI CESS SH Y E Sparkling Shayne Schuller abounded in excite- ment as she took her place in the Homecoming Court. Her radiance was enhanced by her pale turquoise formal with a pearl bodice. Being spotlighted was not new to Shayne who has been in numerous activities around school. A class officer for two years, and Junior Varsity Cheerleader in her junior year, Shayne also served this year as Head Varsity Cheerleader. l PRI CESS P M Perky Pam Bellevan made a lovely princess on the evening of Homecoming. Wearing a pink silk organza floor-length gown, the glow on Pam's face was evidence of her happiness. Being a girl with many interests, she has serv- ed as a Girls' League Representative and Lancerette in past years and this year as alter- nate Varsity Songleader. Hilltop's athletes certainly toed the mark in these respects and then showed outstanding sportsmanship when they faced a few disappoint- ments. Although they did not win lVletro League championships in some sports, Hilltop's athletes are admired by all Lancers as outstand- ing symbols of IDOL, IDYLL, and IDLE lVlOlVlENTS. Typical moments include those cap- tured in these photographs. IDYLL MOMENTS will be kept fresh through remem- brances of the traditional success of our wrestling team and the tradi- tional hand shaking before a game. Going into each game fighting, the Lancers never lost faith or let their spirits be dampened. Although they can only boast of three victories, Mt. At the end of the sea- son, Frank Fernandez, Joe Ruenzel, Bob Beckwith, Dave Lindsay, and Dave Gray were among the outstanding players. Frank Fernandez is number 14. As for the Spartan, his number is up. The Lancers went down the hill to play with the little school across town. During the first quarter, the only score was via a Frank Fernandez run. ln the second quarter, Chula Vista scored a touchdown and then ran for the conversion. They led at the end of the first half by a score of 7-6. ln the second half, Hill- top kicked off, but the Chula deep men couldn't find the handle to the ball. Frank Fernan- dez struck back with a pass to Greg Gary to make the score 18-14, Hilltop's favor. Once more Hilltop was unable to tally the extra point. With 30 seconds left to play, Chula Vista's Mike Anderson threw the game clincher to Wayne Gire. Mike Bair accounted for the final point, and the Spartans topped the Lancers 21-18. Rudy Castro. The Hilltoppers topped the Trojans to the delight of the Lancer grads. Neither the Lancer offense nor the defense showed any mercy toward the visiting Trojans. Hilltop jumped to a 7-O lead in the opening minutes of the game. From then on, it was a one-sided game. Nothing that Castle Park put on the field was able to break through the Lancer line. Neither were they able to assemble anything strong enough to stop the Lan- cers. The Homecoming Game was a complete success, as we romped to a 26-O victory over the Castle Park Trojans. Fernandez plowed through the line for the extra point, and the score was 19-13. A 19-yard pass play from Fernandez to McCarthy tied up the score, and the conversion put Hilltop in the lead 20-19. ln the final minutes, Sweetwater's Steve Bacon caught a deflected pass in the end zone to sew up the game. Their activities are numerous and the effects of their labors are reflected every- where. Aspiring to reach high goals is not uncommon, but actually working to attain these ideals is in- frequent. HilItop's underclassmen, however, accepted this challenge and never ceased to convey IDOL, IDYLL, and IDLE MOMENTS to Hill- top's repertoire of memories. Depicting the most typical remem- brances of underclassmen's efforts are the IDOL, IDYLL, and IDLE MOMENTS captured on this page. IDOL MOMENTS, represented by buglers commencing the daily salute to the flag of our nation and bewildered Sophomores remaining in awe of their new surroundings, are unforgettable attributes of un- derclassmen glory. Typifying IDYLL MOMENTS are the traditions of participation in student government elections and having class pictures taken. Yet, even the most diligent of workers can still have his IDLE MOMENTS: relaxing on the grass between buildings at lunch, and of course, trying to cat-nap during class. The sum of these moments is certainly a rightful indication of underclassmen success. , it 7-1 l 4. .Y President BRUCE CAMERON Secretary SHARON TAKAMOT0 UNIURS The school year 1963-64 was a mem- orable one forthe Junior class. EPIl0l3 E school term has now eclho with hidden mi es. The havetecoiwe like fal- separate and dismal from those so familiar to students. The lively and quick tempo of student life has diminished to a bare lonely beat. A slow, walk through the barren halls or a peek through the closed windows captures the atmosphere now sur- rounding the deserted campus. Life merely main- tains existence until the time comes again for noisy and excited students to swarm over the school grounds. The still podium representing the teachers' bat- - Yup.-QQ., F. tleground, the closed history book full of the past, the silent movies that rapidly have become a ma- jor device for teaching, and the pleasant smell- ing gym locker rooms all remind us of the knowledge and experiences that we have gained in one short year. But we have gained much more than academic knowledge. We have learned a lit- tle better, one of the most important things- getting along with our fellow man. As next September arrives, we realize that new IDOLS will be seen and some of the old ones will be gone. As we travel life's multitude of walks, each going our IDLE or ambitious way, our paths may never meet again. The IDYLL term's lease is ended-but friendship, experiences, and knowledge will be reborn next fall. ll aff' Q J VL , WI 1 swf, 321 5231 E' ij' E, v' 3, 1 I 'ff ff lg , L-5 . flid ,V r t!
