From the surrounding areas we came, eager to become a part of the BLACK HORNET FAMILY . It was only a year before when we were still a part of Whitted, Shepard and other surround- ing Junior High Schools. The students at Shepard had a tremendous task ahead of them. This being only their first year, they had to build the base for which the foundation was to be laid. Sharon King led the student body in the Panther's den. Along with Sharon giving her support were Wandra Hill, vice-president; Anna Long, secretary; Joyce Keith, assistant secretary; and Regina Robinson, parliamentarian. The brains of the Panther's den were in action as Cynthia Crawford presided as president of the Shepard National Honor Society. The members were Jacqueline Waddell, Cynthia Manuel, Jacqueline Puryear, Sharon King, Joyce Keith, Anna Long, Elizabeth Johnson, Wandra Hill, Sara Spann, Regina Robinson, Virginia Barnette, and Marlo Barden. The Panther's den rocked with the spirited sportsmanship distributed by Ellis Allen, Leon Swinton, Anderson Hinton, Gerald Holeman, Dehavelington Fozard, Allen Fletcher, Lonnie Miles, and Charles Whitted. Dust was stirred by the outstanding relays of Charles Whitted, Derrick Taylor, Anderson Hin- ton, and Dehavelington Fozard. The cheers were echoed by head cheerleader Virginia Barnette. Giving Virginia support were Janice Mack, Donnie Bradley, Genevieve Hayes, and Carolyn Fowler. The throne of Shepard Junior High was well represented by Jennifer Mack as Miss Shepard and Elizabeth Johnson and Jacqueline Waddell as attendants. Shepard was very proud to be the first Junior High School to publish a yearbook. The staff included Jacqueline Waddell, editor-in-chief; Linda Jeffers, co-editor; Deborah Thorpe, layout editor; Joyce Keith, publicity manager; Marlo Barden, art editor; and Vanessa Cooke, business. The graduating class of '67 was led by Regina Robinson, president; Virginia Barnette, vice president; Janie Joyner, secretary; Deborah Thorpe, assistant secretary; Derrick Taylor, treasurer; Cynthia Reade, parliamentarian; Ellis Allen and Marlo Barden, chairmen of the program committee who suc- cessfully brought the class through an exciting and memorable year. The Vikings of Whitted Junior High took a giant step in September of '67 and proved to be worthy of the love and admiration of their followers. The Vikings injected and motivated the community with its outstanding athletic records. The true men of grit were Willie Walker and Randolph Peacock as Co- Captain, Other members of the team were Dwight Barnes, Randolph Small, Fred Jones, RoyLee Jones, Danny Bell, Arthur Smith, Gilbert Parker, Anthony Benton, Kenneth Noble, Samuel Bethea, Larry Williams, Ronald McMillian, General Cheek, and Savoye Gaines as trainer. The undefeated and un- conquerable Viking basketball team was led by Johnny Russell, Willie Watson, Ellis Davis, Larry Wil- liams, and Larry Duncan as the starting five. Other valuable players were Dwight Barnes, Arthur Smith, and Otis Scott. Yes, we were faster than a speeding bullet, more powerful than a locomotive and able to leap a hurdle with a single bound. The Viking ship rocked with victories obtained by Arthur Smith, Ran- dolph Small, Isaih Singletary, Demetrius Singletary, Albert Cooper, Albert Starr, Tony Mitchell, Ellis Davis, Savoye Gaines, Robert Jones, and Marcilen Gunn. Otis Scott, Dwight Barnes, Carl Harrison, Willie Walker, Ronald McMillian, Sharon Corbitt, Marian Wright, and Blondie Shepard swung the rack- ets of success over the nets in tennis. Vibrations shook the gym as the melodious voic es of Linda Crews, Ruth Cooper, Felicia Farrar, Betty Badgett, Marsha Moore, Gwendolyn Amos, and Sylvia Bulter bel- lowed cheers in the traditional Viking manner. The Viking band made many outstanding contributions in city, state, and national competitions. Not only did the Viking ship have well rounded men but beautiful young ladies as well. Patricia Barnes, Miss Whitted and Brenda Shepard, Special Attendant, were only two of the beautiful creatures that filled Whitted's halls with sunshine. As the doors close on the class of '67 we can see Heidi Jo Sampon leading Shannon Freeman, June Williams, Janette Harrington, Deborah Sowell, Carl Harrison, Deborah Woodward, Erma Wilder, Deborah Leathers, Barbara Coleman, -Franklin Melvin, Treaver Berdaux, and Fletcher Rivers on the road to success in intellectual accomplishments. So, from the surrounding areas we came to Hillside High to become a part of the Black Hornet Family . The Panthers and Vikings of '67 joined Brains, Brawn, and Beauty to become baby hornets, @averi io live'and to learn. Dwight Barnes, president of the Sophomore class of '68 along with Michael Jenkins, vice president; Anna Long, secretary; Deborah Sowell, assistant secretary; Tony Mitchell, treasurer; and Patricia Barnes, parliamentarian initiated the gleam and talent which was needed to overcome our first mile- stone. We as baby hornets had to prove ourselves worthy and this we did. Miss Patricia Barnes did her part as the first Sophomore Queen with Wandra Hill and Janie Joyner sharing her throne. The Junior-Senior Prom would not have been complete without the assistance ofthe hosts and hostesses of '68 Ellis Allen, Earl Brewer, Danny Bell, Dwight Barnes, Albert Halfacre, Michael Jenkins, Marcilen