Because of their out- standing contributions to the school in scholarship, citizenship, and leadership, these fourteen Seniors have been selected by both their fellow classmates and their teachers, as recipients of this award. Continued membership in the ASB after graduation is assured to these students by the gold card they receive. This card entitles them to admission, free ot charge, to all home games and activities at Hilltop High School. Just as this area represents the oldest section of San Diego, so it is that the seniors of '62 are the pioneer class of Hilltop. As sophomores, they aided their fellow Lancers in setting the many customs and traditions of the school. As juniors, they promoted school spirit and finally as seniors, they accepted their diploma proudly with the feeling of accomplishment. Editors: Mimi Richards Ronda Rustvold Wm-,ge . The Senior Class officers were faced with endless duties which proved necessary in carrying out the true purpose and meaning of the Class of '62. Under the direction of Vaughan Benson, president, Bob Hargrove, vice-president, Betts Williams, secretary, and Ruth Dale, treasurer, the Senior Class handled such activities as the box social, the Look magazine sale drive, and the Senior prom. Work never seemed to end for these busy leaders. Perhaps their biggest job was the collection of senior dues, which were used for the Senior banquet, gift, and various other functions during the year. Vaughan, Bob, Betts, and Ruth saw to it that the various committees were organized to take care of the announcements, Senior gift, ditch day, and banquet. Members of the Class of '62 were selected to serve on these committees and the entire graduating class pitched in to make this one of the finest groups that Hilltop will ever have. The Class of '62 was extremely fortunate to have as their counselor, Mr. William Padelford. Through his patience and expert guidance, the Seniors have realized the full extent of their education and gained a better understanding of the future. Mr, Padelford, in addition to working with the senior class officers, made valuable suggestions to students who were interested in attending college or vocational schools. By administering the various achievement tests, he was able to find a future program of study, suited to the student's abilities and interests. Each senior holds a sincere affection in his heart for this wonderful man. 55 5, M-453964. ,rx , Aw 'F' ' fi 1 if ,, , A Y :L M , 5 Y- f' Q? 34 LINDA BARBER .IONI BLANTON . , x...- 4 gi l l ,N A 1 ' LE L , , , Q A PAULA FARRINGTON Q 4 A A A W Y RUTH DALE w '- I . For the last time the Senior Class gathers on their beloved campus. They have been close companions for three years, and many times have sung their Alma Mater, but the phrase AlI Hail to Hilltop High has never had as full a meaning as it does on this occasion. The line they form to receive their diploma tem- porarily unites them, but forever separates them, except in the memories they share. As the long sought symbols of achievement are placed in the Seniors' hands, their high school days pass through their minds in reverie. To each graduate, certain events loom larger than others in the memory fabric, and those material treasures of high school life will spark the recol- lection. With the combined efforts of Bob Proctor, Jim Chew, and Don Parish the Lancers went all the way to beat the Mustangs 19-6. Long hours of sum- mer practice and high spirits payed off as the Lancer squad worked to- gether in their first show of season- al power. Jim Chew fights his way through the Mustang line for a short gain while Mike Rodgers and Jim Fischer help back the offensive effort. With the odds 5 to l against him, Joe Stetser is brought down by a pursuing Mariner after a l4 yard gain. MAR VISTA MARKS USE THAT ARM! Jim Chew straight-arms a Mariner while Craig Higgs leads the way around the right end. l FA Glll-' 0Pl-'NIR Richard Hathaway takes on two Mariners to stop 'em cold in their tracks. Following up the play is a herd of hardy Lancers. Mar Vista dealt the Hilltop squad their first league defeat, ourscoring them 27-O. The Mariner backfield accounted for most of the yardage gained against, the Lancers. The Mariners hit hard and fast throughout the game. They scored on a 53 yard drive only minutes into the game to put the Lancers in the hole 7-O. But the Lancers after being scored on again by the Mariners, managed their moment of glory by holding the pigskin for l6 plays, and in the process took four first downs. This strong drive was soon ended as the Mariners intercepted a pass on their own IO yard line, and hence after, controlled the ball through most of the contest. 5 mq,L Vi as , Bob Proctor squeezes past a Red Devil while Dick Saffer aces out a couple of Sweetwater men to back up the play. 132 In their second league game of the season the Sweetwater Red Devils turned back the Lancers by a score of 27-6. Hilltop's gridiron men held the ball for the rest of the quarter and came to a climax with o run made by Denny Scull, good for six points. ln their fight toward the uprights the Lancers cov- ered a distance of 99 yards, which was the greatest drive Hilltop had all year. ..- -in-r Joe Stetser kicks yardage, as Cra up his heels for more Lancer ig Higgs and D'on Wilkinson watch the action. COME AND GET 'EMY Just about the whole Lancer team turns out to stop the Spartans LANCFRS AND SPARTANS CLASH THE BOOT'S BACK! After the annual Chula Vista vs. Hilltop game, the boot has returned to H.H.S. for another year. The strong Spar- tan team went to a 34-O win over the fighting Lancers. The Chula Vistans had control of the ball most of the game and scored at least once in every quarter. The Lancers neverthe- less gave the Spartans a run for their money. On one of the best Lancer plays Craig Higgs received a pass from quarterback Joe Stetser and went all the way to hit pay dirt for the Lancers. But as luck would have it, a flag was called on the play and the T.D. was nullified. l STOP THAT SPARTANH Bob Proctor gets set to bring down a Chula Vistan who's getting too close for comfort. Baseball team should show great improvement over last year's five and eight league record. The Lancer J.V. Team will have an eighteen gamer schedule with ten of these games being played on the Lancers' home field. The competition at the different positions has been strong tough. Although the team has lost several days of practice cause of the bad weather, the players have still shown great provement in batting and defensive play. With the backing of the student body, the J.V. The 1962 Varsity Golf Squad enters the year's competition with a veteran squad of five, lettermen from the 1961 Metro Championship team, Though favored to win the league, this year's team foces the toughest competition a Lancer squad has ever had to surmount. A new league alignment adds Coronado and Oceanside, both fine golf teams, to the always-tough Metro League. However, with such Lettermen as Dave Gibson, Steve Johnson, Jack Kent, Pete Moore, Ron Yarbrough, and with many new players, the Lancers' 1962 Varsity Golf Team should win Hilltop High School its third straight champion- ship and be a major contender for the regional crown. Also these underclassmen are beginning to realize the unending possibilities which await them in their future years of learning. The citizens of San Diego are anticipating the rapid growth in their city and they eagerly watch the construction of each building as it nears completion. n Editors: Sandra Bandelin Judy Bush Christine Hoover Ellen Torrance T? l6O QQ .- Under the direction of Linda Thornton, president, Susie Bell, secretary, and Judy Bush, treasurer, the Class of '63 has successfully completed another year at Hilltop. ln addition to selling Data Subject Guides, the juniors worked diligently on plans for the Junior-Senior Prom. The determination of these Lancers paid off, as they and their senior guests danc- ed the night away on March 30, in the Hilltop Gymna- sium. A student's junior year is a stepping stone from teen- age dreams to realization of responsibility, which is a very important asset in to- day's world. The Junior Class officers had the job guiding their fellow students into one of the most significant years of their lives-their senior year. Mr. Livermore, Junior Class Counselor, has spent many hours helping students solve their various problems of the pres- ent and future. Under his outstanding guidance, the Class of '63 has done a great job in carry- ing out school traditions. A warm vote of appreciation and thanks is extended to him for all the help he has given to our class. NIV, arf L.Q,. 'A 4 'haf As counselor of the 600 Sophomores, Mr. John Green had the difficult, yet rewarding, task of starting the youngest Lancers on their journey to realms of higher learning. By conducting private interviews with students, he was able to note their future vocational desires and the special interests which would affect their decisions. When Mr. Green watches his Sophomores accept the coveted diplomas in l964, he will feel very proud inside, and justly so, because he will have given them the type of guidance which every young person needs before entering the world of adulthood. i i Terry Maple, Kay Ochi, and Shayne Schuller, as offi- cers of the Sophomore class, found themselves faced with a very important task. As the elected leaders, they had to carry on the traditional Lancer spirit which had been so enthusiastically developed by the classes before them. For the Class of '64, this did not prove to be difficult. Their enrollment passed the 600 mark, and the enthu- siasm was just as high. Terry, Kay, and Shayne, in addition to collecting Sophomore dues, sponsored several dances during the year with the help of the Sophomore council. i 1 0 l ax lx may ,A i is A il. xg? Each student on campus has shared in the varied and rewarding activities which have caused this year to pass so swiftly. Before greeting the summer, let's look back a moment. There's the gym. Practice, competition, and new records have occurred there. The echo of applause at concerts, variety shows, and vocal productions still linger. From the science labs come sounds . . . odors . . . and a great deal of knowledge. Momentarily we thought we heard the stirring strains of Americans We! . . . endless practice for those music lovers, but how rewarding! The relaxed break at lunch and hours of research and study in the library live in our memories. The learning experiences in our classes are still vivid. , Now the campus has become quiet. The final curtain is falling on another senior class. Hilltop ceases to witness the excitement and confusion of its busy students. It will harbor only the memo- ries of a wonderful year which is forever gone and yet very much a part of our cherished dreams. Similarly, at evening, San Diego is forced to give a lingering good-bye to its daily activities and bustling metropolis. Yet, she too, will stop for a rnomentand glance over her beautiful shore, eyeing the majesticlsunset and the gentle rock of the many crafts as they are l for another night.. ++wamW,.,.e:mM., cu ,L .. . . ,