Gunn, Gerald Holeman, June Williams, Janetta Harrington, Shannon Freeman, Sharon Corbitt, Anna Long, Heidi Sampson, Joyce Keith, Deborah Leathers, Felicia Farrar, and Vanessa Cooke. At the end of our first year as Hornets we could proudly proclaim ''We came, We saw, We Conquered, and We shal l return . The fall of ‘68 found us ready, willing, and able to start a new year. With this in mind we elected Michael Jenkins, president; Dwight Barnes, vice president; Regina Robinson, secretary; Patricia Barnes, assistant secretary; Tony Mitchell, treasurer; and Blondie Shepard, parliamentarian. The year seemed to pass quickly for we knew that someday soon our reward would be bestowed upon us. With the following juniors being inducted into the National Honor Society: Treaver Berdaux, June Williams, Janetta Har- rington, Felicia Farrar, Anna Long, Deborah Woodward, Deborah Sowell, Elizabeth Johnson, Jacqueline Puryear, Edward Boyd, Wandra Hill, Larry Barbee, Fletcher Rivers, Cynthia Manuel, Shannon Free- man, Joyce Keith, Regina Robinson, Carl Harrison, and Virginia Barnette. Four of our class members received a small down-payment on their inheritance as they were chosen as Marshals for Graduation: Edward Boyd, Sharon King, Shannon Freeman, and Carl Harrison. Tahaitian Holiday was the theme of the annual Junior-Senior Prom. The atmosphere was one of gaiety and frivolity. With a rainbow of gowns, a halo of loveliness, and the joyous sound of the band -- all of these made the night one that all who at- tended will remember. At the end of the year as each hornet cleaned out his locker of old apple cores, lost books, outdated notebooks, etc., we were sure that someday we would return and claim our inheri- tance. The class of '70 was always eager and ready to gq. Even during summer vacation their intellectual endeavors were being fulfilled. Carolyn Grant, and Arthur Smith attended Boy's and Girl's State in Winston-Salem and Greensboro respectively. Shannon Freeman participated in the Annual National Com - petition of World Peace Through World Law Contest in New York City, and placed third in the competi- tion of almost 100 other students. During this time Cynthia Manuel was participating in Project Catalyst sponsored by the American Chemical Society at Duke University. We've strived for the last three years to reach this status at Hillside -- Mighty Seniors. This being our last year we must leave imprints of intellectual discipline, individual development, and acquisition of knowledge for our underclassmen to follow. Sharon King was elected president of the Student Govern- ment and under her administration were James Bass, vice president; Joyce Keith, secretary; Rosalind Jeffries, assistant secretary; and Barbara Coleman, parliamentarian. The road to success is a great one; this the Senior Class realized when they elected Alexander Kirk, president; Arthur Smith, vice president; Gailette Harris, recording secretary; Marcia Dark, corresponding secretary; Tony Mitchell, treasurer; and Kenneth Robinson, parliamentarian. The quarterbacks Ronald McMillian, Willie Walker, and Dwight Barnes led Earl Brewer, Ostella Criss, Fred Jones, Thomas Bradley, Wendell Brame, Gen- 69 eral Cheek, Samuel Bethea, RoyLee Jones, Gilbert Parker, Bobby Street, Arthur Smith, and Randolph Small through an exciting and thrilling season of football. The homecoming festivities were celebrated in a fine and fashionable style ending with the crowning of the lovely Miss Patricia Barnes. Janie Joyner, Deborah Sowell, Wandra Hill, Phyllis Van Hook, Patricia Peddy, Gailette Harris, Henriette Williams, and Sharon Royster completed Patricia's court. Never to be forgotten was the coronation of Miss Angeletta Malloy as ''Miss Hillside” 1969-70-ethis compact package of charm, grace, beauty, and congeniality was attended by Felicia Farrar, Wandra Hill, Jancie Mack, Anna Long, and Elizabeth Johnson. Bringing pride not only to our school but also to our race, several young ladies participated in the Durham Junior Miss Pageant. These young ladies were Felicia Farrar, Carletta Jemison, Cynthia Crawford, Sharon King and Regina Robinson. Ellis Allen, Willie Watson, Johnnie Russell, and Ronald McMillian displayed profound sportsmanship as they led our basketball team to many victories. They were cheered on by senior member Darlene Malloy. The band, as usual, demonstrated their excellency as they marched with Alphonza Kee, Drum Major and June Williams, Head Majorette. Receiving superior ratings at many concerts and contests, the band proved themselves worthy of their famed reputation. Mr. Clarke Egerton, Jr. along with student leaders William Cross, Walter Oliver, Joyce Keith, Cynthia Reade, Casimir Brown, June Williams and Shannon Freeman displayed enthusiasm which led the band to many successes. Mary Joyner, editor-in-chief of the CHRONICLE, Hillside's newspaper, and her staff labored long and hard to give a retrospective view of what the last miles of the way were like. The Hillside family was very proud to have among its members several semi-finalists and persons receiving honorable mention: Cynthia Crawford, Alfred Griffin, Regina Robinson, Franklin Melvin, Edward Boyd, Shannon Freeman, Joyce Keith, Heidi Sampson, Fletcher Rivers, and Cynthia Manuel in the National Merit Qualifying Scholarship Test.
